The Bell Chimes for Gold has a storied development history. Originally developer OTUSUN Club brought their otome game where you romance middle aged men to Indiegogo in 2016. Although they asked for less than $20,000 in funding, the audience just failed to find the title in time. As a result, they then took to Patreon to crowdfund its English release. Here, too, there was not tremendous turnout — but the team never lost hope. Finally, Sekai Project came in and even set their title as the very first release of their new otome sub-brand Maiden Voyage. After all that work, English-speaking gamers can finally try out The Bell Chimes for Gold for themselves. Was it all worth it? That depends on what exactly you’re looking for in your otome visual novels.
The storyline kicks off in a unique fashion. We meet Maria, a herbalist who has been dreaming of one day marrying her Master. Master Richard did previously shower praise on his disciple, but not because he actually had interest in marrying Maria. Upon revealing he’s marrying Maria’s best friend, he leaves her with the parting words that she could easily make enough money to buy any man she wants. Instead of reappraising her unhealthy obsession with Richard, she decides to follow his suggestion. She’s going to make mad money and flaunt it until men fall head over heels in love with her. It just so happens that there are five eligible bachelors in the town who all have serious money issues. Whether it’s because they spend their money frivolously, or are too kind and giving for their own good, all of them could benefit from a wealthy benefactor who absolves all their debts.
It may sound like an incredibly shallow concept, and it is, since being with someone for their money is hardly looked upon as romantic. However, The Bell Chimes for Gold manages to tell each of its storylines so they never come across as one person using the other. You get glimpses of the story that reveal the men don’t feel good about someone else taking care of their debts for them. Still, once freed of these monetary shackles, they start to grow as people and open themselves up to new experiences. It’s also important to note that Maria herself does easily make tons of gold – and makes that money partially due to each of the bachelors. As a herbalist, her income comes from synthesizing potions. She can only get the ingredients for these potions by exploring dangerous territories. Since she’s not a warrior herself, she hires mercenaries to fight any monsters in the way.

Most of one’s gameplay time comes in as players harvest for ingredients. In this RPG mode, players progress one step at a time down a linear, 100 step long dungeon. Moving forward may cause players to run into an enemy, find ingredients for synthesis, find status boosting items, traps or absolutely nothing. The end of any map is where the boss resides. Beat the boss in order to collect an extra special item which can in turn be used to boost your preferred bodyguard’s stats. Grinding is a bit tough, though, because in addition to health players must also attend to Maria’s stamina. She may not be fighting but she can only take so many steps in a day – just 25 to start. There are ways to temporarily increase her stamina as well as “fly” past multiple steps at a time. It doesn’t take long to get accustomed to the system and run through dungeons on auto pilot.
Unfortunately, The Bell Chimes for Gold does its best to make progression far more annoying than it should be. One simple but strange issue comes in the form of the game simply not appearing to register every button press the player makes. Stepping forward requires clicking a button – and sometimes clicking the button does not make you move forward. The same is true of other buttons in the RPG mode. It could be an issue of lag or loading the next element. The options menu suggests turning off auto save can resolve lag problems, but it did not change this annoyance in the least. In another weird move, certain items on the field cannot be picked up automatically. All herbalist-related elements can be set to auto pick up but not special items. Fail to click on them specifically because you’re mindlessly clicking the step button and you’ll miss a free health boost, for example.

Then there’s the fact that playing The Bell Chimes for Gold via Steam means that you’re getting an abbreviated version of the game. Sure, the gameplay itself is still much the same, but there’s a lot of story content and CG scenes that will be missed. For example, in the Steam version, incrementally paying off any man’s debt eventually ends in a lovely, chaste romance that feels a bit too quick. The version available from Denpasoft, by virtue of allowing 18+ content, is both more sexual and extends character interactions to flesh out relationships better. There also does not appear to be a patch available as a free or paid download to convert the Steam release. Anyone who expects to get the full experience should clearly turn to Denpasoft for their order.
Certainly there’s still something to like about the game beyond its imperfect RPG implementation. Most of the eligible bachelors are grizzled and hunky for those into older men. It would have been easy for all of them to have the same personality, but each stands out as quite different from one another personality-wise as much as they differ visually. The Japanese voice acting is also pretty enjoyable. Just don’t expect the same bishonen-style voices that you may be used to hearing in games with far younger protagonists. Despite the clear age difference between Maria and her love interests, the storyline is written in such a way that this usually doesn’t come across as strange. It works well and the translation deserves credit for keeping the storyline palpable for audiences.
In Japan, The Bell Chimes for Gold launched on both PC and mobile devices while here it’s only available on PC. The mobile-focused development is clear by the game’s tall, smartphone resolution as well as the large menu buttons. Although completely playable on PC, this is absolutely a game that would be more welcome on a smartphone. Dungeons are short and the gameplay loop of adventuring, synthesizing and paying off debts can be done in multiple mini sessions or in one two to three hour playthrough. On PC, it’s not nearly as convenient to quickly fire the game up to grind and pay down one debt. It’s also fairly annoying that on PC there are not many hotkeys to speed up progression. Instead, hitting those large buttons is absolutely required.
The Bell Chimes for Gold starts out as charming and fun to play. It’s once you spend more time with it that the problems with regard to unregistered button presses and certain items not being picked up automatically move from small annoyance to grating on the entire gameplay session. It also doesn’t help that the majority of the experience (exploring dungeons for items) is entirely repetitive. If the game were playable on mobile in English, this could be forgiven due to players having an easier time simply playing in tiny bursts. Watching romances unfold is enjoyable, but even that’s restricted for the Steam version in a way that harms each bachelor’s path. The Bell Chimes for Gold is cute but requires fine tuning before it can be recommended to otome fans.

I just realized that we have no "Guide" flair.
I've just finished The Bell Chimes for Gold and decided to write a mini/partial guide while it's still fresh for me and I'm still motivated. There isn't too much info out there, so I hope this helps.
There are five guys to romance and getting them is very straightforward. First, you need to encounter them (using "Chat") for the first time in their designated areas.
Samuel: Tavern (day) William: Guild (day) Ben: Tavern (night) Brian: Guild (night) Walter: Alley (night)
After the first encounter, you'll be able to hire them as your bodyguard and you'll also be able to pay their debt.
Romance progresses solely through paying your LI's debt , and as long as you have the cash, there's no failure. Each character has seven events after the first encounter, and it takes $468,500 to get all seven and finish a route. This may seem like a lot in the beginning, but you'll earn it in no time flat.
You can visit and chat with your LI in their area after each event for a new, short interaction.
The RPG element is very simple and easy. You just need some grinding. It may take a little getting used to if you are new to RPGs in general, but there's no need to worry. You'll figure it out quickly... and there's not much of a way to lose.
Before you begin, you should read all the Help Menu options. They are short and contain valuable tutorial information.
By the way, the Help Menu is the third option (looks like an ID card) in your top row option menu on the game screen.
Also, when hiring a bodyguard, read up on their stats and what bonuses they give .
Running away from a monster will take 1 energy, but you will always succeed in running away. (Running away is not an option when fighting a boss.)
You lose your materials if you die, but you'll still get the monster money. You won't lose anything running out of stamina.
You can only have one buff and one debuff at a time. Don't make the same mistake as me and try to use a Power Boost and an Invincibility Potion at the same time.
You start out with 30 stamina, which is not really enough to reach a boss without a lot of luck and/or stamina potions. Here's my recommendation for the early game: Focus on making stamina potions, power up Ben a little, and run the Castle Ruins area with him all the way to the boss multiple times. Beating the boss there will give you Lament of the Dead, which is the material you use for the "Something Else" option in the alley. This will give you 5 extra stamina each time. This is a great option because it applies to you, the protag, and is therefore not limited to just the one bodyguard you upgrade each time.
Since your bodyguard levels up based on your payment after each dungeon stint, pay them the big tip ($800) each time for faster leveling.
Turn on auto collect (the basket icon when you're in a dungeon). This way you don't have to manually collect the materials and just move forward. You will still have to manually interact with the event items. (Event items are the coins, traps, treasure boxes, and free stamina/HP/energy.)
I recommend not selling too many potions outside of Love Potion and Aphrodisiac (which are useless to you). You earn plenty of money through coin events and beating monsters. It's more worth it to use the potions yourself. As long as you have the potions, you can basically win every battle. You may think at some point that your bodyguard is pretty leveled up and you don't need them anymore, but you may find yourself missing them in this next part--
There is a hidden dungeon called the Outerlands . To unlock the Outerlands, you'll need to defeat a legendary boss. You only have a chance to encounter one on Horde days. It'll replace the regular boss. As far as I know, they also only appear in the Prairie. (Let me know if you encounter one elsewhere.)
Once you defeat this boss, the Outerlands will be available to you. There are no materials to collect in the Outerlands, but take 99 steps in and you'll be fighting the true legendary monster, which has 600 HP and healing powers. If you can defeat this boss, you get $500,000 and a CG and a short (and I mean short) scene with the LI you used in battle.
Here's how I'd rate the LI's scenes from most to least consensual. Coincidentally, it's also how I'd rate their romances from most to least sweet.
William > Samuel > Ben > Brian > Walter
Some fetishes involved/warnings if you don't want to be caught off guard (alternatively, if you want to have something to look forward to):
Brian: foot fetish, analingus, anal sex
Walter: bondage, watersports (urethra play and piss drinking), slime sex, attempted rape (not by LI)
This game autosaves unless you turn the option off. There's not really a need for multiple saves if you want to play normally. You can romance multiple LIs at once with no consequences. After you complete a route, you can just continue to play while keeping your inventory, money, and stats.
If you do decide to start a new game, save your old one to another slot first (not slot 1)! Otherwise the game will automatically write over your old file!
You are right we do need a guide or general FYI flair!! This is a very good guide and covered every thing I can think of...except if you want to be a little cheesy muhahaha.
I suggest to save story scenes until after you have almost that $450,000+ money. At first it will take you a while to get and you will get impatient and end up playing the available storys beforehand. But once you get the hang of the grinding and the LI and MC are high enough leveled, it will be way easier and then more satisfying to play most of the short stories without stopping.
Along side that, after you complete 1 or 2 routes do not feel the need to "make your dungeon bonds stronger with your current LI". The game doesn't care who you made the money with so you are wasting time by trying to level up all the LIs. Now if you are one who needs to have a tight connected story, at least finish the previous LI's route with a decent amount money since goods and money do roll over.
I rarely used any potions because I could not be bothered to read about them lol...and I wanted the money. So if you are going to be selling potions as part of your money making, make sure you only sell them when they in high demand (duh). Do not make the potions until they are in need (there is no item limited so feel free to be a hoader) because some potions use the same ingredients if memory serves me correct.
The most useful dungeon partners I found (based off memory) where Sam, especial in the beginning, for his extra steps ability and Ben since both traps and chest do not cost with him.
I actually preferred spacing the events out with at least one dungeon run. Makes it seem like more time has passed and the progression is more natural.
Doing your way does have an advantage, though. You can multitask while you grind the dungeons... listen to a podcast or watch a video or something.
For me, Sam was useful for very early game. Then it was William, Brian, and Ben for their respective areas. Walter is useless.
Thank you for the guide! The RPG was honestly a bit frustrating after a while lol. I love me some good gameplay elements in my otome game, but it felt kind of tedious to do after completing a single route. But for a doujin game, I really enjoyed the crafting and dungeon crawling elements it had! I just wish it had more events with the respective love interests scattered in the game here and there.
I'm also with the other user who suggested saving up money before going for the events. In my case, I think I raised up to 600k+ and even then it felt like it wasn't enough to continue the events in succession. Sam and Ben are defo useful in dungeons early game but in my case I felt like I couldn't get very far with Ben because he was kinda frail lol. Sam is 100% tak material iirc and takes a lot of good hits. Iirc, William is especially good when you level him up to the point that he c
