The song is an ode to the power of the masses in the face of evil. It is written against the backdrop of George W. Bush and the war on civil liberties. People canβt look away any longer; they must take a stand.
Vocalist David Draiman says the song evokes the βstrength, unity, conviction, power, and the exhilaration that you feel when you get to see that at one of our showsβ¦ Itβs one of my favorite moments, and people know that I have an affinity for asking people to put their fists in the air, and itβs just, itβs exhilaration to be able to see ten thousand raised fists or more.β

I first heard Disturbed on the radio with their cover of Genesis "Land of Confusion." I'm a big Genesis fan, though not so much of the Invisible Touch era, and had to admit Disturbed's version of the track is better and made me reconsider the song. Later, I heard another track (I think it was "Just Stop"). I wrote down some of the lyrics and looked it up and, alas! it was by the same band on the same CD! Well, I better buy it, and I am glad I did. These guys rock! The vocals are superb and, lyrically, their tracks are interesting with a lot of meat to them. I recommend this CD to anyone into power metal. It is heavy yet very accessible (half the tracks are under 4 furious minutes). "Ten Thousand Fists" (3:32): Explosive opener with pounding drums! Sets a powerful image: "You will remember the night you were struck by the sight of ten thousand fists in the air." "Just Stop" (3:43): Excellent! A lot of passion, especially at the chorus: "all that you want is to criticize something for nothing..." Interesting theme: "enough of the limitless critical comments...[and] pseudo-involvement." "Guarded" (3:20): My favorite track. There is so much passion in the vocals and the guitar riffs. To me, it is very moving yet rocks. Great line: "why does it sound like the devil is laughing." Is guarding one's self from relationships the work of the devil? Interesting idea. "Deify" (4:17): Probably my second favorite track on this CD. It flat out rocks! Excellent lyrics: "It seems so clear now what I must do / you're no immortal, I won't let them / deify you / they view you as the new messiah / deify you / renew belief in some demented man." The guitar riff at the bridge really brings up the intensity. They have clips of George W. Bush before the track, but the lyrics are not specifically about the president. "Stricken" (4:05): Another rocker with plenty of passion and excellent vocals: "When the heart is cold, there's no hope." "I'm Alive" (4:41): Starts out slower yet intense. It rocks but is more restrained and deliberate. "Sons of Plunder" (3:47): This track picks up the tempo similar to most of the other songs here. Lyrically, this track is less political. It comes down to a lower pop cultural level about sheep following trends that have been done before: "as the countless numbers hunger for worldwide renown / all the p*mping sons of plunder will roll up their sleeves." "Overburdened" (5:57): The longest track. Beautiful bass/guitar and vocals at the beginning, then picks up but not losing its beauty. "If only I was born another time / h*ll is still overburdened / I must stand and wait in line / h*ll is still overburdened / how have I been so determined malign?" "Decadence" (3:24): An OK track. Nothing too special but it has that Disturbed sound, so it rocks. Not many lyrics. "Forgiven" (4:12): Vocalist David Draiman really takes over this track. I don't know where he takes a breath sometimes. He has a lot of stamina (as he shows off big time on "Pain Redefined"). "Land of Confusion" (4:49): The classic Genesis track never sounded so good. As a lifelong Genesis fan, I can say Disturbed does this track more than justice. I've never enjoyed this track more (not even watching the Spitting Image Ronald Reagan video). Excellent vocals. I like how he elongates the verses. "Sacred Lie" (3:05): Accessible rocker. "Pain Redefined" (4:17): Talk about vocal stamina! Does this guy ever take a breath? Incredible! Very impressive. The song also kicks. My third or fourth favorite on this CD. "Avarice" (2:56): The shortest track but it rocks so hard, it doesn't seem that short. It even has a nice bridge. "Politics and evil / all one and the same."
Arrived on time and well packaged. My adult son likes this cd.
This is the 3rd Release from Disturbed... unfortunately, to me, it's a lot of things, but not nearly as good as the 1st 2 albums. Here's how I got there: 1. For the most part, they've lost the 'edge' contained in the 1st album. The 1st Album was all energy, relentless & non-stop attack -- this album, sounds like they're giving up on using music as a weapon - and are now using it as a soap box, to preach to us about, their politics. 2. Frankly, if I wanted to hear about politics, I'd turn on CNN or similar channels. I get that this is a F'd up time - and that's going to undoubtedly influence music, across the board - in every genre, to some extent --- but I'd expect Disturbed to take that F'd up stuff, and throw it back in our faces, with lots of energy & destruction.... instead, they just gripe about Pres. Bush ---- and sing their political messages. 3. With politics aside - and with the Lyrical content aside (majority of which is also political), the music just isn't even close to what it should be, coming from Disturbed. EVERY song sounds like the one before it... both musically & vocally! There's little to no creativeness or independence when it comes to each track... they just all run together, like something off a production line - made to be bottled / boxed / shipped, uniformly & compatably. 4. With struggle, & especially political struggle & the struggle from "war" -- music in the past (and past generational music) generally IMPROVED. It gave people a reason to speak, a reason to sing & write, it provoked thought & feelings that otherwise laid dormant, etc. etc. -- There was more thought provoking content / music, on the last album... even on the 1st!! And the 1st album wasn't meant to make you think!! Disturbed's album, the real album (what could've been) was lost somewhere when it was made into a political "statement". You want to make a political statement, that's great - more power to ya!... some excellent songs are politically driven... but to devote an entire album to it... well, not only is it boring to listen to musically - but lyrically as well. Since it's all the same idea, the tracks / songs, all sound alike -- no discernable difference for the most part. Hopefully they got it out of their system. Probably not. After all, they started the whole "music as a weapon" thing... well, they've taken it a bit too seriously... and definitely too far. Unfortunately they didn't learn from A Perfect Circle's album "eMotive" -- same principle (all political songs - only Covers from older songs, mostly from the 60's & Vietnam era). I'm really afraid that Disturbed may continue this trend of thinking their music will somehow shape the world, or help mold it, or change / open the eyes of their fans, etc. through their music... because if that's the case - more of these albums will follow -- and they'll have no fans left. Music Inspires, Entertains, and sometimes - can provoke thought & conversation... but you can't make Every track, and certainly not every album (if future LPs continue trend) and actually expect you'll stay successful... let alone "change the world" or "wake people up". People know what's going on -- they use Music as an outlet to escape, enrage, have fun with, or take comfort in... that's it... to think otherwise is foolish. I think the worst thing is... by writing this, I come off as a Right-Winger... Rush Limbaugh wanna-be Republican, saying anything to discredit the Liberals of Disturbed. It's actually not the case! I'm not Republican... but I sure as hell don't want my music to be something that can be played at a Democratic Convention, while Ted Kennedy head-bangs to the tracks!! ---Follow UP--- (Oct 2009) It's been a couple years since I wrote this... and while I still feel the same way, regarding the political messages... I have to admit, many of the songs have grown on me & I now listen to nearly all of them quite frequently. Maybe that was Disturbed's plan all along... (regarding slow & steady saturation & acceptance of their views via their music)... I don't know... I feel conflicted about (some of) the review now, having re-read it. I think my distaste for the "messages/views" being shoved down our throats while listening to it, really put me off & made me dislike what was otherwise a decent musical effort...... that said.... musically (NOT lyrically), again, after all this time, I'd have to say the album deserves 4 stars... but it just really irritates me (even now), when I actually LISTEN to what's being sung. Maybe the reason it's grown on me, is because I've learned to assign my own "meaning/message" to those songs... rather than listen to them, knowing what Dave intended/meant himself; and NOT just accept that there's only 1 political message to be construed from the song. While that isn't possible for 1 of the songs (you know which)... it's seems to have worked, for me, to do that... but hell, it took 2-3 years for my brain to be able to "reprogram" the intended view/message for each one. (hopefully that makes sense) I still wouldn't recommend this album for kids & teens, because they'll take the messages/views at face value -- and if they're listening to it, that means they're absorbing it, on some level, either consciously or subconsciously... and I'm sorry; but that IS indoctrination... and it's wrong. It has no place in music, and for that very reason..... kids/teens will adopt those views/messages as their own... without knowing (or caring about) the facts, the "other side", etc. etc. etc. People have to be willing to Openly Debate things; & Be willing to Concede when they're wrong.... and it's been my experience, that people with these kinds of views, NEVER openly debate anything... let alone, concede, &/or admit when they're wrong. Nothing is ever solved when 1 side refuses to give ground, admit the other is right, or whatever the case may be..... and I am truly, sincerely, concerned... when music & art, are used as political indoctrination... by EITHER "side".

Ten Thousand Fists - Disturbed
The general themes of the album are protest, defiance/rebellion etc. The only real "weakness" is that most of the songs do have a similar sound and feel. That said, Disturbed are great band, with one of the best metal vocalists in David Draiman and Dan Donegan contributes the odd searing guitar lead, in addition to his normal crushing riffs. While most tracks individually are very listenable, few really stick in your mind, other than the title track and their cover of the Genesis song Land of Confusion. I'd class I'm Alive and Overburdened as the other standout tracks - unfortunately there is a fair amount of "filler" on TTF too. While there are changes of tempo, the overall feel and style remain very much the same. If they'd cut the track listing from 14 to 10 and left out some of the more generic songs, this would have been a better album. 1. Ten Thousand Fists - 9/10 2. Just Stop - 7/10 3. Guarded - 7/10 4. Deify - 7/10 5. Stricken - 8/10 6. I'm Alive - 9/10 7. Sons of Plunder - 8/10 8. Overburdened - 9/10 9. Decadence - 6/10 10. Forgiven - 6/10 11. Land of Confusion - 10/10 12. Sacred Lie - 7/10 13. Pain Redefined - 8/10 14. Avarice - 7/10

Awesome Music
Disturbed are a great band and this CD just adds to my collection of their music. If you like this i would recommend: the sickness, Believe, Indestructible. Disturbed have some of the best metal music that is around at the moment. Unfortunately i think the price of ten thousand fists and believe is quite high. If you want to buy indestructible and the sickness i would recommend looking at your local HMV because i got mine there and they were both in the 2 for Β£10 section. However amazon is better for the other 2 on price.

Excellent album
Brilliant album, if you know Disturbed then you should know this one even if you don't have it. Naturally some tracks will stick out more than others but overall an excellent album and worth adding to your collection, especially if you are a fan.

Head-banging fist-pumping metal at its best
The first Disturbed album I've listened to, Ten Thousand Fists is an absolutely superb introduction to a great metal band. Powerful, evocative, great lyrics and full of raw passion. I'll definitely be listening to more. For me, Avarice sums up the best of this head-banging fist-pumping album
