I'm always a bit wary of these "collaborative" type albums - seems they often miss the mark, showcasing musicianship at the expense of quality songs. The Metal Allegiance album was kind of like this - great drums and guitars, lots of guest vocals, but the songs were not the most memorable. I was very surprised by Teenage Time Killers - definitely superseded my expectations! Reed Mullin has always been a favorite drummer of mine - his work on "Blind" is one of the best thrash/heavy metal performances of all time - so had to check out what he had to offer. I wasn't familiar with Mick Murphy on guitar, but need to check out his stuff, as this album is full of awesome riffs and great tone. Oh, and by the way, Dave Grohl plays BASS of all things on 11 tracks - is there anything he doesn't do? The songs fall in line with the genre of the singer - the Neil Fallon song sounds like something off of "Transnational Speedway", the Randy Blythe song is more thrashy like Lamb of God, the Tommy Victor song sounds like Prong, etc. And Pete Stahl shows up on the song "Plank Walk" - holy crap- PETE STAHL!! From Wool! I love Wool, but honestly had forgotten about this band - this song sounds kinda like Wool!! Wow! Yeah, I got excited by that. Sorry. The songs vary between thrash, hardcore, punk - really getting at the crossover sound of C.O.C.'s first few albums, but with a more cleaned up sound. Everything is good, but "Clawhoof" is one of the best songs - heavy, thrashy, great vocals by Tairrie B Murphy - the wife of Mick Murphy and singer for My Ruin. Need to check them out. Unlike Metal Allegiance, the songs are very short - most around 2 minutes, so if something isn't to your taste, it's over quickly. This album covers a lot of ground, so if you like these genres, you will like something on Greatest Hits Volume 1. If you are buying this simply because of Dave Grohl, you may be disappointed - it's not like Nirvana or Foo Fighters and he doesn't sing on any of the songs. He does have writing credits on the songs he plays on, so if you like his Probot album, you understand that he is the ultimate musical chameleon - he can write any style and make it sound legit. In summary, this is good, heavy music, lots of variety, great musicianship and vocals and I am hoping a Greatest Hits Volume 2 happens!
David Grohl's new side project is another home run. Much like
Probot
where Dave plays with all the metal singers that influenced him as kid, on this record he plays with all the punk artists that influenced him. On this album he plays bass on the songs rather drums like normal. If you like classic punk and you like Dave Grohl than you will like this album. The other thing that I can say is that the Probot was very limited release and I have a feeling that this album will be the same, so get it while you can.
Great cd to listen to ,, really loved listening to 'Exploder with London May on drums & Reed mullin on vocals and then "Big Money and I really like the "Barrio' and I like the drums on"crowned by the Light of the sun & The dead hand - corey Taylor sounds kewl in song 'Egobomb & I really like Days of Degradation, Alot of great musicians on this cd <3 Teenage time killer... added bonus mini fold out poster- awesome**
Pretty good compilation of songs. Most of the songs are really good and there is not much filler. Other than the terrible... and I mean terrible "Ode to Sean Hannity" song, I do not skip any songs when I play the album.
Rockin stuff from Dave G and friends. Metal, punk, high energy noize, whatever you wanna call it, it's fun and what you'd expect. Are ALL the songs excellent? No, but who cares, most are and i found it entertaining and worth the cost. BAM! You're pregnant! I've seen it a thousand times....
I don't know if you would call this a punk metal? This album opens a door to something new...I like it! Dave is on to something that could ...redefine music again...in my opinion.
Awesome collaboration! I can't wait to see who they get for Vol.2 assuming there is a Vol.2 somewhere down the line.

Probably the most 'punk' album released this century NOT from the underground!
This album was built as a 'punk' inspired cooperation by many fans of the genre, and a quick look of the names involved, largely back up those claims, however, it's more of a hardcore who's who, with a very strong and disctinctly metal edge. What's great about this album, and other projects similar to this, is a sense of oneupmanship in the group, you really feel, they're all trying to outdo each other, whilst giving their own take on the formula! Another plus is hearing some that have become slightly estranged from the genre revisit their roots e.g. Neil Fallon of Clutch on 'Crowned by the Light of the Sun,' established names doing something pretty new or unheard of for them such as Randy Blythe on 'Hung Out to Dry,' or doing what they do but for a different band / pace : Jello Biafra. As I've already established, this is a kind of hardcore/metal hybrid album, and it with quite a bit of irony that perhaps the best track feature someone on the more 'willowy' side of punk/hardcore spectrum, 'Barrio' featuring Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio (cough...Blink 182)! Out of the many, short, sharp 20 tracks (rarely troubling the 3 minute mark) I would say at least 15 are great tracks. Indeed, the only track that really stands out as dull or by the numbers is 'Your Empty Soul' it's not terrible, but it just dragged to my ears! Full of nice surprises and great songs. Probably the most 'punk' album released this century NOT from the underground!
This album is so much fun. It's like the other album from Dave Grohl, released a couple of years ago called 'Probot', but I think this is better. So if you're into that sort of thing...

Great blast of old school punk/hardcore with diversions into metal and sludge

BELLA VARIANT

The long-gestating brainchild of Corrosion Of Conformity founder/drummer/vocalist Reed Mullin, guitarist Mick Murphy (My Ruin, The Birds of Satan, Neanderthal) and producer John “Lou” Lousteau, Teenage Time Killers’ Greatest Hits Vol. 1 is 20 concise seismic shocks created by an all-star line up of punk and metal legends spanning decades. Joining Reed on drums and Mick on guitar on the album’s 20 mostly original tracks and few covers of underground classics (including the Rudimentary Peni deep cut that inspired the project’s title) includes: Jello Biafra, Randy Blythe of Lamb of God, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear of Foo Fighters, Nick Oliveri, Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio, Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour, Tommy Victor of Prong and Danzig, Lee Ving of Fear, Mike “IX” Williams of Eyehategod, Mullin’s Corrosion of Conformity band mates Mike Dean and Woody Weatherman, Karl Agell and many, many more. All instrumental tracks on Teenage Time Killers’ Greatest Hits Vol. 1 were recorded at Grohl’s 606 Studios in Northridge, CA. The album was produced by John "Lou" Lousteau, Reed Mullin and Mick Murphy, engineered and mixed by John "Lou" Lousteau at 606.

“It was like hardcore karaoke with a bass,” the ever-affable Dave Grohl says of recording with the all-star punk and metal project Teenage Time Killers. “I just sat there, ripping to my favorite drummer [ Corrosion of Conformity ’s] Reed Mullin and my favorite vocalists — Randy [Blythe] from Lamb of God , and fucking Neil Fallon, the singer of Clutch , and Pete [Stahl], the singer of Scream.”
Along with Grohl’s appearance, Teenage Time Killers’ debut features 29 other guest shots by some of heavy music’s biggest names. The record, cheekily titled Greatest Hits Vol. 1 and due out this week, sports a collage of current and former members of Fear, the Germs , Slipknot , Dead Kennedys , Minor Threat , Bad Religion, Alkaline Trio , Prong and many others who play a mix of catchy punk rock and electrifying gutter metal. The sheer talent on the record (see the full track list here ) makes it one of the most exciting punk projects in years, but Greatest Hits’ most notable feature is its effortless feel. Despite the mix-and-match cast, nothing here sounds forced.
“To me, it’s a mixture of Dave Grohl’s Probot project and the seminal fucking punk-rock comp Let Them Eat Jellybeans ,” says Mullin, a member of the triumvirate that led the group, referencing a 1981 compilation that featured Dead Kennedys , Flipper and Subhumans. “I don’t know what I’d call Teenage Time Killers, but I do know it’s a supergroup of fucking badass musicians and singers.” By Mullin’s own estimation, the whole thing wouldn’t have happened without Grohl’s generosity and loyalty.
The roots of the project stretch back 30 years. In the early Eighties, Mullin and his Raleigh, North Carolina–based bandmates began making regular trips to Washington, D.C. to check out the city’s booming hardcore scene, led by groups such as Bad Brains, Void, Scream, Minor Threat.
