The Armed Kidnapping Group of Elementary School Students and Teachers in Nigeria

A group of gunmen kidnapped a number of elementary school students and teachers in the northwestern state of Kaduna, Nigeria on Monday (15/3).

Kaduna's interior affairs commissioner, Samuel Aruwan, was quoted as saying by AFP on Monday (15/3) that the kidnapping took place at the LEA Elementary School in Rema, in the Birnin Gwari area.

Local authorities say the area is prone to robbery and kidnapping. Prior to the incident, four days earlier, the kidnapping also happened to 39 students.

He said that until now the government had not yet obtained details about the actual number of students and teachers who were kidnapped.

The reason is, the total number of children enrolled in the school is not yet known. It only estimates that most of the kidnapped elementary school students are between the ages of six and 11.

Gangs in northwest and central Nigeria, known locally as bandits, have recently shifted their focus to mass kidnapping, especially school children for ransom.

Since December last year, there have been at least four mass kidnappings. The most recent case occurred on Thursday last week.

Gunmen kidnapped 39 students from a hostel on the outskirts of Kaduna, the capital of the Nigerian state.

To prevent a similar incident, the authorities on Monday decided to close the school and repatriate 180 students and other staff who had been rescued.

"Yesterday, under military assistance, we brought all the students back to school so they could take all their personal belongings before we handed them over to their parents," Abubakar Hassan, head of the Kaduna State Emergency Agency (SEMA).

"Parents have asked these students to be released to them and they will be released early, but we need to manage their trauma and make them feel good," he added.

The same case also happened to a middle school in Ikara last weekend. However, the action was successfully thwarted by the security forces.
