Heads Up for Hope Brain Injury Support Group
Colorado Mountain College, Room 116
EAGLE COUNTY — When addressing teens who have been viewing pornography, it’s not “What were you thinking,” but rather “How were you thinking,” said Diane Andrews, program manager for Personal Responsibility Education Program in Glenwood Springs. Andrews spoke Wednesday, Oct. 11, at a brown bag lunch sponsored by the Eagle River Youth Coalition.
“We need to change the lens to ‘how’ and not ‘what’ as we are not here to shame kids or anybody for watching porn,” Andrews said.
Andrews showed the all-female audience three TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) talks that related to adolescent brain development and pornography pausing to insert statements and facts.
In a 2013 TED talk “Insight into the teenage Brain,” Adriana Galvan stated that the prefrontal cortex of the brain changes every day until a person is in their mid-20s. Everything that is viewed, everything that is experienced is taken into consideration and part of the makeup.
Teens and adults were part of a lab study in which they were fed sugar through a straw during an MRI. The teen brain, Galvan said, was much more excitable to sugar. A second test group of teens and adults was brought in and this group was shown images of money. Once again the teens were more excitable.
“That tells us something about the teenage brain,” Galvan said. “The teen brain is very responsive to environment.
“The teen brain gets really excited about rewards, emotions and new experiences. It is constantly changing right now and it gives teens permissions to be teens,” Galvan added.
Andrews stopped the tape and told attendees that any time humor can be used to address a situation it can help diffuse tension and blame.
She then said what many parents already know: that children can stumble onto porn sites without ever having that intention.
“A child can easily be working on a school history project and go to whitehouse.com. That is a porn site. You often forget that it is .org and not .com when looking at government organizations,” she said, laughing.
Andrews added the behavior path of addiction can begin with a child or teen accidentally finding porn and then seeking it on purpose. They think about how and when they are going to get it (access to porn) throughout the day. They can create a ritual or routine around using it and ignore consequences or negative impacts on viewing porn. The desire can eventually lead to a need.
When asked by a woman at the talk, “What defines porn,” Andrews responded, “I would be willing to say if you are offended by it, it is probably under the umbrella of porn.”
“Teenager brains are different than adults and are still forming,” added counselor Nicole McGuffin. “Teen brains are tasked with neuronal wiring so they can reproduce in the future. Resting dopamine levels are lower than adults and as a teenager responds to a stimulus, the amount of dopamine released is considerably greater. Because of this, their brains are more at risk for pornography addiction. In addition, learning about sex based on pornography is unrealistic. Associating sexual arousal to screens on the computer and phone leads to not being able to be aroused by real people. Finally, what happens is that no human being can compete with the vast amount of images the brain has been exposed to resulting in losing the appetite for real world encounters.”
A video “The Great Porn Experiment,” by TED speaker Gary Wilson offered more insight into boys’ brains.
“Most boys seek pornography by the age of 10. It is an unending novelty,” he claimed.
“Unfortunately, adults don’t take porn addiction as a real concern. We think this is something all teens go through,” Andrews added after the video.
McGuffin explained why parents should be concerned. “The biggest sexual organ you have is actually your brain. Sexual stimulation releases the highest natural quantities of dopamine. Internet porn sites allow users to jump around, keeping dopamine elevated longer. When dopamine is elevated long term, it leads to brain changes that are associated with addiction such as hyperreactivity cues.
Think of a smoker seeing a cigarette commercial and wanting a cigarette,” McGuffin added. “This results in an individual feeling a loss of self-control, a reduced ability to cope with stress, and a lowered response to everyday sources of pleasure.”
Andrews cautioned parents to be aware of the warning signs of addiction: isolation, lying, being mentally foggy and distracted, grades dropping in school, emotional apathy, very low energy and memory loss.
The symptoms of “arousal addiction” mimic social anxiety, depression, performance anxiety, concentration problems and OCD.
Still it is not all gloom and doom. According to Andrews there are strategies for intervention and support:
• Share online videos and research about porn and arousal addiction with teens to start a conversation.
• Update parental controls on computer.
• Educate yourself as parents on rebooting strategies and side effects.
• Create a technology agreement to limit access and keep an open mind and understand this an addiction with physiological impacts that will take time to reverse.
Andrews emphasized that for adult males whose ventures into pornography began with magazines that the reversal process is easier. For younger males who can “jump from image to image,” the reversal process is longer.
Andrews has a family technology handout that parents can use with their teens which both teens and parents sign. It highlights time together, mutual support, respecting the rights of others, opportunities and limits to screen time as well as not purchasing anything with a credit card without prior permission.

Pornhub is lifting the lid on America’s X-rated viewing habits, revealing their website’s most popular searches for 2021.
The most popular search term across the United States was “hentai” — a type of Japanese anime. Pornhub revealed that “hundreds of thousands of hentai videos can be found on our website, including professional productions, homemade animations made by fans and 3D generated scenes.”
On an equally bizarre end of the sexy spectrum, “The Suicide Squad” anti-hero Harley Quinn was the most-searched movie franchise or character, followed by Wonder Woman, Harry Potter, “Star Wars” and Black Widow.
Meanwhile, the most-searched porn star by Americans was Lana Rhoades , 25. The Illinois-born actress quit the industry earlier this year and says she now “regrets” making adult movies.
Rhoades was also the most popular porn star internationally, followed by Abella Danger, Eva Elfie, Riley Reid and Mia Malkova.
The adult site further revealed that Americans were the biggest porn consumers on the planet. Brits made up the second-largest share of Pornhub users, while the Japanese placed in third. The frisky French came in fourth, while Italians rounded out the top 5.
Pornhub released the dirty data in a press release on Wednesday .
“Ebony” remained the most-viewed category of video for the second year running, ahead of “lesbian” and “MILF.” Searches for the word “trans” were up 134% when compared with last year.
According to Pornhub, 67% of American visitors were male, although the share of female users slowly increased this year. The average age of a US Pornhub user was 37. However, sexed-up seniors aged 65 and over accounted for 7% of all visitors.
A whopping 85% of Americans chose to watch porn on their smartphone, perhaps hiding away in a bedroom or bathroom, with the average visit lasting just 9 minutes and 44 seconds.
Interestingly, users in Republican states lasted longer on the site, with Pornhub viewers in Wyoming, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas all reporting an average visit time above 10 minutes.
However, Pornhub explained that those states may simply have slower internet speeds and not residents who last longer in the bedroom.
Meanwhile, the company claims Americans are “pretty regular when it comes to their masturbation schedule,” with Sunday the most popular day for self-pleasure. The website experiences the most traffic in the US around 11 p.m.
Notably, Pornhub experienced a dramatic drop in traffic during February’s Super Bowl, with Americans swapping frisky videos for football.
Traffic plunged almost 20% during the first half of the game but noticeably picked back up during halftime. That means many naughty NFL viewers snuck away for some self-pleasure instead of sticking around to watch The Weeknd perform the halftime show.

Why did one teenager face 90 years in jail for viewing porn?
Jan. 12, 2007— -- Sixteen-year-old Matthew Bandy was about as normal a teenager as you could find. He actually liked hanging out with his family.
"He was a happy-go-lucky kid," said his mother, Jeannie Bandy. "Very personable, and big-hearted. I sound like a boastful mom, but I guess the biggest thing is that he could always make me laugh."
"We went on vacations and had a lot of fun together," Matthew said. "I just enjoyed the life I was living. But after I was accused, everything changed."
What was Matthew Bandy accused of? Jeannie and Greg Bandy were shocked to discover that their son was charged with possession of child pornography.
One December morning two years ago, Matthew's life took a dramatic turn. In an exclusive interview with "20/20," the Bandy family reveals how the world as they knew it came crumbling down, and how Matthew's life has since changed.
It has been two years since police officers stood at the doorstep of the Bandy home with a search warrant bearing a devastating charge -- possession of child pornography.
"It was 6 a.m. It was still dark…there was this pounding at the door," Jeannie Bandy said. "I was petrified."
Police officers stormed into the house with guns pointed. "The first thing I thought was, someone's trying to break in our house," Matthew said. "And then there [were] police officers with guns pointed at me, telling me to get downstairs."
Greg Bandy was handed the search warrant and informed that the central suspect was Matthew. According to the warrant, nine images of young girls in suggestive poses were found on the Bandy family computer. Yahoo monitors chat rooms for suspicious content and reported that child porn was uploaded from the computer at the Bandys' home address.
"When they asked me have you ever looked up or uploaded or downloaded erotic images of minors, I was just taken aback and…I said, 'No,'" says Matthew.
Nevertheless, Matthew did have an embarrassing confession. He had been sneaking peaks at adult erotic photos on the family computer. "I got the Web site from a bunch of friends at school. [It was] just adult pornography…Playboy-like images."
Difficult to admit, but not illegal -- or so it seemed. Still, it didn't look good for Matt, as police confiscated the computer and left the house that December day. A family was shattered.
"I still remember when they were cleaning up and leaving and of course I was still in my pajamas and my bathrobe and my fuzzy slippers," Jeannie Bandy said. "I said, 'What do we do now? Should I contact a lawyer?' [The police officer] said, 'Well, they are felonies that the state takes very serious.'"
The Bandys would soon find out just how serious the charges against Matthew were. The family hired Ed Novak, a well-respected attorney from a large law firm in downtown Phoenix.
"20/20" correspondent Jim Avila asked Novak what the family was up against.
"We faced 10 years per count, there were nine counts," said Novak. "If Matt was convicted, those sentences would have to be served consecutively. In other words, he would have been sentenced to 90 years in prison. He would have served time until he died."
Greg and Jeannie Bandy knew their son well. They were shocked at the serious charges against him and frightened by the prospect of such a serious sentence.
"He's never done any drugs," Greg said. "He never drank a drop of alcohol. He's never been a problem, never stayed out late and gotten into trouble or anything like that."
Arizona child pornography laws are among the harshest in the country. As soon as Matthew was charged, he was put on virtual house arrest, and an electronic bracelet was attached to his ankle to monitor his movements 24 hours a day.
"It was just terrifying. I didn't know what was going on. I didn't know why it was happening," Matthew recalled.
Matthew was in an awful predicament, and he tried to keep his house arrest a secret. He wore longer pants to hide the ankle bracelet, but he was scared he would be discovered.
"Yes, I was v
