This is Nottingham music event at Metronome on 3 December kicks off star’s year of fundraising and awareness raising for Teenage Cancer Trust
Actress Vicky McClure has today been announced as a Teenage Cancer Trust Icon.
The new Icon role at the charity is for high-profile figures across the entertainment industry who have volunteered to give a year of their time to raise funds for its vital support services for young people with cancer aged 13-24, and greater awareness of the huge challenges they face in life.
In her first act as an Icon, Vicky today launches This is Nottingham, a homage to her BAFTA winning performance in This Is England, which will take place at the Metronome, Nottingham, on Saturday 3 December.
The intimate gig featuring top local talent will be headlined by city-based drum and bass artist Bru-C, fresh from his Australian and New Zealand tour. And because demand for the event is expected to be high, people will need to enter a raffle, open from today, to try and secure a ticket. Entries will cost £10 for the chance to win a pair of tickets, with more names set to be added to the bill imminently.
Vicky said: “Nottingham is a hotbed of talent, from Oscar nominees to Olympic champions to chart toppers, so it feels right that a place with two Teenage Cancer Trust units should be hosting this incredible event.
“I’m so proud to call this city my home. Teenage Cancer Trust was founded on the understanding that young people are special which is why it is so important for this to be a celebration of young people and rising talent.”
For the past 30 years Teenage Cancer Trust has organised an annual series of fundraising gigs at The Royal Albert Hall, but this is the charity’s first big music event in Nottingham.
Headliner Bru-C said : “I am so proud to be working with Vicky on a homecoming gig for such an incredible cause.
“Nottingham is built on young people, and music is at the heart of what Teenage Cancer Trust is about, so it’s an honour to bring their Royal Albert Hall gig spirit out of London.
“It’s going to be a celebration of this great city and everyone in it, so don’t miss it.”
Vicky’s involvement with the charity started when she visited and later opened The Hogarth Teenage Cancer Trust hospital unit for young people at Nottingham City Hospital 10 years ago, and she came on board as an ambassador shortly after.
The star recently revisited the Hogarth unit and met with young people and Teenage Cancer Trust funded nurses and youth support coordinators where she learnt more about how they have been coping during the ongoing pandemic, with footage of the visit released today as she launches This is Nottingham.
The Hogarth unit, one of 28 run and funded by the charity across the UK, supports 19-24-year-olds and is designed to feel more like home than a hospital ward, with private bedrooms, cosy soft furnishings, TV and gaming facilities, and free Wifi and laptops.
The charity has a similar unit for teenagers aged 13-18 at Nottingham Children’s Hospital.
Teenage Cancer Trust’s core ethos is that cancer diagnosis shouldn’t define who a young person is. As well as funding units, specialist nurses and youth support teams within the NHS to help them through their ordeal, the charity does everything it can to make sure cancer doesn’t stop young people living their lives, during treatment and beyond.
Claire Boon, Teenage Cancer Trust Clinical Nurse Specialist at The Hogarth unit, said :
“I have met Vicky a couple of times on the unit; she is always delightful, kind and funny. She has a real way with the young people; she puts them at ease immediately with her warmth and relaxed approach. She also deals with the nurses who are fans with humility and self-effacement!
“We are so grateful that Vicky is taking this opportunity to increase awareness of the Teenage Cancer Trust whilst raising much-needed funds. It is imperative that as a charity we continue to provide age-appropriate specialist care and units, it is also vital that we continue to fight for the voices of young people with cancer to be heard and understood.”
Kerry Worton, aged 24, from Ripley, was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in May 2022. She said :
“The Teenage Cancer Trust unit at Nottingham City Hospital doesn’t feel like a cancer ward at all. Considering it’s in a hospital, it’s a really relaxed and comfortable place to be.
“Meeting Vicky was great. She was so easy to talk to and clearly cares a huge amount about the work that Teenage Cancer Trust does. It was so nice of her to sit down with everyone, take the time to listen to each young person, and hear what we’re going through.”
Logan Evans, age 20, from Nottingham, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in December 2020.
Logan said : “For me, the best part of being on the Teenage Cancer Trust unit was the freedom to be as sociable as I wanted. There was always the option to socialise with staff and other young people, but our individual rooms were big enough to sit in and relax if I didn’t feel like being around other people.
“It was great when Vicky McClure came to visit. All the nurses were so excited, and it was really fun to be part of it. Vicky listened really well to all our stories and seemed genuinely interested. She clearly wanted to help in any way she could.”
Kate Collins, Chief Executive, Teenage Cancer Trust, said :
“We’re delighted to announce Vicky as our first Icon.

“In these increasingly hard times it’s getting tougher and tougher to raise the funds needed to keep vital services for young people with cancer going, so Vicky’s commitment to Teenage Cancer Trust and young people with cancer is phenomenally important.

“With her help, we’ll also be able to shine a spotlight on the needs of young people with cancer – keeping them and their needs in the public eye.
“Over the coming months other top stars from across the entertainment industry will be showing their support for young people with cancer by becoming Icons for Teenage Cancer Trust, so watch this space.”
Craig Chettle, MBE Chief Executive of Confetti Media Group, who are donating the Metronome venue to Teenage Cancer Trust for the evening, said :
“Music has always been my passion and over the years it has been my job, and now I’m fortunate enough that I can support young people onto their journeys in the music industry.

“I am thrilled that Metronome is able to host an event that celebrates young and rising talent but also people being supported by Teenage Cancer Trust who are stars in their own way.”
