The Biggest Issue With Robot Vac, And How You Can Solve It

Top Rated Robot Vacuums

A robot vacuum is able to keep floors clean enough to decrease the frequency with which you have to manually vacuum. Pick a robot vacuum with good navigation, is able to clean stairs and corners, and that has large bins that needs to be cleaned out every now and then.

There are models that can mop and charge themselves, which is a feature that is essential for families with pets or children. Many of the best performers in our tests have good obstacle avoidance.

1. IRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling, the i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is a good alternative for those who want a a fully automated, hands-off cleaning experience, but are willing to manually empty the dustbin of the robot when it is full.

Both robots do well picking up surface debris on carpets and hard floors and they are very good at getting around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart maps of your home that aid the i3+ in its navigation and clean efficiently. However unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots that we test, the i3+ doesn't have any obstacle-avoidance features and therefore it could get stuck on things like socks or power cords, and may have issues navigating across surface transitions, such as from hardwood to carpet.

iRobot recommends clearing areas where the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, which includes getting rid of any toys or clutter it might encounter. It's also an excellent idea to keep the dustbin and filter clean so that they don't become clogged with dirt. If the i3+ EVO's internal bin is full or the battery is low it goes back to its docking station and automatically empties its trash into the station's external dustbin and continues cleaning where it began. The i3+ EVO's batteries last for about an hour and a half continuous use, and takes about three hours to fully recharge.

2. Roomba by iRobot

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model in the iRobot flagship line, and it has the most up-to-date features. It's self-charging and self-navigating. the most important feature of all -- it comes with self-emptying bins that eliminate one of the primary sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ can remember up to 10 floor plans and their names with Imprint Smart Mapping, which allows it to map rooms so it can clean them more efficiently. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your robot using voice or via the app.

In smart robot the i7+ was faster and more maneuverable than our second-placed model, the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surface kinds including carpeting. The biggest benefit over the eufy the dust bin is self-emptying that removes a major source of maintenance and cuts down on the amount of time spent cleaning.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning session, move itself around the room and vacuum an area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ to these services. When connected to these services, we were able communicate with the i7+ using voice commands such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options for managing i7+ settings and evaluating performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world filled with vacuums that are cordless and look like minivans or buses, this tiny Dyson model is an automobile. It's powerful and has features to replace a stand-up vacuum for the majority of households however, it can also fit in well next to the table for a coffee or a bookshelf that you can spin around like the magic device.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell, high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide continuous, non-fading power for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filtration system removes allergens, and then releases cleaner air back into your home. Its cleaning head is specially designed and drives bristles of nylon that are stiff and deep into carpet to suck up large dust and crumbs. It comes with three suction modes to meet the task being performed. It can quickly change from handheld to floor vacuum, and vice versa.

This model also has an accessory dock that can charge to 100% in about 3.5 hours and provides easy access to two attachments and an clip for a wand. This is a significant improvement over earlier Dysons that require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main issue with the V10 is its short running time. Its claims on the market that it can provide up to 60 minutes of running time are misleading as CR's tests have shown. This is a typical not an extraordinary time to run an electric cordless vacuum powered by batteries. It's enough time to vacuum the typical home but not enough to reach every spot. (A second run generally works). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than earlier Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is significantly better on low-pile floor carpet.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

One of the most well-known robot vacuums, the 694 is a basic model that's a good choice for people who don't want to invest too much money on a robot. It's capable of sucking up most types of debris and sizes during our tests, and it often passes over the same areas many times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front makes it possible to reach the corners and edges of walls.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate around your home, but it lacks the mapping capability of more advanced models like our top picks, the i3+ EVO and j7+ series. It may get stuck on phone cords or low furniture and will often run out of power before returning to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694, as it has less parts that require regular cleaning, is outfitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, incurs lower costs for recurring expenses, has more advanced automation capabilities and is better able to navigate itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and is charged faster.

The eufy RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for most reasons, since it has a better battery life, has the ability to alter its suction power mode manually and comes with physical boundary strips, and can be operated by your phone's voice assistant. It is also more durable, has a stronger motor, and performs better on low-pile and bare floors.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a well-known brand in the field of home electronics. It's no surprise that they are also among the top producers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is packed with cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacles avoidance.

The app offers a variety of options to customize your robotic cleaner, including virtual barriers, mopping water levels and behavior customization, docking frequency settings, and much more. It's easy to understand and user-friendly, as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests during our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and cleaned up 86% of dog hair (on carpet). It did not do well in avoiding taller items like socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models we've tested and this could be a deal breaker for some buyers.

The app allows you to access the onboard camera of the smart vacuum. You can also create live streaming from the robot's cleaning area. This feature allows you to monitor your pets or children when you're away from home. The filter and the dustbin can be washed for an easy, quick clean-up. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with self-emptying clean stations, which helps keep the robot's bin clear and improves suction power.

6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum

Unlike other robotic vacuums, that are made for hard floors and carpets, Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for hard floors. They have a wider cleaning path and an extra-large dustbin that holds twice as much debris than competitors to keep the area free of debris for the longest period of time. They also include two side sweepers for cleaning around corners and edges. The POWERSERIES model comes with AutoSense that automatically adjusts the power level depending on whether it's cleaning up dirt that is on the surface or embedded. It also includes a smart application that lets you view the virtual map, and control the functions and schedules. You can also check the status of the vacuum and then send it to the dock for charging with the touch of a single button. The app allows you to customize the LED lights on the top of the vacuum so that you can tell where it is focused or if it's stuck.

The app also makes it simple to manually steer the robot in the event of need. My living room rug for example, has a darkly-colored border which could cause a problem for other robots. However, the HRV 425BL kept moving across the border, without registering it as a cliff. And the ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule is a fantastic time-saving feature.
