Beautiful Nike (not her real name), a 25-year-old petite nurse tells the story of how she was sexually abused at the age of 12. Looking disturbed, Nike was a bit uncomfortable when she began her story but after a few hours, she felt the urge to open up as she gave a lot of details.
“I was raped by our gateman at the age of 12. Looking back now, he must have been 40-years-old. Initially, he was only touching my breast which was only just developing before graduating to the part where he inserts his fingers in my private part.”
Nike added she was always nervous and scared whenever he touches her that way and at the end of it he strongly warns her not to divulge such a nightmare to anyone.
“I couldn’t tell my parents, I was always scared. The day he raped me, I couldn’t stop crying but still had the fear that if I ever told anyone, he will not be happy. This went on repeatedly for a while until he was replaced.”
Nike revealed that she became an introvert because she feels anyone looking at her will immediately know what she had done.
“I was always in my room, my parents could not understand how a child who was always running around the house now prefers to be locked in the room. Then, whenever I see him, I would shiver.
“I had nightmares for a very long time. Now that I am an adult, I still remember the events like it happened yesterday. I was disturbed until I build up the courage to speak with a counsellor.”
Just like Nike, there are several other women who have either been raped or gone through any form of sexual abuse.
Narrating her ordeal, a light-skinned, elegant looking in complement of her height, Jola, narrated the trauma she experienced when she was raped severally by her uncle as an eight years old girl.
She stated: “The first time he molested me, I was confused because I didn’t know what he was doing to me. All I knew was I felt pains when he was doing these things to me. When he was done, he cleans me up, wipes my face and tells me that if I don’t want to get killed, I must never disclose what happened between us.
“I hated my mum so much then because I felt she was blind to see what this man was doing to me. Looking back now, I realised it was not actually her fault because how could she have noticed anything.
“I never told anyone about this until I became an adult. My parents and siblings don’t know this till date because I have always felt they won’t believe me. The uncle is old now and whenever I see him at a family function, my heart is full of wrath and hatred for him.”
Another 23-year-old victim, Nneka, shared the story of how she was first raped at 10 by a distant relative.
“Whenever we were alone, he would tease me of how grown I have become, how big my breast was and how different boys must be chasing me now. Initially, I thought he was only playing with me until the day he asked me to sit on his laps. Whenever we were alone, he will caress my body focusing majorly on my breast and my laps and he made me really uncomfortable,” she explained.
She said he finally raped her when there was nobody in the house. This was some months after he first touched her.
“I was in a lot of pain after he raped me. Talking to you now, I can still feel the pain and this occurs whenever I talk about it. It was not a one-time thing, this man abused me for almost five years. I couldn't tell my parents then because we don’t really have a close relationship and I felt I was going to disappoint them.”
Nike explained that the abuse she faced as a teenager has left her with a great emotional trauma despite the fact that she is currently undergoing counselling.
“I find it very difficult to relate to the opposite sex after my experience. The abuse battered me and whenever I remember those moments I still shiver. I lost interest in men as I only got involved with them during my service year. My fiance was worried at a point because I was not free with him, he understood when I disclosed my experience to him.”
She further mentioned that she might not be able to enjoy sex ever again.
“How am I suppose to enjoy it without thinking of when I was abused?” she said.
On her part, Jola said she became withdrawn to everyone around her.
She added, “After I was raped severally by my uncle, I fell into depression, I began to withdraw from my family. I had a very weird dream during that period and I didn’t get over my fears until I went to see a psychologist and was counselled.
Jola advised parents to always look to for their children whenever they notice their children are suddenly withdrawn.
“If only my mum noticed that a once playful and jovial child suddenly became withdrawn, maybe she would have known. I remember whenever this uncle visits us I became very scared and fear to be left alone with him,” she said.
Nneka said she became sexually active after she was raped severally and became attracted to the opposite sex.
“The abuse from my distant relative left a scar, I realised I began to enjoy it and always wanted to be touched. At first, I didn’t understand this feeling but later I did. I kept these feeling to myself for a very long time until I was fortunate to meet a great woman who told me I can speak up and get treatment,” she said.
On whether she still keeps in touch with her abuser, she said: “I haven’t seen him since then, the last I heard about him is that he is married and lives abroad. The trauma still remains with me but I have been able to manage it than before.”
One will notice that none of the above victims mentioned their experiences to their parents. Jola was asked why she still hasn’t told her parents and her response was “they might not believe me.”
“I still can’t tell them because I don’t think they will ever believe me. Also, I don’t want to be stigmatized. This man is my uncle, I am sure my parents will confront him and if they do, the whole family will soon know about it,” she said.
Six out of 10 children are abused in Nigeria — UNICEF
According to UNICEF, six out of 10 children in Nigeria experience emotional, physical or sexual abuse before age 18, with half experiencing physical violence. Of the children who reported violence, fewer than five out of a 100 received any form of support.
Studies conducted in Nigeria disclose that young girls are victims in the majority of reported assault cases in hospitals. A four-year review of sexual assault cases at LASUTH that began in 2008 and ended in December 2012, showed that out of a total 287 reported cases of sexual assault, 83% of the victims were below the age of 19.
A one-year survey conducted at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital between 2012 and 2013 revealed that 70% of sexual assault victims were under the age of 18. In the Enugu survey, majority of the victims knew their perpetrators and the assault occurred inside uncompleted buildings and the victims or perpetrators residence.
Most child sexual abuse is by men. About 30 per cent are the child’s relatives — brothers, fathers, uncles or cousins — about 60 per cent are other acquaintances such as ‘friends’ of the family, babysitters, or neighbours; strangers are offenders in about 10 per cent of child sexual abuse cases, the studies revealed.
UNICEF reported that there was an increase in reported incidents of sexual violence in the northeast, with 997 cases reported in 2017, compared with 644 in 2016. Those cases included rape, sexual slavery and forced marriage by Boko Haram insurgents.
