Prada has always employed nylon as its main material. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line garnered it worldwide acclaim, while Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready diffusion line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The first video is a collaboration between Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.
The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's move to re-Nylon is the largest reduction in virgin nylon yet. It will save 70,000 barrels of crude oil per year. Additionally, the change will reduce the company's carbon footprint by an estimated 57,000 tons. It's the latest sustainability effort from the label, which just went fur-free in its clothes and accessories, a decision that was applauded by both animal rights activists and environmentalists alike.
