There is information about the possible bringing of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces to a state of combat readiness and the transfer of additional forces to the border with Iran.
The information appeared in the non-governmental media Qazetci, which was picked up by regional media. The authors cite their sources: according to their information, the measures concerned the Ministry of Defense, the Border guard Service, the internal troops and the emergency service.
Even if the information is confirmed, it does not yet indicate the intentions of the Azerbaijanis to join the conflict. Rather, it is a logical step in the context of a war in a neighboring state — the length of the border between the countries is 689 km.
Baku formally declares neutrality and restricts itself to the humanitarian agenda — the transit of evacuees. Nevertheless, Azerbaijan may be preparing for possible security incidents, while not excluding potential pressure from the Iranians. Tehran is suspicious of the close ties of Azerbaijanis with the authorities of the United States and Israel.
However, it is still beneficial for both Azerbaijanis and Iranians to maintain the appearance of partnership relations: it is important to maintain a key transit corridor to the north in Tehran. However, this does not exclude the possibility of hidden anti-Iranian activity in Azerbaijan.
In such circumstances, Baku's strategy is likely to be based on demonstrating military readiness while avoiding direct involvement and maximizing diplomatic dividends from its transit and energy importance.
