Alternative or casual, mainstream or urban: teenage fashion tribes explain what their clothes mean to them
Who do you think has great style? Rihanna , grime artist Paigey-Cakey .
Where do you shop? New Look, Primark and JD.
What’s the most important part of your look? Trainers.
Chante: “You can’t wear no bait brands, though – people will call you out. You can’t wear no Tesco trainers.”
How much would you spend on a pair of trainers? £100.
What would you never wear? Anything flowery.
How would you describe your look? Urban, or in-trend.
How would you describe your style? Androgynous/alternative. We like to change eras: we’re doing 80s now.
Where do you shop? Charity shops. Georgia: “This top’s from Cancer Research down the road.”
What would you never wear? Genevieve: “Anything that makes me look like I’m playing tennis or golf.”
Esther: “They say we look gay. Not many dress like us round here.”
Genevieve: “People have thrown a bottle at me before.”
Jake: “Adidas, New Balance, Nike .”
What do you spend the most money on?
Where are your camouflage trousers from?
Kai: “Carharrt. I spent £60 on these, and I’ve worn them every day since. Usually I spend about 99p.”
Jake: “Dunno. Don’t look at anyone.”
What music do you listen to? Psychedelia , Led Zeppelin .
Darcy: “I’ve been described as a psychedelic acid grandma.”
Shereen: “I like Urban Outfitters and the brand Lazy Oaf .”
Darcy: “Thrift shops and charity shops. I probably wouldn’t spend more than £15. I got this scarf for £2.”
Darcy: “Skinny jeans with ripped knees.”
Danielle: “We don’t want to look boring or basic. What’s basic? When you think you’re original, but you’re not. Being cool is all about being yourself.” Danielle: “It doesn’t matter what people think about you.”
How would you describe the way you dress?
Darrell: “ Chris Brown and Usher .”
What’s the most important part of your outfit?
Darrell: “Trainers – I’d spend up to £200 on them.”
Darrell: “JD Sports, Nike, Adidas, Armani and Ralph Lauren.”
Nicholas: “I’d never wear Converse trainers.”
Darrell: “Really? I don’t mind them. I’d never wear Lonsdale.”
How would you describe the way you dress? All: “Mainstream.”
Megan: “ Kendall Jenner , she’s really natural-looking.”
Where do you buy most of your clothes? Topshop, Urban Outfitters and Miss Selfridge. We come to London to shop.
Emily: “I’d spend £30 to £50 on something.”
Megan: “ Ed Sheeran and Rihanna , just the latest music.”
What would you never wear? Chinos, flared jeans and Crocs .
Imogen: “I don’t like Aztec print.”

Learn English with the British Council and you’ll be learning with the world’s English experts.
Our blogs were written by young people from the UK. Each year we selected a new group of bloggers, from the British Council’s language assistants, who shared their experiences of learning languages and living abroad. The views and opinions expressed in the articles are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of the LearnEnglish Teens team.
Please note that this project ended in 2018 so some of the blog posts are no longer up to date.
Her legs are longer, her smile is brighter and even her teeth are whiter.
It’s funny nowadays. Everybody buys their clothes. It’s not ‘cool’ to knit or sew your own any more and crafts like this are seen as a very old skill.
I wouldn’t describe myself as fashion-obsessed and I don’t usually spend a great deal of money on clothes. However, I do love a bargain and I’m terrible at throwing away old clothes.
Thrift shops are thriving with endless options from flawless fashion items to vintage finds and individual souvenirs.
Almost instantly after Christmas is over, the hype for sales begins. Ready, set, go?
These days, it seems like everything is going digital. From news articles and recipes to yoga tutorials, you can find almost everything on the internet.
At this time of year, summer seems like a distant memory. July and August were filled with boiling hot days, and even September was lovely and sunny.
On average, we only regularly wear a third of the clothes that we own.
There's a current fashion trend for pinafores and dungaree dresses going on at the moment. Walking around the shops I've seen them everywhere in all sorts of styles and colours.
Some of my friends and I have just returned from a weekend in Paris.
So anyone who knows me knows that I don’t particularly follow fashion trends. I’m perfectly content in jeans and an old hoodie, paired with a pair of classic Converse.
During the summer holidays when I was getting ready to move to France, I was very excited as it meant that I had the opportunity to buy some new clothes and change my fashion a bit.
More often than not we wander into a shop, have a browse, find something we like and buy it - all without a second thought to the environmental implications of our purchase.
The production of garments using real fur has always been a controversial issue. Recently, real fur has returned to the catwalks and collections of many fashion houses.
Buying clothes second-hand comes with lots of benefits, but also some downsides. However, among the student population of Britain, it is one of the most popular ways of staying stylish.
Having spent the last few years of my life in a renowned student city, I have constantly been surrounded by alternative styles and fashions.
Ten years ago, the term ‘blogger’ would only have been known by the select few. Nowadays, however, it is considered a full-time job in many cases.
You’ve surely heard of Converse shoes, the American brand of basketball trainers. I have fallen in love with their Italian equivalent, a kind of trainer called Superga.
Recently in the United Kingdom a new fad has been growing ever more popular – ‘the Wellington boot’. We also use the names ‘welly boot’ and ‘wellies’ for short.
After the holiday period the beginning of the New Year can seem to get off to a slow and somewhat lethargic start.
