Most Khajuraho temples were built between 950 and 1050 by the Chandela dynasty. Historical records note that the Khajuraho temple site had 85 temples by 12th century, spread over 20 square kilometers. Of these, only about 20 temples have survived, spread over 6 square kilometers. Of the various surviving temples, the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is decorated with a profusion of sculptures with intricate details, symbolism and expressiveness of ancient Indian art

Some scholars suggest these to be tantric sexual practices.] Other scholars state that the erotic arts are part of Hindu tradition of treating kama as an essential and proper part of human life, and its symbolic or explicit display is common in Hindu temples. James McConnachie, in his history of the Kamasutra, describes the sexual-themed Khajuraho sculptures as "the apogee of erotic art":

RUBENS et autres : CATHOLICISME et HUMANISME: LE NU DANS LA PEINTURE EUROPEENNE.
Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) est un peintre emblématique de la peinture européenne pendant la période qui peut être appelée "Catholique-Humaniste". De 1500 à 1800, pendant trois siècles environ, la peinture européenne, dans une partie importante de l'Europe, est inspirée par deux idéologies très différentes, qui pourraient même être considérées comme opposées à bien des points de vue. Pourtant pendant toute cette période les deux idéologies ont voisiné sans affrontements majeurs : le Catholicisme qui a triomphé en Europe progressivement à partir du 5è siècle et l'Humanisme héritier de la pensée de païenne de l'Antiquité gréco-romaine, apparu au 16è siècle, ont coexisté en paix, de manière complémentaire et non antagoniste.
Les pays concernés par cet art Catholique-Humaniste sont l'Italie, la France, les Pays Bas du sud, l'Allemagne comprenant tout l'ensemble austro-hongrois, y compris un peu à la marge l'Allemagne du Nord protestante mais luthérienne, la Pologne, la péninsule Ibérique.
Sont évidemment exclus de cette zone les pays convertis au protestantisme calviniste comme les Pays-Bas du Nord. De même sont aussi exclus les pays Slaves orthodoxes dont les évolution idéologiques différentes ont donné naissance à un art distinct.
L'Angleterre est aussi à l'écart de cette zone Catholique-Humaniste qui correspond à la partie de l'Europe autrefois intégrée à l'Empire Romain. En effet l'Angleterre romaine était de population celtique, mais elle a été conquise et submergée à partir du 5è siècle par des populations germaniques et scandinaves tout à fait extérieures à l'influence gréco-romaine. Le séparatisme anglican et les orientations idéologiques puritaines sont des manifestations de cette divergence des cultures.
Les tableaux de Peter Paul Rubens alternent avec une remarquable constance les thèmes inspirés par la religion catholique car Rubens est un des peintres majeurs de la Contre-Réforme Catholique, et les oeuvres inspirées par la mythologie ou l'histoire gréco-romaine. Le Christ, la Vierge, les Saints et les Saintes voisinent sans heurts aucuns avec Vénus, Hercules, les Nymphes et les Satyres. La femme Rubénienne est tout à fait remarquable de ce point de vue par la coexistence de la femme catholique habillée et de la femme mythologique nue. La nudité, féminine ou masculine, est très présente dans tout l'art Rubénien. Elle est présente dans toute la peinture européenne de la zone et la période catholique-humaniste telle que précédemment définie. Certes les clientèles destinataires des oeuvres ne sont pas tout à fait identiques : L'Eglise, qui s'adresse aux peuples, habille la femme, et l'homme, sauf Adam et Eve, seulement d'une feuille de vigne. L'aristocratie et la haute bourgeoisie de l'Europe catholique-humaniste les déshabillent. Contrairement aux pays protestants ou orthodoxes où toute nudité du corps humain est totalement absente, du haut en bas de la hiérachie sociale, la société des pays catholiques-romains est très tolérante vis à vis du nu. Tout au moins en haut de l'échelle sociale et dans la peinture.
L'opposition sur ce point entre l'art rubénien et l'art des peintres des Pays Bas du Nord est absolument évidente. Les femmes de Rubens (1577-1640) et celles de Frans Hals (1582-1666), deux contemporains, ne se ressemblent aucunement. Seul Rembrandt (1606-1669), pour des raisons mal connues, a maintenu, en pays protestant calviniste, quelques très rares thèmes où subsistent le nu mythologique ou inspiré par l'Ancien Testament. La peinture de Rubens, artiste qui été le peintre officiel de l'Eglise de la Contre-Réforme, est la preuve que l'église catholique n'a pas été d'esprit puritain. C'est un fait qui était établi dès "la Renaissance" dont les Papes ont été parmi les inspirateurs les plus influents. Ce voisinage non conflictuel du Catholicisme et de l'Humanisme est une constante qu'exprime très bien toute la peinture et la sculpture d'une grande partie de l'Europe pendant trois siècles. L'Italie, la France, l'Allemagne, l'Autriche-Hongrie, la Belgique, ont été les centres principaux de cet art dialectique. La péninsule ibérique appartient aussi à cette zone mais avec des tendances beaucoup plus réservées vis à vis du nu féminin ou masculin.
Le nu humain est un sujet délicat, très provocateur, absolument interdit dans certaines cultures et civilisations. L'interdiction du nu est très révélatrice des idéologies qui gouvernent une société. En bien, en mal, ou autrement. Ces différences expriment des approches diverses de l'humain selon les cultures et les idéologies religieuses ou profanes qui les animent. Certaines cultures jettent l'anathème contre la nudité, d'autres non.
L'Antiquité gréco-romaine, non seulement n'excluait pas le nu féminin ou masculin, mais elle avait fait du nu une de ses dominantes esthétiques et éthiques. La beauté du corps humain était considéré comme le reflet de l'harmonie du monde. C'est une particularité dans l'histoire des civilisations.
L'Egypte Ancienne était une société socialement et politiquement très féministe. La femme, ou l'homme nus ne sont pas du tout absents de sa peinture et de sa sculpture, mais ils sont représentés de manière à éviter tout approche érotique. Ce qui n'est absolument pas le cas de l'art Grec.
Ce qu'il est possible d'apercevoir de l'art Sumérien et Mésopotamien, sémitique, exclut à peu près totalement la nudité.
Le Judaïsme, l 'Islam, l'Orthodoxie, le Protestantisme, le Bouddhisme excluent absolument la nudité, féminine ou masculine. Sauf pour le Bouddhisme un nu masculin au niveau du torse.
Le Catholicisme n'a pas exclut dans les sociétés qu'il a inspiré toute représentation du nu masculin ou féminin, selon les périodes certes : Rubens, et tout l'art de l'Europe catholique entre 1500 et 1800, en sont la preuve.
L'Hindouisme est une civilisation exceptionnelle en ce sens que pendant des millénaires, malgré la censure islamique qui s'est exercée sur ce sous-continent pendant des siècles, l'Inde va représenter le nu humain, féminin, masculin, même érotique, sans plonger dans les abîmes d'un matérialisme vulgaire et obsessionnel comme celui auquel on assiste dans notre Occident actuel.
Ce sont des faits, qui sont des sujets de réflexion très actuels. Le nu et la sexualité peuvent ne pas être un tabou, une interdiction, un voile, sauf situations très spécifiques. Le nu et la sexualité peuvent aussi ne pas être une obsession ou une marchandise. Entre le nu sain, naturel, instinctif, intéressé, et celui vulgaire, obsédé, scatologique, il existe une grande différence.
Rubens représente en Europe un moment d'équilibre entre un Catholicisme re-conquérant, mais libéral, pas du tout puritain et un Humanisme, pas nécessairement amoral ni obsédé par la sexualité, inspiré par le paganisme antique. Un équilibre qui a duré à peu près trois siècles dans une partie importante de l'Europe et dont Rubens a été l'un des interprètes les plus talentueux.
RUBENS and others: CATHOLICISM and HUMANISM: THE NUDE IN EUROPEAN PAINTING.
Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is an emblematic painter of European painting during the period that can be called "Catholic-Humanist". From 1500 to 1800, for about three centuries, European painting, in a large part of Europe, was inspired by two very different ideologies, which could even be seen as opposed in many respects. Yet throughout this period the two ideologies coexisted without major clashes: Catholicism, which gradually triumphed in Europe from the 5th century onwards, and Humanism, heir to the pagan thought of Greco-Roman antiquity, which appeared in the 16th century, coexisted in peace, in a complementary rather than antagonistic manner.
The countries concerned by this Catholic-Humanist art are Italy, France, the southern Netherlands, Germany including the whole Austro-Hungarian ensemble, including a little on the fringe Protestant but Lutheran North Germany, Poland, the Iberian Peninsula.
Obviously, countries converted to Calvinist Protestantism, such as the Northern Netherlands, are excluded from this zone. Also excluded are orthodox Slavic countries whose different ideological developments have given rise to a distinct art.
England is also excluded from this Catholic-Humanist zone, which corresponds to the part of Europe that was once part of the Roman Empire. Indeed, Roman England was of Celtic population, but it was conquered and submerged from the 5th century onwards by Germanic and Scandinavian populations completely outside the Greco-Roman influence. Anglican separatism and Puritan ideological orientations are manifestations of this divergence of cultures.
Peter Paul Rubens' paintings alternate with remarkable consistency between themes inspired by the Catholic religion, as Rubens was one of the major painters of the Catholic Counter-Reformation, and works inspired by Greco-Roman mythology or history. Christ, the Virgin, the Saints, and the Saints women are in close proximity to Venus, Hercules, the Nymphs and the Satyrs. The Rubenian woman is quite remarkable from this point of view by the coexistence of the dressed Catholic woman and the naked mythological woman. Nudity, whether feminine or masculine, is very present in all Rubenian art. It is present in all European painting of the area and the Catholic-humanist period as previously defined. Admittedly, the clientele to whom the works are addressed are not completely identical: the Church, which addresses the people, dresses the woman, and the man, except for Adam and Eve, only with a vine leaf. The aristocracy and the high bourgeoisie of Catholic-humanist Europe undress them. Contrary to Protestant or Orthodox countries where the nudity of the human body is totally absent from the top to the bottom of the social hierarchy, the society of the Roman Catholic countries is very tolerant towards the naked. At least at the top of the social hierarchy and in painting.
The opposition on this point between Rubenian art and the art of the painters of the Northern Netherlands is absolutely obvious. The women of Rubens (1577-1640) and those of Frans Hals (1582-1666), two contemporaries, are in no way alike. Only Rembrandt (1606-1669), for reasons that are not well known, maintained, in Calvinist Protestant country, a few very rare themes in which the mythological or Old Testament inspired nude remains. The paint of Rubens, who was the official painter of the Church of the Counter-Reformation, is proof that the Catholic Church was not of puritanical spirit. This is a fact that was established as early as the "Renaissance", of which the Popes were among the most influential inspirers. This non-conflictual proximity of Catholicism and Humanism is a constant that is very well expressed in the painting and sculpture of a large part of Europe during three centuries. Italy, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Belgium were the main centres of this dialectical art. The Iberian Peninsula also belongs to this area but with much more reserved tendencies towards the female or male nude.
The human nude is a delicate subject, very provocative, absolutely forbidden in certain cultures and civilizations. The prohibition of the nude is very revealing of the ideologies that govern a society. Good, evil, or otherwise. These differences express different approaches to the human being according to the cultures and the religious or secular ideologies that animate them. Some cultures cast anathema against nudity, others do not.
Greco-Roman Antiquity not only did not exclude the female or male nude, but it made the nude one of its dominant aesthetic and ethical features. The beauty of the human body was considered to reflect the harmony of the world. This is a peculiarity in the history of civilizations.
Ancient Egypt was a socially and politically very feminist society. The naked woman or man are not at all absent from her painting and sculpture, but they are represented in such a way as to avoid any erotic approach. This is absolutely not the case in Greek art.
What it is possible to see of Sumerian and Mesopotamian art, Semitic, almost completely excludes nudity.
Hinduism is an exceptional civilization in the sense that for millennia, despite the Islamic censorship that was exercised on this subcontinent for centuries, India was going to represent the human nude, feminine, masculine, even erotic, without plunging into the abyss of a vulgar and obsessive materialism like the one we are witnessing in our present West.
These are facts, which are very topical subjects of reflection. Nudity and sexuality may be a non taboo, a non ban. Nudity and sexuality may be a non obsession or a non commodity. Between the healthy, natural, instinctive, interested nude and the vulgar, obsessed, scatological one, there is a great difference.
Rubens represents in Europe a moment of balance between a re-conquering but liberal Catholicism, not at all puritanical, and a Humanism, not necessarily amoral nor obsessed with sexuality, inspired by ancient paganism. A balance that lasted for about three centuries in a large part of Europe and of which Rubens was one of the most talented interpreters.
