Most students want to improve their focus. They want to reduce their homework time. They want to retain more information from their study sessions. They want to perform well on exams.
But many well-intentioned teens sabotage their focus without realizing it.
If your teen is struggling to stay on task, ask them to consider these potential focus-destroying factors and pick two to work on this week:
1. Studying at the dining room table
It’s hard to focus when family members are constantly passing by or starting conversations. A dedicated study space minimizes disruptions. Pick a quiet room or corner and create a welcoming atmosphere with comfortable furnishings, good lighting, and a few plants.
2. Tackling the easy subjects first
There’s no need to make hard subjects harder! Approach them with a fresh, energized mind and save the easy stuff for later. If math is your most difficult subject, work on that homework first before moving onto English or history.
3. Studying for hours without a break
Instead of pounding out a three-hour study session, take a break every 30 minutes. You will work through the material faster and retain more of it long term. The breaks don’t have to be long. A few minutes of listening to music or stretching is all it takes to reenergize the brain.
Slouching is as bad for your brain as it is for your back. At SuperCamp, we teach students to sit up and lean forward as part of our SLANT protocol. Good posture triggers the mind to be more alert.
Instead of glazing over during lectures, ask the teacher questions and participate in discussions. This helps you engage with the material on a deeper level. (Plus, you will score brownie points with the teacher!)
6. Procrastinating until the last minute
Anxiety is the enemy of focus. Avoid feeling overwhelmed by planning study sessions in advance. For example, on Monday list all of your assignments for the week, and then decide when each one will be completed. Having a plan in place reduces procrastination.
7. Jumping right into writing assignments
Avoid writer’s block—and the distractions that come with it—with a quick brainstorming session . You will be less likely to drift off or get distracted if you have a clear plan.
8. Sitting in an uncomfortable chair
Nagging discomfort distracts even the most focused student. This is yet another reason to have a dedicated study space—one that accommodates an ergonomic office chair and desk set up.
It disrupts other students, it annoys the teachers, and it leaves the offender feeling flustered long after the class resumes. Arrive early and take a few moments to review your homework, especially on test days.
It’s hard to focus when negative thoughts are flying through our heads. This is doubly true when those negative thoughts are personal! Celebrate your abilities and accomplishments on a daily basis. As you become more confident, the self-criticism will fade away.

'So unfair!': Teenagers like Kevin and Perry, from Harry Enfield and Chums, can't help their lack of focus, scientists say
They can seem so distracted it's sometimes hard to believe teenagers have brains at all.
But they actually have too much grey matter, scientists say.
Despite looking like mini-adults, adolescents have developing brains that are similar to those of young children, making them less organised and more susceptible to distractions than older people.
Large amounts of the grey matter - the cells that crunch information - lead to chaos in their growing minds, the researchers add.
'It is not always easy for adolescents to pay attention in class without letting their minds wander, or to ignore distractions from their younger sibling when trying to solve a maths problem,' said researcher Iroise Dumontheil of University College London. 'But it is not the fault of teenagers that they can't concentrate and are easily distracted.
'It's to do with the structure of their brains. Adolescents simply don't have the same mental capacity as an adult.'
In the study, nearly 200 volunteers aged
between seven and 27 were asked to run through the alphabet, either in their head or with letters on a computer screen.
While doing this they were asked to classify the letters according to their shape by deciding whether the letter contained a curve.
The task tested their abilities to switch between focusing on thoughts and the letters in front of them. And their abilitiesto ignore distracting letters- those without curves - improved with age, the Journal of Neuroscience reports.
Brain scans showed that the pre-frontal cortex, the decisionmaking and multi-tasking
part of the brain, was more active in the teenagers than the adults.
This suggests they had to work harder to process the same amount of information.
Another researcher, Dr Sarah- Jayne Blakemore, explained: 'This means it continues to do a lot of needless work when making these sorts of decisions.
'What our research has shown is that there is simply too much going on in the brains of adolescents.
'The result is that their brain energy and resources are wasted and their decision-making process negatively affected.
'Our study offers evidence that parts of the brain involved in controlling how we switch attention between our own thoughts and our environment, as well as the speed at which we do so, continue to mature during adolescence,' she added.
The teenagers also had more grey matter than the adults - and chaotic processing of information could make it harder for them the concentrate.
Just think of fictional teenage stereotypes such as Harry Enfield's Kevin the Teenager and Perry, played by Kathy Burke.
The best friends make us laugh on the BBC's Harry Enfield and Chums sketches from the 1990s with strops and lack of communication.
But their actions - or lack of them - and those of millions of teenagers are explained away by the grey matter theory.
However, teenagers do not have it all their own way.
While they find it more difficult to concentrate, it is not impossible, Dr Dumontheil added.

No matter how hard you try, it seems impossible to focus on the task at hand. There are several psychological causes of difficulty concentrating, such as the following.
You may have difficulty concentrating due to an underlying medical condition.
You may have difficulty concentrating due to certain lifestyle habits or events.

Concussion symptoms tend to last for a few days to weeks. Sometimes, symptoms are long term, lingering for several months or even years. This is known as post-concussion syndrome (PCS). Some of the most common PCS symptoms include headaches and confusion. Memory problems and difficulty concentrating may also occur.
You should consider visiting a medical professional in the next two weeks to discuss your symptoms. A doctor can evaluate PCS with a review of your symptoms and an MRI. Once diagnosed, treatment depends on your specific symptoms but often focuses on letting the brain rest and recuperate. You may be asked to temporarily stop sports and exercise until you are cleared to return.
Insomnia disorder means being unable to fall asleep, or to stay asleep long enough to get the normal seven to eight hours of sleep per night.
Common causes are pain; sleep apnea; depression; stress and worry over life events; circadian rhythm disorders such as jet lag; aging; and certain medications.
Many medical conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, cause poor sleep. Women who are pregnant or menopausal may experience insomnia due to hormone shifts.
Symptoms include waking up during the night; feeling tired in the morning; daytime sleepiness and irritability; and increased errors and accidents through inability to concentrate.
Diagnosis is made through physical examination, patient history, and sometimes testing at a sleep study center.
Treatment consists of addressing underlying medical conditions, along with managing stress and checking all medications and supplements.
Improving "sleep hygiene" means establishing a routine of lying down in a dark room at the same time each night, with no television, computer, or phone. Avoiding food and caffeine before bedtime will prevent heartburn and wakefulness while trying to sleep.
Hypothyroidism , or "underactive thyroid," means that the thyroid gland in the neck does not produce enough of its hormones. This causes a slowing of the body's metabolism.
The condition can occur due to autoimmune disease; any surgery or radiation treatment to the thyroid gland; some medications; pregnancy; or consuming too much or too little iodine. It is often found among older women with a family history of the disease.
Common symptoms include fatigue, constantly feeling cold, weight gain, slow heart rate, and depression. If left untreated, these and other symptoms can worsen until they lead to very low blood pressure and body temperature, and even coma.
Diagnosis is made through a simple blood test.
Hypothyroidism is easily managed with daily oral medication. The patient usually starts feeling better after a couple of weeks and may even lose some extra weight. It's important for the patient to be monitored by a doctor and have routine blood testing so that the medication can be kept at the correct levels.

Generalized anxiety disorder , or GAD, refers to an ongoing feeling of worry and anxiousness about everything and nothing at once. The feeling never really lifts no matter what steps might be taken.
GAD seems to run in families, making some individuals more vulnerable to stress and environmental factors than others.
Symptoms include constant feelings of worry over everyday things and major events; difficulty concentrating or sleeping; being jumpy or easily startled; always feeling tired; irritability; and physical symptoms of headaches and body aches.
Ongoing GAD can be quite debilitating and interfere with quality of life. Any medical provider can send the patient to an appropriate physician for further help.
Diagnosis is made by patient history, followed by a physical examination to rule out any physical cause. The patient will be referred to a psychiatrist or psychologist for further evaluation.
Treatment involves cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps the patient learn to respond to the world in healthier ways and, especially, to manage stress. Antidepressant medication may be prescribed, since it can be helpful for anxiety.

Moderate depression , also called dysthymia or dysthymic disorder, is one of the three general forms of : mild, moderate, or severe. About half of all people suffering from have the moderate form.
The causes of any depression are not known for sure. Some may be situational, such as grief or other difficult life events. Others may be due to physiological causes such as chemical or hormonal imbalances.
Symptoms include loss of interest in normal activities; neglect of activities of daily living; and loss of productivity, though the person will continue going through the motions of attending work or school.
If not treated, moderate depression can worsen into major depression.
Diagnosis begins with physical examination and blood tests to rule out any physical causes. A mental health professional will talk to the patient to learn about any difficult situational factors.
Treatment may or may not involve antidepressant medication, since antidepressants generally work best for severe depression. Psychotherapy, exercise, relaxation techniques, and lifestyle improvements are usually tried first for moderate depression, and are often very effective.
