First dates. Uh oh, right? All the nerves and questions start in. How do I make a good first impression? Do I talk about my favorite TV show hoping it doesn’t come across as silly? Sometimes you want to curl up in a ball and cringe when you think of first dates. But other times, you constantly relive the best ones that you’ve had in your head. Everyone hears about first date horror stories, but some of the best first dates go unnoticed. It’s time to talk about the positive first dates because, believe it or not, they exist too.
Not everyone shows up to a date and leaves in disgust, even though that’s the connotation that comes with first dates. It’s hard to pinpoint what exactly qualifies as a great first date since each person has a different expectation and preference of the style for a first date. So what makes a first date the best first date? Is it the food, the view, your date, or all of the above? I talked to 25 high school and college students about their best first date, what it entailed and why it was so memorable. Get out your rom coms and tissues, because some of these are adorable.
“My boyfriend and I were best friends for years and then eventually started dating, but we realized we never went on an actual first date. So my senior year of high school, he rented us a canoe and bought us a picnic and we spent that day canoeing around the Delaware river and it was so much fun! And then after that we went to see Finding Dory and it was all so perfect. We covered all the bases— exercise, adventure, food, movies, and love.”
“My best first date has to be my freshman year in high school when I invited my boyfriend at the time over to my house. We ordered food, watched movies, cuddled, and just talked for so long. It was so simple, yet so cute and sweet. The best thing is that that specific date became a tradition. When we hung out casually it would be to do those exact things and get food together. I love simplicity and I think that played a huge factor in why I loved it so much. Personally, I love having conversations on first dates because I like to really get to know the person before anything else happens.”
“My best first date happened when I was 19, and at the end of my 2nd semester of college. We went to the Washington, D.C. National Mall and had a picnic and walked around the monuments and ended up sitting on the back end of the Lincoln memorial talking about music, politics and history for an hour and it was just all around great!”
“I was 20 and I was a sophomore, and my first date with my current girlfriend was my best. We went out to dinner at Kome in the Promenade and it was so great because it was so peaceful and calm and this was the day that I really got to know her.”
“The best first date I have ever been on was on St. Patrick's day, my sophomore year of high school. Me and the girl I was with were walking along Main Street, a popular place filled with shops just a stones throw away from the University of Delaware Campus. We didn't do anything spectacular, we went to Panera and laughed at the drunk college kids stumbling about. It was a comfortable experience for both us to get to know each other and just spend time in each other's company.”
“We went ice skating when I was a senior in high school and I've been dating him for almost 2 years now.”
“My sophomore year of high school, I went to get ice cream with this girl. I didn’t really consider this a first date until I looked back on it, because we had two other people with us, so it had potential to be a double date. It’s not typical to consider going out with friends to be a “first date,” but I think that any place where you’re laughing and feel comfortable with someone, regardless if you two are alone, counts for a great first date. It was me, her, and two other friends just eating and having a blast, so it was really casual and enjoyable because we were all laughing and having fun.”
“My first kiss was in the 7th grade and our first date was 5 years later when we were both seniors in high school. We went ice skating and he had to hold my arms so I wouldn't fall over. And then we had our second kiss, it was perfect.”
“I had my first date with my current boyfriend in D.C. my freshman year of college when I went to visit him over winter break. We went to a restaurant on H Street called Driftwood and then he took me around the different monuments and memorials. He asked me to be his girlfriend on the drive to one of the memorials, and seeing D.C. blur past as he did it made it perfect. I visited the monuments countless times before, but something about seeing them through the eyes of someone who knew so much about them and who truly loved and had a connection with the city was amazing. We went to the Pentagon Memorial and walked through the garden dedicated to those who lost their lives during the attack on the Pentagon on 9/11. It was actually really beautiful and awe-inspiring. Afterwards, we sat by the Washington Monument and gave each other Christmas gifts, nearly froze to death, and then got pie from the literal best pie shop ever. I can honestly say I have never been so entertained on a date before.”
“Sophomore year, when I was 15, this amazing guy took me to the movies to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was late, so we had the theater to ourselves. We cracked jokes and shared our love for Harry Potter, and with all that space we had, we still sat close enough to hold hands.”
“The best first date I went on was during my freshman year of college. I went to a hockey game with one of my guy friends. The whole night was great. It wasn't boring, we laughed the whole night and he was a gentleman.”
“I met this girl freshman year of college at a party and we hit off immediately. I got her number and texted her the next day. A week later we went on our first date and we went to brunch together and hiking afterwards.”
“The best first date I've ever gone on was the summer before my junior year. The guy was an old friend who had recently shown interest and since I never thought of him in that way, I didn't know what to expect from the date. He took me to a park by his house and we sat in the middle of a big field. He brought a blanket, bug spray, a flashlight, a pizza, and all of my favorite drinks. We laid under the stars and talked for hours. It was exciting because unlike many first dates, we were completely alone and were able to have intimate conversations and really get to know one another. Neither of us touched our phones at all. We just ate, talked, and stargazed. It was such an amazing and romantic experience.”
“I was a freshman in college, 18 years old. We had been friends for a while, until he asked me to go on a date with him. We wanted to do something casual, so I thought the mall would be a good idea. When we passed by Build-a-Bear I jokingly said we should make one. Surprisingly he said sure. So we went in and chose a cute little sloth, and named him Max! It was adorable, especially when the woman making him made us do all the cute things that they make kids do. Like kiss a little heart and put it in the bear. It was so different seeing a guy with a beard making a Build-a-Bear in the mall and then walking around with it after. I never thought he would think it was a cute idea. I totally thought I had weirded him out but we're still together so I guess not!”
“I just turned 16, near the end of my sophomore year, and me and my then boyfriend were meeting up for a fundraiser dinner. We had a great time, and we got to finally be alone and just be ourselves and get to know one another better.”
“I was 15, I was a freshman in high school, it was awesome cause it made me feel like a woman. Kinda like getting your period for the first time, but more pleasant. It was at a restaurant called Cheeburger on Main Street in Delaware. He payed for me and I was super happy.”
“I was 17 in my junior year of high school. I went to a burrito place called El Diablo. It was really amazing just to talk and get to know her for like a solid hour.”
“My first date with my current girlfriend happened this past summer. It was nighttime and she called me to tell me to get ready because she was on her way to pick me up. It had to have been at least 10 p.m. but I got ready. She pulled up in front of my house and drove me to get milkshakes at our favorite spot. I thought that's all that was going to happen, but after we grabbed our milkshakes she started driving in a way that I didn't really recognize. She drove me out of the city and into the countryside, parked her car and lowered the roof of her convertible. She told me to look up. As I looked up, I saw the most beautiful, star-filled sky I had ever seen. I had told her the first day we met that I loved looking at the stars, but I couldn't see them well from where I was living and how much I missed that view. She brought me to the stars. We sat there with our strawberry milkshakes and just stared at the stars together. It was so nice to just be there under such a stunning view with the most beautiful girl. We had the best conversations and it was such a simple date but so meaningful to me.”
I went on a date to the Philly Art Museum when I was a senior in high school. It was great because I took AP Art History so I was able to make connections in the pieces I saw and explain it to who I was with.
“The best first date I’ve ever been on was when I was 14 and I was in the 8th grade. It was my very first time asking a girl out and I tried to plan the most perfect date. We went to Friendly’s and a movie and the movie part sucked because you can’t really get to know someone while watching a movie! But dinner was great because the conversation was non stop and we both kept each other’s interest.”
“Last year as a sophomore, I was 19 years old. I went on a first date to get burgers at this awesome restaurant in the West Village and then took a walk on the Hudson Pier. It was very romantic!
“It was during the summer of my senior year, so I was about to be a freshman in college. It wasn't anything extravagant, we just laid on the football field at night and talked and watched shooting stars. It was just really nice and comforting. The best part about it was that he surprised me with a bowl of mac and cheese and I almost cried. He brought me other little things, but it was the mac and cheese that got me.”
"The best first date I've ever been on was when I was in my senior year of high school. What we did wasn't uncommon: dinner and a movie. It was the details that made it great. I've been a big fan of the New England Patriots since I was in kindergarten. Needless to say, they're kind of a big deal for me. Normally, people will tell you to go to a movie first before having dinner so that you have something to talk about. Well, my date did the opposite. I was kind of freaking out because I had no idea what to talk about. When he took me out to dinner, he chose one of my favorite restaurants. Also, the Patriots were playing, coincidentally against my date's favorite team. This was not an awkward dinner where we sat down staring at our food trying to find something to talk about. We had a ton of fun watching the game and playfully bashing each other's team while getting to know each other. The movie was great. I honestly didn't pay much attention because I was still excited from dinner and couldn't wait until it was over so that we could go talk some more.”
“We walked to Dunkin Donuts and shared munchkins and both got coffees. I was 16 years old and a junior in high school. It was great because we both stayed off of our phones and had non-stop conversation. Since we were sitting outside only over coffee, there was no pressure for either of us to stayed or impress each other besides by just being ourselves.”
“I was 16 and we went for a picnic at the reservoir near the University of Delaware campus. It was the most beautiful day and the two of us had the best time and nothing went wrong!”
Whether you’re snuggled up with a movie, walking around town, or just going out to dinner, first dates can be inspiring and refreshing. The best first dates vary from person to person and are different for everyone. Maybe your best first date was similar to one above, or maybe it hasn’t happened yet. There isn’t a recipe for the perfect first date, so think of yours, hold on to it, and go get it.

This bath organizer has more than 7K 5-star reviews from parents (yes, really)

Way back in the 90s, I was a professional teenage babysitter. I remember that I couldn’t wait until I turned 13 so that I could start making my own money.
In retrospect, 13 seems pretty young to babysit a whole gang of children. I vividly remember babysitting a child as young as two when I was a 13-year-old that couldn’t drive. While I’m sure that the toddler’s parents got a steal of a deal since I only charged $4 an hour, I don’t think I would ever put my kids in the care of a 13-year-old today.
But alas, my 13-year-old self babysat all the time. I loved babysitting. I couldn’t get enough of it. It was the only time that I felt like a grownup with a house to myself, without parents or siblings breathing down my neck. I remember I would beg to babysit with my friends because it felt like a special night out. If parents let me and my best friend Jennifer babysat together, we would only charge one hourly rate of $4, meaning that we both made $2 an hour just to hang out together. It was so worth it.
Teen babysitters mean well, but they’re still pretty naïve. Here are some of the most RIDIC things I did as a teenage babysitter that make me cringe today:
1. Ate Everything I Could Find In The Cabinets.
When parents said, “Help yourself,” they meant it, right?
Macaroni and cheese and microwave dinners exclusively.
I am ashamed to admit that I did this, but I was CURIOUS. Can you blame me?
4. Watched Bad TV Shows In Front Of The Kids.
After watching an episode of Friends , one four-year-old girl said to me, “What is a bitch?” FAIL.
5. Counted The Hours Until The Kids Went To Bed.
The joy of my babysitting experience happened when the kids went to bed, and I was allowed to watch TV all by myself and control the remote.
I did fuck with thermostats a lot because I was never allowed to use the thermostat at my own house. Sweet, sweet freedom.
This is a complex story that is hard to explain, so don’t judge me, all right? The short version is that I was babysitting two hellions over the summer because they couldn’t be trusted to be left alone. I thought they were out riding bikes all day, and I was relieved. Turns out they were locked in a closet crying all day long, and I couldn’t hear them because I was watching TV so loud. Bad babysitter.

I was about five years old when I first touched a penis. I didn't want to, but I did. He was a family member in his teens. We were watching television at my grandmother's house when he motioned for me to come sit on his lap. Slowly, he moved his hands up my skirt and touched my vulva. Then he moved my hand towards his crotch and had me feel him up. I didn't want to, but I did.
I was about 10 years old when I first saw a penis. I didn't want to, but I did. He was a random man on the street. I was on my way to buy bread at the local Spar. I had just turned the corner from our street when a man sat down on the ramp leading up to the building on my left. His sudden movement caught my attention so I looked in his direction and there it was, his penis peeking through the shorts he was wearing, against his thigh. I thought it was a mistake but then the same man, a number of times after that, did the same thing. I recognised him after that and so each time I saw him, I crossed the street. I didn't want to see it, but I did.
When I was 13, I was sitting in my Grade 7 English class when one of the boys whispered my name. When I turned around there it was, his penis in his hands. I was shocked and turned around without a word. We were sitting right at the back of the class so the teacher had no idea what was going on. Some of the other kids giggled -- boys and girls. I was embarrassed. He then said: "I showed you mine, now you show me yours." I didn't, but no matter what I did, I could not unsee his.
When I was 25 I was at a party with my friends. We had been drinking and celebrating a birthday. At some point I got tired but there was no space on the couch. I decided to put my legs on the laps of everyone on the couch while the rest of my body leaned onto an ottoman next to it. There was a blanket over my legs. Suddenly, I felt a hand reach over and touch my crotch. I froze for a few seconds, shocked and unsure of what was happening to me. I then moved the man's hand from my crotch hoping that he would stop. The more I pushed his hand away the more he pushed back, now trying to unbutton my jeans. I moved, put two ottomans together and uncomfortably lay on them until I could fall asleep. As soon as the sun came up, I drove home with my best friend. I didn't want that man to touch me, but he did.
Every single one of the men in the above scenarios committed a crime. It is a crime to expose yourself to someone without their consent. It is a crime to force someone to touch your genitals. It is a crime to touch someone's genitals without con
