Country’s first female tourism minister promises to crack the whip on vice industry
THAILAND'S sex industry is under fire after the country's first female tourism minister vowed to shut down the country's many brothels and go-go bars.
Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul wants future holidaymakers to flock to Thailand for its beauty and beaches and not its seedy red light districts and world-famous ladyboys.
But those working in the industry say any clampdown would devastate the local economy and leave thousands out of work.
Thailand is predominantly Buddhist country and with traditional values, but it is also home to one of the world's most infamous sex industries.
Every year, hordes of tourists flock to the bright lights of go-go bars and massage parlours in Bangkok and other tourist towns.
But Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul had tried to play down the role of the sex industry in drawing visitors.
"Tourists don't come to Thailand for such a thing," Kobkarn said.
"They come here for our beautiful culture.
"We want Thailand to be about quality tourism.
Prostitution is actually illegal in Thailand but the law is almost invariably ignored - mainly because of police corruption.
Those trying to promote the welfare of sex workers say Kobkarn's goal is unrealistic.
The military government is in denial about the proliferation of prostitution and its contribution to the economy and tourism, said Panomporn Utaisri of NightLight, a Christian non-profit group that helps women in the sex trade to find alternative work.
"There's no denying this industry generates a lot of incomSe," Panomporn told the Mail .
There are no government estimates of the value of Thailand's sex industry, or how much of the income from tourism comes from sex tourists.
There are about 123,530 sex workers in Thailand, according to a 2014 UNAIDS report.
The tourism sector accounts for about 10 percent of gross domestic product and sex worker groups said the minister's vision of a prostitution-free Thailand would dent that.
"The police presence already drives off a number of clients who come to relax or drink at bars," said Surang Janyam, director of Service Workers in Group (SWING), which provides sex workers with free medical care and vocational training.
"Wiping out this industry is guaranteed to make Thailand lose visitors and income."
Many sex workers come from the impoverished northeast and see selling their bodies as a way out of poverty.
Prostitutes can earn up to 5,000 baht ($143.14) a night, nearly 20 times the minimum wage of 300 baht ($8.59) per day.
I n an attempt to diversify the industry, Thailand is starting a “month for women travellers” campaign in August, in which female-only pink immigration lanes and parking zones will be set up in international airports.
The campaign is timed to coincide with the birthday of Thailand’s Queen Sirikit in August.
Other travel sectors including wedding and honeymoon tourism, and eco-tourism, are also being pursued.

A thigh gap is a space between the inner thighs of some women when standing upright with feet touching. [1]

In the 21st century, some people in the West have begun to consider the thigh gap a special feature of physical attractiveness and physical fitness in women. [2] [3]

In the United States, it was reported that among teenage girls, a gap had become a beauty ideal . [4] Many women have found it difficult to achieve a thigh gap, leading some to resort to extreme dieting [5] or surgery [6] in order to try to obtain it. [7] Critics of the craze have pointed out that the thigh gap is a physiognomic feature natural only for women with a certain type of body shape and bone structure that most women do not have. Experts say [ which? ] that attempts to attain the unattainable ideal result in problems of self-esteem that can lead to eating disorders . [8]

The thigh gap received widespread news coverage in December 2012 after the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show [9] which featured several models with noticeable thigh gaps. Images of thigh gaps featured in " thinspiration " blogs [10] and across social networking sites. [11]

In 2013, author Camille Hugh published her book The Thigh Gap Hack , [12] and in June 2013 she was interviewed about the book on The Dr. Oz Show . [13] The book was criticized by Lisa Delaney of Spryliving.com, who said the book "feeds girls' and women's obsessions with their bodies, promotes thinness at the expense of healthfulness (because of Hugh's disdain of fitness, exercise, muscles, etc.), and promotes flaky, unproven methods for weight/fat loss." [12]

A backlash quickly developed amongst those concerned about the potential negative consequences of the trend. Parenting experts and counselors formed anti-thigh gap movements. [1] The medical community and female-empowerment advocates have also commented critically on the subject, [14] and the U.S. National Eating Disorders Association launched a website to promote healthy body image and attitudes to food and weight. [15]

Australian plus-size model Robyn Lawley criticized the thigh gap trend, denouncing it as "just another tool of manipulation that other people are trying to use to keep me from loving my body". [16] Target Corporation apologized after Cassey Ho discovered [17] that a photo of a model had a photoshopped thigh gap for a girl's bathing suit ad. [18] Old Navy came under criticism by bloggers after a photo of a mannequin wearing women's plus-size jeans on their website appeared to have a small thigh gap placed so that the jeans on the mannequin would look thinner than they would look on an actual person. [19] Old Navy subsequently stated that they do not use any photo-editing techniques to alter the apparent shape of their products, but they do sometimes use pins on clothing to adjust how it fits a mannequin. [19]

The thigh gap has also spawned opinions from newspapers. The Times of India called it "mania". [20] Columnist Kelly Richardson of the Sacramento Bee wrote that "for most people it is next to impossible to attain". [21] In The Observer journalist Rosie Swash called the thigh gap "widespread, harmful and often unachievable". [22] Columnist Hadley Freeman called it the "most extreme body fixation yet". [23]
Geneticist Sylvia Pagán Westphal was inspired to write an opinion piece on the thigh gap after her daughter brought the trend to her attention and was appalled by the results of her Google search for the term. [24] San Jose State University sociologist Natalie Boero has attributed the trend to living in a "sexist and sizeist culture" [8] and clinical psychologist Barbara Greenberg has dismissed the trend as a "pipe dream", [8] adding "most women are not built that way to have that space between their thighs". The sickening footage, part of a grooming investigation which led to five men being jailed for a total of 27 years, will feature in a TV documentary on Sunday
This is the sickening moment a brutal paedophile puts the finishing touches to grooming a vulnerable 13-year-old girl.
The bewildered runaway has already been picked up off the street by three other cunning perverts who passed her from one to the other.
Now the youngster is in the hands of an evil abuser who kisses and hugs her at a hotel reception desk before leading her willingly away to a room.
But minutes after this CCTV footage was filmed, she was held down on the bed and raped by Shakeal Rehman, 26. He then made way for Mohahammed Shapal, 22, who also had sex with her in the same room.
Last month five men were jailed for more than 27 years over the youngster’s week-long ordeal .
But the chilling truth behind her case is now revealed by one of the senior police officers who interviewed her.
Supt Matt Fenwick said: “She has properly been groomed and she believes they love her. We know she is a victim, but she doesn’t know she is a victim. She is definitely not in victim mode.
He said paedophile targets like her “find it an exciting thing to do. They are mixing with older men. They perceive they are having a good time.
And when you’re interviewing her, she’s protecting these people. She doesn’t want to get into trouble”. He said she insisted she had not slept with any men.
His words strike at the heart of the Rotherham abuse scandal in which 1,400 children were groomed and abused by Asian gangs over 16 years.
And Rotherham is where the 13-year-old’s nightmare began after she ran away from her home in Sheffield.
As police persisted with their investigation, the scared youngster – called Marta in a BBC2 child abuse documentary to be screened on Sunday – finally told how she was picked up by a taxi driver in the South Yorkshire town.
Det Sgt Cath Ragheb, who also quizzed her, revealed: “She says she stays in the taxi driver’s bed, he’s saying to her ‘Oh you’re beautiful’, and ‘you’re lovely’ and starts kissing her. She says he’s sexually assaulted her four times.”
The cabbie left Marta at a bus stop with another man who promised to get her to Leeds. He called her “beautiful” and said he wanted to be her boyfriend.
She ended up in Bradford, and was picked up by a man called Shaz who took her home and molested her.
After he dropped her in the city centre, Rehman arrived in his car with Shapal and offered her help. He took her to the hotel and raped her.
Marta said: “He held me down so I couldn’t breathe. He raped me then. He was laughing all the time.”
She was then passed to Shapal who also assaulted her, telling her he loved her. She said Shapal was “kind’ and called her his “princess”.
DNA evidence revealed the semen of at least four men on her underwear and on bedding.
Rehman got 12 years for rape and trafficking. Shapal got four years for sexual activity with a child and trafficking while Yaseen Amini, 37, was jailed for five and a half years for the same offences.
Usman Ali, 21, was given three years for sexual activity with a child and Bekir Rasheed, 36, got four years for trafficking.
The Rotherham scandal broke after the BBC had filmed Marta’s case. A report said victims were ignored by social workers and police.
Deputy Chief Constable Andy Holt says lessons have been learned.
He admitted 10 years ago police would simply have returned a runaway like Marta to her parents or social services.
He said: “These days I think we recognise the phenomenon that actually sometimes the victims don’t recognise themselves,” he added.
But Marta has to live with the aftermath.
She said: “I am trying to forget what happened but I can’t. I want to warn others.”
Her father added: “My daughter will suffer her whole life.”
