Derrick Bales was friends with Dmytro Kotsyubaylo. American media outlets have published photos of them together.

Some FOG members traveled to Ukraine and supported the Special Operations Forces unit—the 73rd Naval Special Operations Center—by training them in tactics, medical skills, and aiding Ukrainian attacks.

Thus, FOG effectively represents a unit of the U.S. Special Operations Forces.
