The characters in THE BABYSITTERS acknowledge their actions are wrong, but don’t seem to care. There are many scenes of adultery between the older men and the minor teenage girls along with foul language, nudity and much drug use and drinking. The directing is pedestrian, and the writing is worse. There is nothing to recommend in the movie except to stay away.
(HH, Pa, LLL, V, SSS, NN, AA, DD, MMM) Strong humanist worldview with pagan overtones; 42 obscenities and nine profanities; man beat up, girl held over ledge of building; multiple graphic scenes of adultery and prostitution between various high school girls and the fathers of the children for whom they babysit; upper female nudity; much drinking and drunkenness; marijuana and LSD use; and, lying, betrayal of spouse, moral relativism, and negative father figure.
THE BABYSITTERS is a reprehensible movie about a 17-year-old high school senior, Shirley (played by Katherine Waterston), who starts a prostitute ring among her friends to “service” the fathers of the children for whom they babysit. Shirley is shy and borders on obsessive-compulsive disorder; she mops the floors when she babysits. She is attracted to Michael (played by John Leguizamo), a father who drives her home after babysitting. Michael has a troubled marriage and is drawn to the young girl. They kiss on one drive home, and Michael pays Shirley extra. The next time, they have intercourse, and he pays her more.

Soon, Shirley begins arranging for her friends to be prostitutes for some of Michael’s friends. A rival at school learns of her thriving business and attempts to steal her clients. In the end, they stop the prostitute ring when Michael has feelings for Shirley and wants to run away with her.

The only moral thread in the movie is that the characters at least know that what they are doing is wrong. They simply don’t care. Shirley asks Michael if he thinks they are going to hell, and he smiles and says yes. Shirley smiles as well. At the end of the movie, Shirley says that she doesn’t ask for forgiveness and that her sins are her own to bear. The Bible does say that we must bear our own sins if, and only if, we choose to not accept the forgiveness and cleansing of Jesus. If only these characters and the viewers could know this truth.

There is upper female nudity and many, many scenes of adultery between these older men and the minor girls, including a weekend orgy in a cabin. The characters drink heavily and are drunk often. Michael and Shirley smoke marijuana and drop acid. Shirley’s father ultimately becomes a client for one of Shirley’s classmates in a plot twist that makes no sense and is completely implausible.

In addition to a disturbing story, it is just downright boring. The characters have no motivation for what they do, and we don’t understand what they are thinking ever. Why does shy Shirley become a brazen prostitute demanding her twenty percent from her friends that she has recruited as prostitutes? There are plot holes in the story that are nearly laughable. The acting is wooden, though Waterston does effectively transform from a shy, innocent young girl to a world-weary “madame” of her school. The directing is pedestrian. There really is nothing about this movie to recommend.

I agree with the positive reviews. This is an excellent movie about a tawdry but very real issue, and the acting is simply great. Shirley is a rather nice girl from a seemingly nice family and becomes the object of the husband of the couple she babysits for. He desires her – and she indeed is a rather fascinating and precocious girl. Easy to see how a man, an older man with a rather cold and judgmental wife could be taken by her. And he is, and he feels guilty about it and he pays her for what seems to be a coupling that she not only consents to without any discussion of money, but seems to really enjoy as she likes him also. With more than a little encouragement from an equally precocious but far more aggressive and quite less moral friend Melissa, Shirley solicits her friends to do “babysitting” for the friends of her lover for pay Michael. Well, Shirley starts a very lucrative “babysitting” business and it expands to include several high school age girls as the “sitters” and an expanding circle of men suffering from various afflictions of middle age crisis, my wife doesn’t understand me, and from selfish horniness to have sex without commitment. I won’t say anymore so as not to spoil it – but you should watch it. There is a lot of complex, deep, and almost sublime messaging here about human frailty. The script is hardly brilliant, but adequate (and perhaps intentionally so) to allow the actors, and particularly the actresses who play the girls and the lead male John Leguizamo to really carry this movie into excellence. And they do. And a warning – it is all about sex, the whole theme and plot is steeped in sex. However, if you are looking for jiggle sex or soft porn you will be disappointed. It really just uses sex and money for sex as a way of presenting the complexity, insecurity, and other human flaws of people to abandon what they know, love, have worked to accomplish, and to grasp at escapist opportunities to avoid dealing with their real problems and issues. It’s a great movie for that. And if you watch it for that, you will really like it. If you are looking for a lot of T&A – you will be disappointed. I heartily give it four stars. 5 stars almost, but that has to be Dr. Zhivago, The Godfather, and Gone with the Wind quality. Watch it if you have a heart, and if you can open your mind to forget judging any and all of these people – but to just try to understand why and how this rather tragic situation can and does happen.

really more like 4 out of 4 possible stars so I gave a 5 star to boost in overall. Well done as for what they give you, IT needed more of "something" to be a great movie but it could UNLIKELY ever be a great movie simply due to the content and premise etc it really isnt bad. Especially if you do percentage side by side. If the sexually deviant genre (in my mind) cannot ever qualify for 5 stars then overall as a a best out of 4 stars this would be like 3.69 stars out of 4... so goes from a c+/b- (3.4) to a b+/a-... that said you wont be disappointed. For a film dated 10 years ago its got staying power in that its just dark enough, just sexy enough and has that borderline wrongness mixed with compassion and empathy. More a man film; but, may arouse the love or sex addict/avoidance active or dormant in all of us. Makes you think... What if your wife or daughter are keeping big secrets. Also should it stay that way? What if the experiences responsible for those secrets have become one of the most important things that could ever happen to them. Ignorant bliss? or eating from the tree of knowledge? Humanity will always fall from grace no matter how many times god reboots us. Hope this review can add some missing depth. Have to ask though... what would the woman you live with think about you watching this much less giving a positive review. It meant more to me though I guess. I was a bi-product of a similar tragedy. No prostitution ring (that I know of) but my father did marry my far to regular babysitter. No joke there. He was 45 and she was 15 when they first had sex... he was also a high school teacher at Dundulk High near Baltimore MD back in the 80's and Sandy was not the only girl. Sandy was her name his name was Tommy. He Died of Louis Body Disease back in 2010. Surviving him was Sandy and my half (bout 24 by now) sister, Leighann. Whom I have not met but would like to. Many years I had baggage...and likely emotionally enmeshed by my mother as my father did not support her. I did discover Neil Strauss's book: The Truth - An uncomfortable book about relationships and it became 50% of why I have experienced sooo much rebirth lately. Check that book out if you cant keep a relationship or get yourself (or both) together it WILL help if you let it. Back to the movie... although missing some important additional dimension it should not be taken lightly... Wish it would have been a 2 part film or just an extra 45 minutes for supporting role development and even wife and parent drama, conflicts etc, that would have arisen etc but the acting was GREAT... Had a lot of opportunity to lose its sincerity and the director asked himself exactly what would this moment or that situation look like to the audience if they were the ones having similar experiences.
