Teenager Arrested Over Mass School Bomb Hoax


After a huge bomb hoax shut down hundreds of colleges and schools across the UK, the teen believed to be in the middle of an Minecraft gamers' feud was detained.

Hertfordshire police detained the 19-year-old following 24,000 threatening emails sent to schools were sent out warning of a bomb threat and soliciting money.

The emails were faked to look as if they had been sent by a gaming network known as VeltPvP. VeltPvP, an online Minecraft player-versus-player server is the same service that companies use to sell their products to gamers.

A teenager believed to be at the centre of a Minecraft gamers' dispute was arrested following an explosion that shut down hundreds of schools across the UK. The 19-year-old was detained by Hertfordshire police after 24,000 emails were sent to schools warning them of an imminent attack

The emails were intended to cause the domain to be suspended for abuse . They are believed to be from an organisation that was trying to undermine VeltPvP.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) said there was 'no credible threat to the emails' received this week.

They said in a statement: 'We understand teachers' and parents concern, but stress that there was no threat of serious consequence to the emails schools received.

The dispute was based on the belief that rivals had engaged in illegal activities to stop each other from conducting business.

The blame is being placed on VeltPvP the hoaxer claimed VeltPvP was involved in a campaign of Direct Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks - which he alleges were used to block other competitors' Minecraft servers.

Following the fake bomb email threat, parents were asked to bring their children home.

In a statement, VeltPvP said: 'We've been harassed by cybercriminals who are trying to harass us in every way they can.

"We are deeply sorry for anyone who was affected by this, but we just want to inform you that this is not real."

More than 400 colleges and schools across the nation received the email that claimed the bomb was planted and would be detonated if cash wasn't handed over.

Cardinal Road School in Feltham west of London was one of the schools who received the hoax email.

Police forces from London, Bristol, Liverpool, Bedfordshire and the the North East were among those investigating.

Some parents requested to be allowed to pick up their children from school due concerns over the emails.

Six schools across Hertfordshire were also affected: Abbots Hill in Hemel Hempstead, Valley School in Stevenage, The Sele School in Hertford, Duncombe School in Hertford, Stanborough School in Watford and St Albans High School.
