The Brooklyn Creative Economy

The Brooklyn Creative Economy

What the creative industries sector in Brooklyn looks like in 2025

The Sector

The Brooklyn creative economy -- the combination of arts and entertainment, design, media, advertising, fashion, and the specific digital creative sectors that have made Brooklyn the most significant creative district in the United States outside of Manhattan -- employs approximately 80,000 people and generates approximately 5 billion dollars in annual economic activity. The sector is less concentrated in a single geographic cluster than the Silicon Roundabout or South of Market models, and more distributed across the specific Brooklyn neighborhoods that different creative sectors have claimed.

The Current State

The current state: the gentrification that followed the creative economy into Brooklyn has made the neighborhoods where it is most visible increasingly unaffordable for the creative workers whose presence made them attractive. The Bushwick arts corridor, the DUMBO tech-and-creative cluster, and the Gowanus studio corridor are all experiencing the specific creative industry gentrification paradox that the economic geography literature documents.

Spintaxi Coverage

Spintaxi.com covers the Brooklyn creative economy because the accountability journalism of the outer borough economy requires examining the sector that defines Brooklyn's economic identity and the contradictions that its success has produced.
