There's no doubt that the fashion industry has a way to go when it comes to transgender representation.
That's not to say, however, that there hasn't been progress. In 2019, major brands like Victoria's Secret and Chanel both named openly transgender models as major faces, proof that the tide really is changing, if slowly.
But ultimately, it's not about the brands. It's about the models who persevered despite years of society's ongoing discrimination and a lack of acceptance in the industry.
Thankfully, they did, and are now some of the industry's greatest forces for change. Here, we look at nine such transgender models who are taking the worlds of fashion and entertainment by storm. Scroll on to see them all.
Easily one of the most talked about models of 2019, Brazilian-born Valentina Sampaio made history as Victoria's Secret's first-ever transgender model. Victoria's Secret aside, the 23-year-old has quite the CV, having previously been a spokeswoman for L'Oréal and appeared on the covers of ELLE U.S., Vanity Fair Italia and Vogue Brasil.

Sampaio also made headlines when she became the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue's first ever transgender model last year in 2020. She's now returning for the second year in a row, making her one of two trans women to pose for the magazine in 2021.

While the issue won't be out until June, we'd have to agree with the sentiment of editor MJ Day who praised her for her advocacy work and called her "one of the most breathtakingly beautiful women I have ever met."

In August 2019, Theodora 'Teddy' Quinlivan became the first openly transgender model to be named a face of Chanel Beauty in a history-making move for the famed maison. She was discovered by Louis Vuitton creative director Nicholas Ghesquière in 2015, but did not come out as transgender until September 2017. She has since walked for numerous designers including Carolina Herrera, Louis Vuitton, Jeremy Scott, Dior and Saint Laurent.

Lea T (full name: Leandra Medeiros Cerezo) is a Brazilian-born, Italian-raised fashion model. A muse of former Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci (the 'T' in her alias stands for Tisci), she became the first openly trans face of the fashion house in late 2010. She's also appeared campaigns for Benetton and Philipp Plein, and posed for the likes of Numero, Interview, Love, ELLE, marie claire, Vogue Paris and more. In 2014, she marked another first for the trans community, when she became the first openly trans face of haircare brand Redken. She most recently reunited with Tisci to appear in Burberry's 2019 holiday campaign.

Currently starring in a lead role on HBO's critically acclaimed show Euphoria, Hunter Schafer is a talented force to be reckoned with. Besides having incredible street style, the model and actress has an extensive resume, having modelled for the likes of Dior, Miu Miu, Rick Owens, Maison Margiela, Helmut Lang and more.

One of Time's most influential people of 2019, model and actor Indya Moore currently stars on the TV show Pose, a show that has made history as the scripted series with the most transgender actors in lead roles. A model since the age of 15, the 25-year-old began their career working for Dior and Gucci, before moving into acting in 2017 with the critically acclaimed film, Saturday Church.

Model, singer and actor Laith Ashley kicked off his career in 2014 when photos of him taken by Nelson Castillo, modelling Calvin Klein underwear, went viral. Not long afterwards, Ashley appeared in Barney's campaign photographed by Bruce Webber, and hit the runway at New York Fashion Week. He's since appeared in campaigns for Diesel and Abercrombie & Fitch (pictured above), shot editorial for GQ, been featured in Vogue Hommes, and acted in Ryan Murphy's Pose.

Hardly a newcomer to the fashion industry, Australian transgender model Andreja Pejić has been breaking ground for many years. Although she rose to fame for her androgynous look in 2011, modelling both men and women's clothing for the likes of Jean-Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs, she did not come out as openly transgender until 2013.

Since then, Pejić achieved many 'firsts', including being the first-ever trans woman to sign a cosmetics contract and appear on numerous magazine covers. In 2019, Pejić achieved another major first, after being named the face of iconic underwear brand Bonds in the first-ever Australian campaign to be headlined by a transgender model. Pejic also starred in her first feature film in 2018 and is still pursuing acting, with a number of films in post-production.

Along with being a pioneering model, Leyna Bloom is an actress, dancer and activist for both the LGBTQI+ and black communities. Her modelling career started in 2014, and by 2017, she was one of the few openly transgender models in the industry, walking at New York Fashion Week. In the same year she also became the first openly transgender model of colour to appear in editorial for Vogue India. Adding to her collection of 'firsts', in May 2019, her feature film debut in Port Authority at Cannes Film Festival marked the first time a trans woman of colour held a leading role in a movie featured at a major film festival.

The second transgender model alongside Sampaio to feature in Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue, she is also the first Black and Asian trans woman the magazine has included.

Rising to fame on the eleventh cycle of America's Next Top Model in 2008, Isis King made history as the first trans woman to compete on the popular show. The move also made her the most visible member of the transgender community at the time. Since then, King has gone on to be the first openly trans face of American Apparel and has also created her own fashion line. King, who is currently focusing on her acting career, also appeared in Ava DuVernay's groundbreaking 2019 Netflix series, When They See Us.

Named as one of Business of Fashion's 500 most influential figures in fashion, Nathan Westling made his debut on the Marc Jacobs runway in 2013, when he was still going by the name Natalie. He's since posed in campaigns for the likes of Versace, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel, Dior, Alexander McQueen and more. In 2019, Westling announced that he would be transitioning. Since his announcement, Westling has walked the runways for Marc Jacobs and Helmut Lang during New York Fashion Week, and appeared on the covers of i-D, L'Uomo Vogue and Dazed.
