The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise will reportedly be seeing a new and original addition to its video game line-up, according to Paramount.
A brand-new AAA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is reported to be coming in 2023.
Per GameRant , Paramount's plans for the new entry were revealed on page 170 of the September 2022 issue of Toy World magazine. The section titled 'Products and Experiences' focuses on Paramount's most successful franchises of the year, including a large Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles focus. The series has already seen a busy 2022 with the release of a retro-themed video game, Shredders Revenge, the reveal of the upcoming Seth Rogan movie, Mutant Mayhem , and plans to launch a new range of action figures and a re-master of Konami's The Cowabunga Collection at the end of the year.
Toy World does not mention details about the game itself other than being a "brand-new original Triple-A game." The era, style and genre are unknown, as well as which platforms it will be available to play on. However, there is speculation within the TMNT community that the new game may tie into Seth Rogan's take on the Ninja Turtles as they are to be released in the same year.
Japanese company Konami developed the first video game in the TMNT franchise. It was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989 but was later ported to home computers and eventually the Virtual Console on the Wii. It sold approximately four million copies, making it one of the bestselling NES games of all time.
Tribute Games' newest addition to the franchise's video game line-up, Shredders Revenge , sold over 1 million copies in its first week of release. The game features online co-op for up to six players and a nostalgic pixel-based art style. The beat 'em up is available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began as a comic book series but quickly expanded into action figures, movies and multiple animated series. The team of crime-fighting reptiles consists of four brothers named after Italian renaissance artists: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael. Each turtle has their own unique weapon, personality and color. The anthropomorphic turtles are trained in ninjutsu and fight crime in New York City under the guidance of their patient rat sensei Splinter. Both the turtles and their sensei have the same archenemy, known as Shredder. Nickelodeon and Paramount took over ownership of the TMNT franchise from Mirage Studios in 2009.
