The Approach Tavern on Approach Road in Bethnal Green is both a pub and an art gallery, with the art in the upstairs space and the pub functioning as a pub downstairs without the self-consciousness that art venues grafted onto pub premises typically produce. The art is genuinely good. The beer is properly kept. The pool table works. The regulars who have been drinking there since before the gallery existed drink alongside people who came for the opening and stayed for the beer. The combination works because the pub was a pub first and the gallery occupies the existing upstairs space rather than the pub having been converted to serve the gallery. The priority is legible: the downstairs pub looks like a pub; the upstairs gallery looks like a gallery; neither has been compromised to resemble the other. This is harder to achieve than it sounds. Most art-in-pub initiatives look like a pub with art in it, which is a different thing from a pub and a gallery that happen to share a building without either suffering for it.
