In the 8th, lightning-fast outfielder Kavares Tears beat out an infield single, stole second, and then scored on a clutch double by Hunter Ensley. Tie game.

Then, in the bottom of the 9th, with two outs and the bases loaded, Blake Burke—the slumping senior—stood at the plate. The count ran full. The Vanderbilt pitcher fired a fastball. Burke swung…

The ball soared deep into the Tennessee night, clearing the right-field wall for a walk-off grand slam. The stadium exploded. Teammates mobbed Burke at home plate as fireworks lit up the sky. The Vols had done the impossible—they had beaten Vanderbilt.

The Turning Point

That win sparked an unbelievable run. The Vols won 12 of their next 14 games, storming into the SEC Tournament with newfound confidence. Drew Beam returned to form, striking out 10 in a shutout against Florida. Burke became the hottest hitter in the league, and Curley’s defense at third base turned into highlight reels.

By June, Tennessee found themselves in Omaha at the College World Series, facing Vanderbilt once again—this time with a national title on the line. And in a storybook ending, the Vols prevailed, winning their first championship in program history.
