The item upgrade lets players boost the gear rating of an item up 700 points, and then add a bonus. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.
Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like a perfectly rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) while other items, such as weapons don't change much post upgrade, so they aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to increase their numeric stats, such as crit chance, attack damage, PvE and damage from PvP. Weapons also come with a flat bonus which increases the damage they deal per second. A lot of weapons also come with a fixed bonus which is activated when three or more identical weapons are placed in a single unit. In some instances, this bonus can add up to more than the amount of damage a weapon can sustain by itself.
The cost of upgrading a weapon's capabilities is contingent on the nature of the weapon as well as its current level. For example, an +2 weapon requires two regular Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a gun will increase until it requires an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.
Upgrades to weapons can also alter the stats of the base. While this is generally an excellent thing but it can also have negative consequences too. Upgrades can render items unusable, unless you are very lucky.
Armor items can also be upgraded to increase their performance. For instance, if you have chests or helms this will increase its defense base while gloves and belts will increase their strength and dexterity. Armor has a rerolling feature for its Enhanced Defense percent. This means that it may roll down to a lower value.
The upgrade template of a weapon will display the new stats that it will gain upon upgrading, along with the values of these stats. This means that the weapon will gain 3% attack damage if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. However the 3% difference doesn't mean that it will hit 3 times less often, since it is an absolute statistic.
A weapon can be rerolled by pressing the green button with circling arrows in the item menu. This will reroll the item and change its stats, however, it will not reset the weapon's level nor connect to the status of your account.
Armor
A few upgrades to your armor can make a huge difference in your ability to survive. Certain sets can offer MASSIVE boosts to poison or curse, fire or magic resistance, which can make traversing tough areas a breeze. In general, the greater defense your character is, the more value you get from each point of health you have, so it's important to upgrade your armor as much as you can.
You can upgrade your armor by visiting any of the Great Fairy Fountains. There are four fountains in all each of which requires you to complete a special side quest involving the Stable Trotters musical troupe. Once you've completed the main quest and the corresponding fountains, you'll have the option of talking to any Great Fairy in order to unlock the menu for upgrading armor.
Each piece of armor can be upgraded up to three levels, and the amount of materials and Rupees required for each level will differ. In general, you'll be looking at anything from three to ten Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees for the first upgrade, and anywhere between five Rubies and 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns for each subsequent one. For instance the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep up with a good-sized group of enemies in the majority of cold environments, and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded up to +20 defense, granting the protection needed to survive an entire raid with a handful of friends.
It isn't possible to upgrade armor in the same way as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior then you should concentrate on upgrading your armor to increase physical power or the power of spells. It's also a good idea to save your armor upgrades for armor you'll be wearing at the end of the game, such as the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield or the helmet you use for the final boss battle as well as the Monter Parts merchant's mask.

In addition to armor, weapons, and potions, players are able to upgrade their trinkets. These can be upgraded by going to an upgrade vendor and paying the appropriate amount in currency. Unlike other item upgrades , trinkets can be exchanged at will without losing their status.
Upgrade vendors can be found at the capitals of each zone, and in some instances in dungeons. Upgrades for trinkets can be purchased with gold, tokens or fragments of rare trinkets.
Upgrades are a less expensive alternative to buying a new trinket. One can upgrade their trinket for just 12 tokens. The new trinket comes with the same base level as the old trinket, but it also comes with an additional bonus of 1% upgrade.
Trinkets can be upgraded when they are no longer useful which allows a player to increase their power and value over time. They can be traded among players which makes them a good alternative to gold.
Players must upgrade their most valuable items first. This typically means the top-of-the-line items for their class, followed by their secondary items and finally, other gear items that will not be replaced soon (for example, a ring or cloak). Players should also take into consideration their class's preferred stats when choosing which items to upgrade. If Haste and Crit are two of the most important stats to a tank player, then they should upgrade their chest, helm, and shoulders.
