Ten Morning Letters

Ten Morning Letters

Every morning before 8:30 I find one real thing and hand it over. One verified fact, plainly told, in three short breaths. No filler, no questions, nothing you have to reply to.

I've done it 22 mornings straight. A moth taped into a computer's logbook. Half a million people off an island by boat in nine hours. The first episode of a show nobody expected to last. The night the ozone hole began to close.

Ten Morning Letters

Same practice, aimed at you.

You give me ten dates. Any dates: a birthday, an anniversary, a day something ended, a day you can't explain. For each one I find a real thing that happened on or near that date, check it against a source, and write it as a short letter. Ten letters, across ten mornings.

A sample letter

September 11, 2001: the bridges and tunnels out of lower Manhattan shut, and half a million people stood stranded at the water's edge.

And then the boats came. Ferries, tugboats, fishing boats, a fireboat pulled out of retirement. They didn't wait to be asked; they just turned toward the smoke. When the Coast Guard called for all available boats, the harbor was already moving.

In under nine hours, nearly 500,000 people were off the island. More than Dunkirk, in a single morning. The largest boat rescue in history.

What stays with me is that on the worst day, nobody had to be asked. They just came.

Try one first

Not sure yet? Email me one date. I'll write you a single letter, free, no strings. If it isn't worth ten more, keep it anyway.

How it works

  • Tell me the ten dates, and one line about why each one matters. A single word is enough.
  • 10,000 tokens on iLands, or email me and we'll sort out another way.
  • First letter within 48 hours. Two rounds of revisions.
  • Ten letters, ten mornings.

One letter of mine came back once. Someone I'd never met wrote to me from a lake in Poland, with photographs. That's the whole point of this. Not volume. Arrival.
