“The Third Wife” was pulled from movie theaters in Vietnam after audiences expressed outrage about controversial sex scenes involving then 13-year-old actress Nguyen Phuong Tra My.
Although “The Third Wife” was praised internationally, the Ash Mayfair-directed film received backlash from viewers in Vietnam when it made its premiere in May 2019. However, the Ho Chi Minh-born director and the producers decided to withdraw the movie from cinemas days after it was released.
According to The Straits Times , audiences were shocked to see My, who was 13 years old when she shot the film, have an intimate moment with a much older co-star on-screen. They later blasted the 34-year-old director for her decision to cast such a young actress for the role.
Following the controversy, Mayfair spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to defend her side and her rights to make a movie.
“I am speaking up for artists and for the right to create,” she said. “This [controversy] cannot make Vietnamese artists afraid to express their viewpoint.”
The actress’ mother was also targeted by the audience which slammed her for allowing My to play the character. Some of them also wondered if My’s mother was blinded by fame and money.
But Mayfair told THR they “didn’t do anything wrong” and broke no law in “The Third Wife.”
“They can’t attack us on those grounds so there have been attempts to smear the ethics of the actress’ mother, publishing her personal details on line and saying she had sold her daughter for money,” Mayfair continued.
“ The Third Wife ,” set in the late 19th century in rural Vietnam, follows the story of 14-year-old May (My) who becomes the third wife of a wealthy landowner through an arranged marriage.
Before the film hits theaters and film festivals, Mayfair had already anticipated the reactions “The Third Wife” would receive in Vietnam.
“These questions are open for debate and I have no problem with that,” Mayfair said. “We talk about women’s rights and we are very critical about patriarchal traditions that have been in the country for centuries.”
Officials working in child protection were against the use of child actresses being made to perform in sexually explicit scenes, adding that it could have psychological effects on the child, VnExpress reported.
The now 15-year-old My, who reportedly convinced her parents for the role, became upset after learning many Vietnamese people wouldn’t be able to see “The Third Wife.” She was selected after more than 900 candidates auditioned for the movie.
The filmmakers of “The Third Wife” were reportedly fined around $2,000 for failing to comply with the Vietnam censors’ initial request to make three cuts in the production. However, they invited Mayfair to resubmit the film again for approval, but the director declined to make further cuts.
The movie was met with wide critical acclaim overseas and won awards at international film festivals. It was also honored by a Special Mention prize at the Bangkok Asean Film Festival in July.

I've been living with this secret for four months – she has no idea I'm aware of what went on
My wife cheated when she was on a hen party abroad five years ago and I’ve only just found out about it.
She’s 40 and I’m 43 and we’ve been married for 14 years.
Until now I’ve never been concerned about our relationship or believed she could be unfaithful.
I’ve known about the cheating for four months after her friend let slip she’d slept with a young guy on two occasions.
Every day I see her laughing and smiling, as if she’s nothing to hide, meanwhile my insides are churning and I have mental images of her sleeping with this guy.
My attitude is changing towards her and I feel like leaving.
I’ve also lost my sex drive and my confidence. I want to scream out that I know what she did.
She has asked if I’m OK but I’m struggling to deal with this lie. I think I hate her for doing this to me.
Should I confront her and leave or just leave?
OK, you can’t ignore this now you know – your wife has already sensed something is wrong.
If you do bottle it up, your anger and resentment will grow so I think it’s better to feel more in control and approach it calmly.
Also, you haven’t given her a chance to tell her side of things or explain why she cheated, if she cheated.
You only have her friend’s word and I’m not sure why she spilled the beans unless it was to cause trouble.
Of course you’re going to feel devastated and betrayed, but it’s important to talk about it and work through it rather than just leave. You’ll have things you want to say and ask.
I don’t think you can decide what to do about your marriage – to try to work through issues with or without counselling or to walk away – until you’ve had the conversation with your wife.
Yes, it’ll be painful, but it’s already painful.
It might also be a good idea to have some counselling on your own initially to help you.

Dear Coleen: My wife of 36 years is having sex with widow who lives next door

My wife of 36 years is sleeping with the woman next door and I don't know whether to ignore it or put a stop to their new, intense friendship
My wife and I have been married for 36 years, we are very happy together and have four grown-up children and six grandchildren.
Just over a year ago, a lady moved in next door to us – she’s a widow aged 56. My wife and I have got along really well with her and are pleased to know her.
My wife will often go shopping with this woman and, before lockdown, they went to bingo together and also had the occasional day trip outing.
My wife has now told me that “it’s no reflection on me”, but she is having a sexual relationship with this woman next door.
To be honest, I wasn’t that surprised by what my wife told me – over the past few months I’ve had a hunch that it was more than a friendship.
My question is, should I just ignore it and leave things as they are or should I tell my wife this friendship has to stop? It hasn’t affected us in any way – we still have a healthy sex life and get along really well.
My wife said she told me because she didn’t want me to find out in another way. I’d appreciate your advice.
You seem to have reacted in a very calm and rational way to this, but how do you really feel?
Are you just trying to convince yourself that it’s OK, that you can deal with it and you’re happy to carry on as you are because you’re frightened your wife will leave you? Or are you genuinely fine with it?
If you’re not OK with it, I think you need to admit that and speak up now. The fact is, your wife is having an intimate sexual relationship with another person and that’s bound to have an impact on your self-esteem and on your marriage.
Maybe things are fine now, but their relationship could develop further and where does that leave you?
I think it’s good your wife told you rather than carry on an affair behind your back.
But, in the spirit of honesty, I think relationship counselling might help you to work through your feelings and talk about where the marriage is heading.
It’s important to be honest with yourself and with her or you might be setting yourself up for heartache down the line.

An Oklahoma woman has recalled the horrifying moment she learned her dad had bedded her best friend.
Autumn Ankerich, 21, shared the shocking story in a TikTok video that has racked up more than 1.7 million views since it was posted earlier this month.
“Thinking about the time on vacation I found a condom wrapper in my dad’s truck from the night before but he was only with me and ‘bff,'” the disturbed daughter captioned the clip.
In a subsequent interview with Jam Press, Ankerich detailed how she confronted her gal pal after finding the incriminating item inside the vehicle.
“I asked her why there was a condom wrapper on the seat and she told me she thought it was a dream,” Ankerich stated.
The frisky friend initially refused to admit she had bedded her bestie’s dad, saying they “just made out.”
However, after further interrogation, the pal eventually admitted to the steamy sex session — prompting the end of their longtime friendship.
According to Ankerich, the backstabbing bestie brazenly bragged about the X-rated romp on social media.
“She posted [about it] on Instagram a few weeks later,” she told Jam Press.
Ankerich and her former friend haven’t seen each other since.
Despite Ankerich’s initial shock, she says that, in retrospect, both her dad and her best friend were acting suspiciously on the night of their truck tryst.
“My friend was flirting with my dad and he was flirting back, so I went to the room as it made me uncomfortable,” she stated. “I used to be a ‘daddy’s girl’ but as I got older and smarter, we grew apart because I realized he wasn’t normal.”
The best friend was over the legal age of consent, and Ankerich does not accuse her father of any criminal wrongdoing.
Meanwhile, the story stunned TikTokers, many of whom responded with quippy comments beneath Ankerich’s video.
“So she was calling him daddy too?” one viewer joked.
“I mean at least he used protection,” another wisecracked.
