The session at the Hackney Archives this week produced a find I did not anticipate: in a box of local civic papers from the 1890s, a printed programme for a public meeting convened in March 1893 to discuss a petition to Parliament regarding working hours in the match industry, with a handwritten annotation in the margin of one page that appears to be notes made during the meeting by someone who was present. The annotation is not identified. The handwriting is consistent throughout the programme's annotations, suggesting it is one person's notes from one meeting. What the annotations contain: disagreements with the speaker's claims about the match manufacturers' profitability (one annotation reads simply "no"), shorthand notations I cannot fully decode, and at the bottom of the last page, in a different hand and possibly added later, two words that appear to be a name.
