Let your teenager's tastes shine through with a bedroom color scheme he or she will love.
Yellow, gray, white, and black bedroom design with dandelion mural, yellow and white bedding, desk area with floating shelves, black and white striped rug.
By the time kids are teenagers, they usually have a pretty good idea what colors and style of decorating they like. With some guidance from you, your teen can choose a bedroom color scheme that will be an extension of his or her personality and a personal space that's perfect for spending time.
Teenagers love color; don't be afraid to let them choose bright shades of their favorites. Even color combinations that seem unconventional can work well together, or be modified to keep everyone in the household happy.
Orange, purple, bright blue and navy are all popular with the teen set. Even black can be used in ways that will create a look that is sophisticated enough to appeal to your teenager without looking dreary or dismal.
Purple is a particular favorite among teen girls; the color can be used for looks ranging from romantic to modern, depending on the shade and what accent colors you choose. For a glamorous look, pair a rich shade of purple with black furniture and art-deco light fixtures. White furniture and billowy fabrics will give a lavender room a dreamy feel.
Some teen girls still like pink, but they're ready to take the color up a notch. Try rich pink or salmon walls with accents in a bright shade of green, purple or sunny yellow. Modern furniture and geometric touches will keep a teen's pink bedroom from looking too young or frilly.
For a teen boy's room, try a warm brown or neutral beige with bright accents in orange, green or blue for a color pop. Many boys continue to like blue during their teen years, and a rich cobalt or navy looks good with accents in green or brown.
Some teenagers will gravitate toward neutral or paler shades for their walls. You can still bring color into the mix with fabric, rugs and other accessories. A girl's room in a soft blue or green can be pretty without looking "little girlish." For a boy's room, grey with navy is a good combination that looks good with unpainted or black furniture.
Teens often love wall murals, which work well on walls painted in lighter shades. Let your teenager's tastes and interests shine through. Geometric shapes, silhouettes from nature scenes such as trees or flowers, or sketches of musical instruments or hobbies are good choices.
If your teen son or daughter likes black, consider painting one wall, such as the one behind the headboard, as an accent. Black can serve as an anchor for brighter colors used in the room.
