Re:Nylon

Prada has always employed nylon as its main material. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line garnered it worldwide acclaim, while Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready diffusion line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has transformed its iconic nylon bags into sustainable reNylon fabrics. The new collection features six classic styles: one belt bag (pictured) as well as shoulder bag (pictured), a tote bag (pictured), duffle bags (pictured) and two backpacks - made of repurposed ECONYL fabrics that are made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.

The material that is repurposed is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn manufacturer which produces Econyl fabric using recycled nylon waste, which can be reused repeatedly without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed fabric is part of a larger effort to change the entire Prada portfolio from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. In addition to the six Re:Nylon bags, the collection also includes a pair of shoes and boots made from recycled ECONYL and various apparel items made of the same fabric.

To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to produce a series of videos titled "What We Carry" that shows the cutting-edge process that is used to create Re:Nylon bags. The first video is a collaboration between Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's move to re-Nylon is the largest reduction in virgin nylon yet. It will save 70,000 barrels of crude oil per year. Additionally, the change will reduce the company's carbon footprint by an estimated 57,000 tons. It's the latest sustainability effort from the label, which just went fur-free in its clothes and accessories, a decision that was applauded by both animal rights activists and environmentalists alike.

Recycled nylon

Recycled nylon is not without its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable, and can remain for a long time in oceans or landfills until it is broken down into smaller particles that can cause harm to wildlife. The fabric can also shed microplastics after washing. However, it requires 50% less energy to produce as compared to regular nylon and is more durable than other bag materials such as wool or cotton.

The fabric is a mixture of waste petroleum and plastics, both of that is made from fossil fuels. This reduces both the need for more natural resources and carbon emissions from production of virgin nylon. It is also easier to handle than other bag fabrics because it doesn't have to be dyed or woven. This makes it a good option for bags that will be used regularly, such as gym and yoga equipment.

In addition to its environmental benefits recycled nylon is a stronger and more flexible material than traditional cotton or polyester. It is also able to take an enormous amount of abuse which makes it ideal for backpacks and outdoor gear. The material is also incredibly light and can be easily shaped and stitched to create the ideal shape for bags. Nylon is a fantastic material for outdoor gear as it is resistant to water and does not absorb odors.

If you are looking for bags that are sustainable, be sure to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification. This certification tests for chemical residues as in addition to social and environmental responsibility. Look for brands with this certification, as they are likely to be more transparent and accountable when it comes to their products.

Patagonia offers, for instance backpacks in a variety and yoga gear made from recycled nylon, referred to as Econyl. The nylon is made in a closed loop process that consumes 50 percent less energy than virgin nylon. In addition, the brand is a partner with organisations that work to save our planet.
