It's hard to imagine the lifetime of talent and skill that goes into the art of an animated cartoon. "The MLaaTR Sketchbook" from the artists behind "My Life as a Teenage Robot" gives a glimpse into the work of four dozen of the world's best. "If an animated cartoon is well executed it may give the viewer the impression he is watching a cartoon actor handling individual props and performing on an imaginative set. In reality, of course, the character, props, and set are actually thousands of separate images recreated repeatedly by dozens of different artists across two continents. A key goal of an animation designer is to create an image strong enough to survive its long journey of reinterpretation with its style and personality intact. These pages contain a very small sampling of the images designed by our artists to be both functional and inspiring. These original pencil sketches reveal the artists’ thought processes and exhibit raw personality that can never be completely duplicated." –Alex Kirwan, 'Teenage Robot' art director This second edition sketchbook from Frederator Books includes larger and clear images and a new cover.

This book is great to own if you’re a fan of MLAATR. I like that it contains a variety of different sketches - characters, backgrounds, props etc. The price and shipping were good. I like that there is a foreword and introduction as well as a list of artists who worked on the show. It would’ve been better if it contained some commentary or other information on the specific drawings in the book, but this book is still pretty good as it is. This is definitely better quality than the Butch Hartman sketchbook.

Great for fans!

It’s literally what it says on the tin, an awesome collection of scketchs and line art from the show as if you got it straight from the artists as they were giving them to the story boarder and the animators. Honestly the only complaints I have are that it’s not bigger and there aren’t any designers notes or alternate concept art. Also it only covers Season 1 & 2. But other than that it’s a perfect new addition to anyone’s collection.

This is an alright book, I suppose. I wish there was a little more to it though. There are practically zero sketches of Jenny Wakeman (the main character) in this, which was a little disappointing, but plenty of supporting characters get their own page. This book does have nice sketches, the images are mostly of props in the show and background imagery. The book is fine for what it is, but I was really hoping for some commentary for the imagery, rather than an almost entirely text-less book. I guess they thought the images would speak for themselves. Overall, I don't think this book is enough to satisfy, at least not for myself. I definitely would've paid a lot more money for the book I really wanted. This show is amazing and it deserves more IMO. I can't say I would get this again, it is nice to support the show in some way, even if it is long gone. If not that, its great to get MLAATR merch and show love for the show.

I've been hunting for this book since my first year of animation, really happy it's finally back out! The book itself has a bit of everything, from character turnarounds, layouts, and minor sequences and notes from the show, I think one of my favourite additions is the different outfits for all the characters. It's not the most consistent art book but It's still definitely worth it for artists and fans of the show!

It doesn't feel like the best quality Paper and the book just kind of abruptly ends, but it's a very nice look at production art. A must for a MLaaTR fan.

I enjoy seeing the process behind the series, but the faded b/w reproductions look like they were printed on an HP inkjet. Most of the artwork can already be found circulating on the web. You could probably download high-res images off the web and print them yourself to get better image quality. The scans have all been converted to b/w; even though these drawings were most likely blue and black line drawings like the cover. The book really should cost $5.

I'd give 5 stars if the book didn't come bent and ripped. Amazon has been ruining any book that is soft covered. The rip doesn't officially stop until about page 45. The contents of the book are pretty nice. However, do know that these are just sketches and there's no text explaining concepts. As the title says, the book is a sketchbook and not an art book. Which is still fine.

This book has to be one of the best impulse purchases I’ve ever made! I didn’t even realize some of my favorite artists were involved in this show until I got this. The art style is so awesome!

Fabulous art and a style I could look at forever

Great art. All the pages are scans of real paper drawings and sketches, including all the sketch lines and smudges that go with that. I love it! It's really impressive.

My Life as a Teenage Robot: Rebooted
The most artistic occupation, for sure. This assignment entails original, creative designing and coloring. However, each and every look MUST pertain the "Art Deco" art style. No overly complicated or overly simple looks. Designs should be a happy balance between the two, and somewhat mathematical in structure (streamline, consistent, and somewhat angular). For a final bit of info, the original show's designs were greatly inspired by 1930-1950 style furniture, buildings, machinery, etc. We will also be studying these aspects for inspiration.
1. Intense study of the "Art Deco" style. You must have a clear understanding where the boundaries in complexities lie and how the series handles the look. We recommend you start your research here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ 84568447@N00 /sets/72157602498227583/
2. Knowledge of how to duplicate and build upon said style, forming new and creative looks for sets and characters.
3. A computer photo-editing program powerful enough to convey fake textures and effects, like Photoshop or GIMP (GIMP is free, by the way, but slightly less powerful). However, if you wish to go "old fashion style" and literally paint your own backgrounds and scan them in, that's greatly appreciated as well. http://www.gimp.org/ --(Background Designer only)
1. Draw 3 characters and/or background designs in the Art Deco style, presenting that you can at least learn to draw the style (it doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a way of proving that, with practice, you can recreate the style).
NOTE: Auditions do NOT have to be in color, but if you want to give it a go, feel free to. ;)
2. Scan the images into the computer or take an HD photo of them (you have to be able to see the images, basically).
3. Send audition file via email after the application form's completion: mlaatr.reboot@gmail.com
