Tons of anime take place in some sort of high school setting, but there are some truly exemplary examples of the genre out there.
The anime industry is known for churning out a lot of "slice of life" comedy and drama series, and they often take place in a high school. This isn't an accident; many anime viewers are in high school themselves, so this academic setting is relatable and familiar. But that doesn't have to make for stale, routine storytelling. Some high school anime go above and beyond.
Some high school anime are just so charming, so heart-warming, and so funny that anyone who's getting into anime for the first time can try them out as an introduction to the anime world. The students in these ten high school anime have a lot on their plate: homework, insane teachers, bullies, crushes, or even a harem of magical girls or robot classmates!
Updated April 4, 2020 by Louis Kemner: The whole high school anime genre is such a huge and diverse field, we decided that a list of 10 isn't long enough to showcase the impressive variety of high school anime out there. We've all been to high school at some point, and that makes this genre so flexible and relatable: bullies, crushes, weird teachers, trying out for sports teams, and the bittersweet feelings of graduation. We collected five more high school anime that deserve a spot on our list, so here we go.
Updated May 22nd, 2020 by Louis Kemner: Once again, the concept of "high school anime" has proven itself such a huge and popular genre, there is a need to expand a list of "best high school anime" more than once to do all the best series justice. Most intended anime viewers are in middle and high school, so naturally, many anime series use that as a setting, even for horror, sci-fi, and fantasy series. With that in mind, it is time to add five more series to this list, for an even 20 overall.
Updated May 13th, 2022 by Sarah Martin: High school anime continues to be one of the most popular genres around. Whether it's touching high school romances, gruesome horror stories, or knee-slapping comedies, fans seem to love any anime that's set in a high school classroom. Since this list was last updated in 2020, we've updated it with five more high school anime that are worth watching.
Most high school anime try to keep things short, sweet, and funny. However, Classroom Of The Elite isn't afraid to call out the reality of high school. This anime observes the flaws of the education system and portrays it in a dog-eat-dog light.
Koudo Ikusei Senior High seems like the average high school, except with more freedom. It's a highly respected institution in Japan. However, appearances aren't everything. Within the schools' walls lies a harsh ranking system. Students at the top receive the best treatment, while those at the bottom are regarded as trash. Class rankings aren't permanent, but it's not an easy task to ascend in such a system, especially since it's built to work against those inside it.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is a romantic comedy anime that feels more mature than other high school titles. It observes love through the lens of psychological warfare. It's a battle of minds, and whoever confesses their love first loses.
The characters attend the elite Shuchiin Academy. They study there from preschool through college. Shirogane and Kaguya are the protagonists, and they're both student council members. Their peers agree that they'd be a cute couple, but neither is willing to show any vulnerability towards the other. However, their feelings for each other are apparent.
The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K. is a must-watch for any fan of comedy. The anime follows Saiki Kusuo, a teenage psychic with a seemingly endless roster of magical powers. It's fast-paced, and every episode adds to the show's already long list of running gags.
Saiki doesn't talk to other characters - only to the audience. He proves that high school is already hard enough, but it's even more challenging as a psychic who can read others' minds. He finds his powers and other people equally troublesome. The show doesn't follow a strict plot, but that's part of its charm.
Most romance anime often don't show what occurs after the confession, but Horimiya does just the opposite. Not only does it flesh out the relationship between the main characters, Miyamura and Hori, but it also expands upon the romance between its side characters.
Miyamura and Hori's relationship follows a tried-and-true trope but reinvents it. These two prove that opposites attract. At first, it seems like these two high schoolers would have never been compatible- Hori is a popular, bright girl while Miyamura seems like a geeky introvert. However, a chance encounter proves that there's always more beneath the surface.
After its release, Komi Can't Communicate quickly became one of Netflix's most popular anime. It follows Shoko Komi, a high school girl with severe social anxiety. However, her classmates practically worship the ground she walks on, completely unaware of her anxieties. Hitohito Tadano quickly picked up on her communication issues and vowed to help her achieve her goal of making 100 friends.
With dynamic storytelling and a lovable cast, fans fell in love with this anime for several reasons. Many fans feel that Komi gave them the representation they needed, while others appreciate the adorable slow-burn romance between Komi and Tadano.
Magical Sempai is a short anime that streamed on Crunchyroll during its summer anime season. It's a tiny series, since each episode is just 12 minutes, but that's still enough time for all kinds of magic. An unnamed sempai (upperclassman) launches her own stage magic club at her school and recruits a hapless underclassman to help her out.
But this poor girl suffers from dreadful stage fright, and her tricks go wrong in all kinds of ways. Still, it's a fine way to learn tricks with coins, ropes, and even mind reading.
Sometimes, adults might wonder what would happen if they could just do it all over again. Enter ReLIFE . In this 12-episode series, a frustrated job seeker named Arata Kaizaki meets a mysterious young man who offers him a pill to become ten years younger, and right back in high school!
It's part of an experiment, and Arata dives right in. He learns a few life lessons along the way, and some of his classmates might have a few secrets of their own.
This series may be set in a high school, but something is off about it. The male lead, Yuzuru Otonashi, ends up at an unfamiliar high school where a petite girl with angelic white hair is getting shot at, and he gets caught in the crossfire.
This high school is actually a sort of purgatory for students who died in real life with unresolved issues, and it turns out that Angel (the petite girl) may not be the real problem after all. The characters have to look inward to find peace and move on.
Most high school anime is hilarious and exciting, and Oresuki is no exception. Anyone who thinks one love triangle is compelling is in for a treat. In Oresuki , the main character (who goes by Joro) is asked to speak privately with two different beautiful girls. He hopes that he's about to get some love confessions.
But no! Both girls are into his friend, Oga, and he hopes to date whichever girl Oga rejects. But the quiet library girl, Sumeriko, then confesses to Joro, and Oga is interested in Sumeriko! Things only get more complex from there.
This heartwarming high school anime has a roughly similar premise to The Quintessential Quintuplets, another quite popular high school anime. This anime isn't quite on par with Quintuplets , but it comes close.
Meet Nariyuki Yuiga, a humble but smart boy who becomes the private tutor for these three girls: Fumino, Rizu, and Uruka. Yuiga only meant to tutor them... but he soon gets involved in a whole lot more than that!
Kakegurui has a thriller edge to it, and unlike many other anime in the genre, it's not just a collection of high school hijinks. Instead, viewersvisit an elite school where the students are the children of wealthy families and business owners... and they're enrolled to learn the ways of gambling!
These boys and girls are the smartest, most cunning, and most daring high school students ever seen in anime, and some truly high-stakes poker, blackjack, and roulette all lie ahead. All the chips are down... literally.
On some levels, this short animated series is a romance between high schooler Akira Tachibana and her middle-aged, divorced boss, but that is just the start. After the Rain is actually a quietly uplifting series about healing and self-confidence.
Akira loves running track, but an unfortunate injury sidelined her, and she fell for her boss as a way to heal herself. Her boss (and his young son) cheered her up and gave her all their earnest support, and perhaps one day, Akira really will run like the wind again.
It has quite a name, and the title really only covers the first arc of this short series. Meet Sakuta, a high schooler who meets his upperclassman in the library in a bunny girl outfit. But this is not a cheap, erotic series. Instead, Sakuta and his senpai, Mai, start a quest to help their classmates, who suffer from "adolescence syndrome." Anyone with this syndrome seems invisible and unheard, and they are terribly lonely.
Along the way, Sakuta helps his little sister Kaede overcome her fear of the outside world and become a member of society once again.
Yamada-kun And The Seven Witches is a classic harem anime. It's not just any average harem, either- it features a set of seven magical girls . As expected, this anime packs all kinds of high-voltage high school hijinks, and it all starts when Ryu Yamada trips and knocks over his classmate on the stairs. But then they swap bodies, not unlike Freaky Friday or Makoto Shinkai's Your Name .
Turns out, this school is home to seven witches, and kissing them means borrowing their powers! Now Ryu faces body-swapping, mind reading, invisibility, and more.
Don't be fooled by this "beach episode" scene: Another is a gruesome horror anime, and a cheerful scene like this one is very much the exception. Set in the year 1998, the protagonist, Koichi Sakakibara, ends up in the notorious class 3-3.
One girl in his class, the pale Mei Misaki, is totally ignored, and Koichi is determined to find out whether this class is really "cursed" or not. All kinds of horror ensue, and Koichi and his friends might not make it out alive.
Nichijou is truly wacky and insane, even by anime standards. Viewers never know what they'll get with each episode of this whiplash anime, and none of the characters are as simple as they look. Except possibly for Yuuko, who mostly reacts to the lunacy around her (and struggles to study, too).
Around Yuuko are classmates like Mio, the energetic manga author in training, not to mention Nano, a robot girl with a huge crank on her back. Don't forget the kid genius Professor and her talking cat, Sakamoto!
This is a staple high school anime, and the manga is a must-have for any collection. Azumanga Daioh! looks tame compared to some others in the genre, but it holds up. It features six main girls, who each annoy each other, take up nonsensical challenges, daydream about another life, and run for their lives in the school festival. The tall, stoic Sakaki hides a soft side that adores cats, and Chiyo is a kid genius who's still a bit naive despite her smarts.
Their homeroom teacher, Yukari Tanizaki, is more bratty than half her students are, and Mr. Kimura keeps shouting all kinds of inappropriate things. But still, it's heart-warming to watch all these girls grow up together, and Azumanga Daioh! bids each character a fond farewell upon graduation. Where will life take them next?
This comedy shojo series is set at Ouran high school, where the female lead, Haruhi Fujioka, accidentally breaks a valuable vase. To make things right, she joins the host club, where handsome boys reside, and she is thrust into what's known as a reverse harem.
It's all fun and games, and this series isn't afraid to gently make fun of the various conventions and stereotypes of the shojo genre. Plus, it's quite something to see the female lead get mistaken for a boy several times.
Thie Quintessential Quintuplets is a harem anime , and it trades magical girls for a set of five identical sisters with clashing personalities. The male lead is Futaro Uesagi, a plain but very smart boy who is asked to tutor the five Nakano sisters, who struggle with their grades. Hilarity ensues as Futaro tries to juggle these boistrous and uncooperative sisters, though he gets a break as they start to appreciate him and what he can offer them.
Even more tantalizing is the mystery of which sister Futaro will marry. It's made clear early on that Futaro will wed one of these girls, but viewers are never sure which one it will be. Future seasons may unveil the bride once and for all.
The school in Assassination Classroom is no ordinary high school. It may not be cursed and there's no body-swapping or gambling, but there is a big yellow alien, Koro-sensei . He is an invader who wants to doom the entire Earth, but he also wants to teach.
So it falls to the students of his class to use specially-designed weapons to try and assassinate Koro-sensei, but that's easier said than done. And they still have lectures, homework, and exams on top of everything else, too.

Homosexuality is something that has been a part of anime for a long time. In most shows, we can find one or two characters who are homosexual. Sometimes their portrayal is quite realistic or interesting while other times they are usually used for comic purposes. Since I have already done a list on anime with lesbian characters , it’s about time I compile those who have gay characters. Here’s the list of top anime with gay characters. You can watch many of these best gay anime on Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime.

‘Sekaiichi Hatsukoi’ is based on a light novel that first came out in the year 2006. There have been four anime adaptations of the manga. Two are anime series, one is a movie, and one is an Original Video Animation. The protagonists of the anime are Ritsu Onodera and Masamune Takano. Ritsu works as an editor in his father’s publishing company. He is quite good at his job, but still, people think that he has the job because his father is the owner. When he can no longer bear the jealous attitudes of his co-workers, he decides to quit his job and join another publishing company to prove his worth.
He applies for a job in the Marukawa publishing company and hopes to get a position in the literary section. He does get a job at the literary section, but it turns out he has been put in the shoujo manga department. Ritsu wants to resign, but when his boss Masamune Takano calls him useless, he stays to protect his pride. Later Masamune finds that Ritsu is his old schoolmate who had confessed to him. Now that they are reunited, Masamune vows to make Ritsu fall in love with him again since the latter had become reluctant towards love due to the heartbreak he received at school. You can watch the series on Funimation .
One of the main reasons why ‘Kono Danshi, Mahou ga Oshigoto Desu.’ is on this list is because the anime has got potential. For the lovers of shounen-ai, the characters are pretty important, sometimes more than the plot. The manga version has got a loyal fan base because of the story and the characters, but the anime adaptation could have done much better. Since each episode is quite short and there are only four episodes, everything seems to move too quickly, and it’s hard to get close to the characters. But it’s a fun show if you are just looking to watch some shounen-ai on the fly. ‘Kono Danshi, Mahou ga Oshigoto Desu.’ has a fantasy theme.
The protagonist Chiharu Kashima is a wizard. He is pretty skilled at magic. Chiharu frequents a bar he likes. One day a man named Toyohi Utsumi approaches him and tells him his love for magic. Later he confesses to Chiharu that he has fallen in love with him. As time passes, they grow closer and start spending more time together. But Chiharu is afraid that Toyohi is only in love with him since he is a wizard. The anime is available on Crunchyroll .
