This device is unique, it's as portable as it gets, it has cool features and is a lot of fun. So why only three stars? Well, the main reason is it's a poorly designed and manufactured device with serious flaws. So here's the deal: 1. They are made with a fiberglass resin frame of some sort, that over time WILL warp. If yours isn't warped yet, it's likely just a matter of time and there is no stopping or reversing it. Many people refer to it as a banana (picture of mine included and it will get worse). TEs official stance seems to be that a certain amount of bending is normal and expected... but it's bad enough that you may not even be able to insert modules, that your back panel is loose and has cracks and gaps, and in other cases may create hair line cracks around buttons, pop the encoder wheels or make the pitch bend almost impossible to press with any amount of force. Likely whatever you order from Amazon has been sitting for a few years already, and yours will probably be bent. 2. This is only the second device I've ever owned (EVER) that completely screwed up the battery discharging circuitry. Essentially, if modern batteries fully discharge (without a control circuit preventing it from getting too low), then the device doesn't even have enough power to engage the charging logic boards and it will refuse to charge. Most devices intentionally stop the battery getting this low so it can be avoided... however TE, in the OP-Zs case, did not. If your device has been sitting for a good while, either in your possession or in an Amazon warehouse, then chances are it has happened already. You may find it unresponsive, unable to be turned on, unable to charge and/or DOA. There are steps to follow to resolve this to some extent (remove battery and USB power it back to life), but it's not good for the battery (or fire safety) for this to happen and you may never get full capacity again. 3. The "double tap" issue. I've owned 4 of these devices now, and every single one has random issues with double pressing of buttons or keys. It's basically a quirk of the device that you can read about anywhere and everywhere. It seems somewhat random, making it feel like maybe it's a software issue, but it isn't. I've no idea why such poor switches or contacts are used in these devices... but it's pretty annoying to have recordings or work messed up by sloppy button contacts. Some are worse than others, but eventually you'll face this issue and you'll understand. 4. TE support is awful, inconsistent and they don't seem to care about any of these issues. Some people can get replacement parts, others get told tough luck, others get referred to a 3rd party repair company, some have to try to get parts from iFixit. Do yourself a favor, and pay for a warranty on this device. I wouldn't normally ever suggest it, but this one is one to just suck it up for. 5. The devices are wildly inconsistent depending on firmware and age. There are 4 known different arrangements of iconography (so the manuals probably don't match your device), depending on the firmware your volume might be too quiet or too loud and you'll need to get into the secret menus to resolve that. Which honestly, you might want to do anyway for the back lighting options. It's mostly worked out now, but you might wonder where the heck the star button is, or a punching man - and you probably just have a different version with different icons. On one run of devices, the numbered buttons even start at zero instead of one. Just madness for this sort of device without any MK or revision numbers. 6. The price. You do get a lot of fun, there is no doubt about that and you are getting an amazing form factor. I won't go as far as saying this is a hipster toy like many people might, but compare it for a moment against other gear you could get at the same price or less and it does seem out of place. You might consider a Circuit Rhythm/Tracks, an M8, a Roland MC-101 or a Korg mini kaossilator if you want battery powered... and if you are sitting at a desk, wow, so many options at this price point. It's a great way to make concepts on the go, on a train/plane etc, but when you consider the design and manufacturing issues... it's just tough for me to recommend to anyone - even though I do love it personally. If you know what you are getting into, and you've read all this and don't mind the known issues, go for it! I just wouldn't want anyone going into it without knowing the deal.

I love this device, I do, but...

By Trev Or on March 25, 2022

This is a fantastic marvel of modern technology! It truly is amazing and pretty unbelievable how much is packed into this tiny little wonder. I love mine. What I don't love is the fact that Teenage Engineering has completely failed at providing a user-friendly manual for it. The web-based manual that is provided plus the minimal instructions included in the packaging is the weakest I've ever seen from any manufacturer in the 40 years I've been involved with synths! If you buy this, you will love it. But, you will be shocked at how little help the manufacturer is at helping you learn how to operate it. You will need to watch tutorial videos on YouTube by True Cuckoo, Loopop, and Red Means Recording if you want to learn how to use it. While they are great tutorials, no synth should leave you with unanswered questions requiring you to search the internet just to understand how to operate it! Shame on you, Teenage Engineering!

The OP-Z is a ton of fun. It's really easy to use. The drums sound really good and the synth engines are good but not great. I'm really easy on it and use a case if it goes anywhere but I'm disappointed with the build quality. The encoders have not poped out but my buttons do have double triggering that happens on occasion. I love that it's portable and take it with me a lot. I love it.

I have an OP1 and the OPZ. I love using them together. The OPZ is such an amazing piece of gear that is highly portable. The small speaker on it is pretty useless and the quality of materials used is pretty horrible. I wish it was in an aluminum body like the OP1. Really confused as to why they chose to skimp out on the quality. Still worth it though due to the possibilities in creation and sequencing.

Love this thing. It'a a lot to wrap your head around but very much worth it.

At its heart, this is a 16-step sequencer with 8 audio tracks (4 drums, 4 synths). However, it's much more powerful than that -- you can record leads that don't align with the steps, set individual tracks to have lengths other than 16 steps, create step jumps and triggers, or produce an endless number of other non-stepwise variations. There are also 8 sequenceable non-audio tracks: you can actually sequence tape effects, or key changes and transpositions (using the "master" track). The synth engines are actually pretty good -- there are a couple different ones, and you can patch in an LFO and various effects. Also, the device is truly tiny, about the size of a long candy bar. I carry it around my my backpack with a good pair of earbuds. You'll want an iOS device or Mac of some type, since the app gives you a screen and significantly reduces the learning curve.

I loved this thing but I decided to return it because for 600$. I don’t feel like it’s worth that much and I could use that money to buy a synth like this for the fraction of the price. Beware buyers

Very poor construction quality for premium price

I returned it as it was faulty, I should have read the other reviews which mention the same problems as I had. Let down by very poor construction quality, the chassis was slightly bent up at each end, the volume knob fell off, and many of the keys did not work properly, sometimes they failed to trigger and other times they would trigger multiple times when only pressed once. I thought it might be a firmware bug, so I updated it but the problem did not resolve, if anything it got worse. I only kept it for a few days but in that time it was treated very carefully as it is so small and flimsy feeling. A real shame because it has the potential to be a good product with some interesting features, it is way smaller than expected and very fiddly to use - even more so than a Pocket Operator, but Pocket Operator has better buttons, which never gave me any trouble. For the over £400 I paid I expect much better build quality, even if it was half that it would still not be worth the money, it is too small and flimsily built for practical use.

Magnificent thing but you will have QA issues

First off, I went through 3 of them to get a good one - don't let this dissuade you. You'll read about them bending which seems to be a manufacturing issue and one they won't be fixing. For me, it didn't cause any fault at all and for safety (and paranoia) I stuck some small rubber feet on the edges and importantly in the middle so when I'm pressing it it's not bending any more. It's a very solid structure but better to be safe as they're not cheap. All three of mine had this bend but the one I kept was least bent - don't worry though. The four dials at the top are magnetically in place and should be smooth to move around. One of mine wasn't and I've also read some pop out - that's because it was assembled with the magnet the wrong way around - easy to fix and you will be able to fix it yourself if you need to. So now you're thinking this is a piece of crap. It isn't. It's the most incredible thing TE make and is worth all the apprehension in finding the right one. Sound, functionality, flexibility, hidden depths, tricks all get a ten. Just watch some of Cuckoo's videos or Red Means Recording. If you're worried about getting into sequencing and want to dip your toe in then get an Arcade Pocket Operator but you will end up with one of these as well. A staggering bit of kit and I'll never be without it.

When something sounds too good to be true....

...it's normally because it is. This could have been a fantastic piece of kit but it's just not. Like many before me i really wanted the countless reviews regarding build quality to be the unlucky few. Moving from a pocket operator I pictured the opz to be the perfect upgrade. On arrival i immediately identified the infamous banana curve casing, but i was determined to look past the cosmetic deformity in the hope that the performance and function is everything i thought it would be. First thing after turning it on the equally infamous double triggers were already kicking in. Again push on to Moscow....An hour on the device i noticed the battery was dropping rapidly even without touching the device. Left to fully charge next day same thing only every 5 minutes the thing bricked and restarted itself. All the troubleshooting factory reset, take out battery for 30 seconds, upgrade firmware ECT....no luck. Literally everything people mentioned previously that could go wrong did. If you have money to burn buy this cheap toy, if your hoping to make a quality investment in your musical arsenal...this isn't it.

Great Synth, arrived faulty

After buying an op1 twice from Amazon and receiving 2 faulty products, I decided it wasn’t worth my time and money, and decided to go for an OP-Z. After opening the synth I was immediately impressed with the look of it and it’s build quality. However a few of the buttons were stiff and didn’t click very well. Tried to turn the unit on and nothing happened. Tried again to no avail. Plugged the unit in through the provided usb where it then powered on. It indicated the battery was 100 percent so I took out the usb, and the unit immediately turned off again. Turns out the battery and unit are completely faulty right out the box. It’s SO frustrating because I love teenage engineering’s products but having had 2 faulty op1s and 1 faulty opz in a row, I’m starting to loose my patience

Terrible quality. Amazon shouldn’t be selling it, to be honest. As per a lot of other one-star reviews here… Arrived with the casing warped, and the back plate (that holds the battery in) loose. But that was not the real problem. The real problem was that that battery didn’t work at all. After spending hours following all the online advice to get it working—and there’s a lot of that advice, because it happens to a lot of people—I gave up and returned it. These are all known faults, they happen to a large proportion of people; like many I read these reviews and thought “sure but what are the chances they happen to the unit I buy”… turns out that said chances are pretty high, actually. A great shame. The OP-Z workflow is ingenious (like a baby Octatrack), but that’s assuming the thing actually works. Have you heard of premium electronic products from other manufacturers that for many people simply don’t work when you take them out of the box? No, me neither.
