23 Trans Models Making an Impact on the Fashion Industry — And the World
From Munroe Bergdorf to Dara Allen to Laith Ashley, these are our favorite models making waves beyond Fashion Week.

While the fashion industry still has long strides to make in terms of inclusivity and equality, recent years have seen the kind of progress that trans people once only dreamed of. It was just 10 years ago that Isis King became the first trans woman to compete on America’s Next Top Model, an arc on the show that ignited a larger dialogue about trans representation and visibility in American media. The decade since has seen a number of milestones for trans people in fashion: Major agencies like Next, IMG, and HEROES have grown their trans rosters by degrees, and in recent years, a number of major industry players, from Vogue to Marc Jacobs, have made history by including trans people in major public-facing covers and campaigns.
With New York Fashion Week behind us and London, Paris, and Milan Fashion Weeks carrying us through the rest of month, we’ve compiled a short list of some of our favorite trans models working today.
A fierce advocate in the trans community with beginnings in the Chicago ballroom scene, Leyna Bloom moved to New York in her late teens to dive into the world of modeling. Bloom has walked for Chromat and The Blonds, and has appeared on magazine covers such as Galore and Candy alongside other notable trans women like Janet Mock, Juliana Huxtable, and Carmen Carrera. Recently, she led a viral social media campaign to become the first trans woman of color to walk for Victoria's Secret. Her next step? Appearing in the upcoming film Fluidity alongside Nico Tortorella and James Chen.
Garnering magazine covers such as Attitude and Gay Times, and television spots including Strut and Pose, Laith Ashley is one to watch. In addition to being a model, Ashley is also a recording artist — and he’ll be dropping his first music video in the coming weeks.
In 2016, Teddy Quinlivan came out to the world as a trans woman in an interview with CNN-Style. Previously working in the industry as stealth, Quinlivan now uses her visibility in fashion to advocate on behalf of the larger trans community. She has spoken out on platforms like ELLE and Refinery 29 about the injustices trans people face. As a model, she has worked with labels including Vera Wang, Monse, Louis Vuitton, Alexandre Vauthier, and Moschino.
In 2017, Parisian model Ines Rau made history as the first out trans woman to appear as the Playmate centerfold in Playboy. (Trans model Caroline "Tula" Cossey was not publicly out when she appeared in a photo spread in the magazine in 1981.) Rau has also appeared in Vogue and Vogue Italia, and models for major fashion labels including Balmain and Hood By Air.
Kenny Ethan Jones made headlines earlier this year after starring in the I'M ON campaign by Pink Parcel, in which he spoke about menstruating as a trans man. Since then, he has continued to advocate for the trans community by appearing on programs such as U.K. Channel 4’s Genderquake: The Debate alongside Munroe Bergdorf. Jones also creates educational content such as his docuseries Transparency, which brings issues of transitioning to light. He recently appeared in River Island's #LoveNotLabels Pride 2018 campaign.
Dara Allen made major strides down the Marc Jacobs runway as an unsigned model in 2017. To appear in that show without agency representation is a testament to this model’s drive and talent. Allen has appeared in magazines such as Candy, LOVE, and on the cover of i-D. Recently signed to HEROES modeling agency, she continues to model for brands such as Prabal Gurung, Coach, and R13.
Chella Man is a Deaf and trans advocate, artist, student at The New School, newly minted model, and columnist at them. He has been documenting his transition on testosterone through his them. column "MAN-MADE," and has starred in videos about ASL and Deaf culture alongside Nyle DiMarco. Man recently modeled in American Eagle's Pride 2018 campaign alongside his girlfriend, photographer MaryV Benoit.
A recent signee to Next Models, Massima Lei is a new face in fashion who continues to break ground by modeling for major labels including Eckhaus Latta, Marc Jacobs, Coach, Miu Miu, Givenchy, and Maison Margiela.
Nineteen year-old Casil McArthur came into his trans identity through cosplay, as reported by W magazine. Although McArthur was discovered and modeled women’s clothing throughout his childhood, he used the cosplay to grapple with his dysphoria. Not long after beginning his transition after being a child model, he was signed to modeling agency Soul Artist Management. He has since worked with Marc Jacobs, Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein, and Milk Makeup.
In addition to being a writer at them. and columnist at Teen Vogue, Devin-Norelle has been featured in Paper, Nylon, Refinery29, and several other publications for zis advocacy work regarding trans issues. Ze has walked for shows including DapperQ and Marco Marco. Ze says, “I view modeling as an extension of my advocacy. Trans people are models too, and we deserve to be booked.”
Maya Monès is a Brooklyn-based DJ and veteran model with credits including Gypsy Sport and Chromat. She speaks out for trans femmes of color through her music with Discwoman as well as her writing.
Munroe Bergdorf is a model for top designers such as Gypsy Sport. She is an advocate for trans women of color, and speaking on national television and penning essays for several publications, including them. Bergdorf has appeared in editorials and on the covers of magazines including i-D, Noctis, and Playboy.
Artist and writer Fatima Jamal burst onto the scene with her groundbreaking documentary No Fats, No Femmes, analyzing rejection and otherness within the LGBTQ+ community. Jamal made her modeling debut this past February for Gypsy Sport's Fall/Winter ’18 runway show, and continues to walk for the label. She was recently featured in the campaign for Telfar’s vegan shopping bag line.
Last year, Valentina Sampaio made history as the first out trans model to appear on the cover of any edition of Vogue with her cover for the March issue of Vogue Paris. Originally from Brazil, she has appeared in L’Officiel Brasil, ELLE Brasil, and more.
ALOK is a performance artist making waves in the States, the U.K., and India. They are a frequent contributor for them., and they have modeled for several beauty brands, including Fruitcake, Opening Ceremony, and Wussy. ALOK recently released their own gender-neutral fashion line.
Torraine Futurum is a model and musician who has appeared in magazines including Dazed, i-D, Candy, and Vogue. She also stole our hearts in Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Boy Problems” music video. Futurum recently self-directed her first music video for the song “Unclaimed Perfection, Babygirl” from her own upcoming album.
Geena Rocero is an advocate, writer, and the founder of GenderProud, a global advocacy network working to help trans people fight for their legal rights. Born and raised in the Philippines, she comes from a pageant background, and made the switch to modeling after being discovered by a photographer in the West Village. Geena modeled for years before she publicly came out as trans during a TED Talk in 2016. Recently, she has walked for Chromat and Marco Marco, and appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar India.
Actress Jari Jones was made for the stage, and recently performed in a reading of the musical Wonder Boi at the 2018 New York Musical Festival. Jones has also appeared on our favorite show, Pose, as the character Butt Smack. Jones, who bills herself as a curve model, is currently featured in New York City Health’s Living Sure Campaign (you may have seen her face on the side of an NYC bus). She is also a fierce trans advocate, having spoken publicly about trans issues through her social media platforms as well as on Teen Vogue Take.
19-year-old artist Hunter Schafer, recently signed to Elite, is a fresh face in the modeling world. She has appeared in shows including Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs. In 2017, Schafer was named one of Teen Vogue’s 21 Most Influential People Under 21. Schafer advocates on behalf of the trans community — including joining the ACLU’s lawsuit against North Carolina’s anti-trans bathroom bill as a plaintiff — and is quickly becoming a rising star in the fashion world.
Arisce Wanzer is best known for her appearance on Oxygen’s trans reality series Strut alongside Isis King. With appearances in Vogue, Vogue Italia, Vogue Germany, and Forbes, Wanzer is no novice. She recently walked for Marco Marco’s NYFW presentation alongside several other well-known figures in the trans community.
A nonbinary model with credits including Eckhaus Latta and Barragán, appearances in Paper, and a shoot with David LaChapelle, Tzef Montana is on the rise. As an activist and artist, Montana uses their visibility to campaign on behalf of trans and gender-nonconforming people worldwide.
Oslo Grace made an impact this past year when they walked for two major fashion forces, Jeremy Scott and Gucci. Grace, who is signed to BMG models in New York, models both menswear and womenswear for their agency — and we can’t get enough of them.
Benjamin Melzer, a Europe-based model, is best known for being the first trans man on the cover of Men’s Health Germany. He also became Diesel’s first transgender model when he appeared in the Diesel X About You campaign. Melzer spends his time traveling between Germany, London, Milan, and NYC for various fashion campaigns.
