After her ex-husband Carlos shoots Celeste three times in the gut, it's time to play dirty. In the fight for her godson, Rob, she hires three outlawed and redneck brothers to bring him back to her. But nothing can be that simple in the South. What begins as a small rescue mission rises to a southern battle royale. This odd team must shoot their way through gorgeous female assassins, Native American hunters, Federal agents, and a whole lot of metal coming after them, while protecting Celeste's innocent child.
I don't think anyone will ever nominate "Baytown Outlaws" for any awards, but it certainly works well within the parameters the director and screenwriter lay out for it. Think "Road Warrior" meets Elmore Leonard run through a Lynyrd Skynyrd "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" cast of characters.Lots of good, irresponsible fun.<br/><br/>The poster (and box cover) don't really play fair with the viewer - Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria are in this, all right, but Longoria gets about 10 minutes total on screen and Thornton is basically a talking head disconnected from the action. The burden of carrying the film goes to 3 relatively unknown actors who bring their best stuff to these roles and make the film worth watching. I have no idea what their backgrounds really are, but I never doubted their on screen roles for a second.<br/><br/>There's even a little bit of depth and character growth here, as the screenplay manages to import character history and family dynamics and takes time to reveal a sympathetic, likable side to these killers for hire as they shoot increasingly bizarre and dangerous bands of mercenaries and killers in their respective faces. Our "heroes" try to keep a helpless, wheelchair bound young man safe in the midst of some very impressive mayhem and take a bit of a shine to him, and in the context of the movie this actually works.<br/><br/>The action is convincingly and energetically depicted - it's movie land, where a character can take a huge knife to the back and be back in action two scenes later, but it's huge amounts of fun.<br/><br/>Apparently, this film had a very limited release, or it might have made a bigger splash. Too bad - I'd be interested in any else the directors and these actors would be involved in.<br/><br/>This actually "felt" more epic than a science fiction extravaganza like "Cowboys and Aliens", even if the story wasn't as novel and involving, so it gets the same score, a "7". If the IMDb ratings allowed it, I'd make it 7.5.
This just happened to come on Showtime while I was doing something around the house - the beginning caught my attention...and then I was sucked in. Agreed, EL and BBT have limited roles ...and really, that's fine. Because its the Oodie brothers that steal the show. Literally. <br/><br/>They're on a mission (cash incentive of course) to retrieve EL's godson from her crazy, criminal murderous ex-hubby (BBT). What ensues is entertaining, funny and heart- warming with a little bit of Speak n Spell thrown in. You'll find yourself rooting for the Oodie brothers. <br/><br/>SO entertaining..I loved it. And it's got a pretty good soundtrack to boot!<br/><br/>Definitely worth the watch!
The resulting mayhem and slaughter is vile and disgusting.
