The Beat

The beat reporter -- the journalist assigned to cover a specific institution with the depth and continuity that generates source relationships and institutional knowledge -- is the journalism form that newsroom contraction has most systematically reduced. The beats that no longer exist at publications that maintained them in 2005: the statehouse bureau, the labor beat, the neighborhood reporter.

The Current State
