Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary
Bentley's custom coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed a unique keycase to mark the centennial of the company. Made from Dark Stained Burr Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it comes with a flying 'B' paperweight, a set of keys and a brochure that features never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre images.

Design

Function
The Bentley Mulsanne key features an opening button for the trunk and a second button that turns on the car. The key also includes a switch to turn on the parking brake. There is a knob that can fold and unfold the mirrors when parked in tight areas. This feature can help you get into and out of your vehicle more quickly.
Each key takes two days to make. It is cut by hand, shaped, sewn, sealed and polished to create the highest-quality finish. It is light and compact and fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its style is similar to the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key, but it feels much heavier and has a premium feel.
Secure-A-Key is also included to help prevent keyless entry theft. This device is put inside the remote-control key fob and disables it after a few minutes of inactivity, preventing thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices which can unlock and start the vehicle.

Bentley's bespoke division, Mulliner, allows customers to create their own vehicle. Each time a selection is made, the pattern that emerges shows the model, color and style preferences for the bespoke Bentley.
The resulting configuration is loaded onto individual R.F.I.D.-enabled keys, which are presented to the guests in a hand-crafted key case. Keys can be outfitted with Bentley Muliner Personalised welcome lamps that illuminate the way of the entrance door, and display the owner's name or logo as they approach the car.
Bentley says it takes roughly 500 man-hours to craft and assemble the average Mulsanne. A key to that time-consuming effort is a deliberate decision to embrace the latest technology. Instead of using a machine to space the perfectly matched leather seats workers at the Crewe factory do it by hand. Drivers are required to park their vehicles manually, rather than relying on sensors built into the vehicle to guide them into perpendicular and paralell spots.
At the event, Bentley presented its Mulliner personalization capabilities with one particular example that was the Mulsanne W.O. Edition, which pays homage to the man who founded the company, William Osler Bentley. The limited-edition cars have 100 of them. an exclusive key that shows a slice of the 1930 8 Liter's crankshaft.
