It took three years, but one man has finally achieved the masculine characteristics he's always wanted, and documented the transformation for the world to see.
Jamie Raines, now a 21-year-old psychology student at the University of Essex, started taking testosterone tables to transition from female to male when he was 17 years old, and he's taken a selfie every day since to track his facial changes.
Three years on and Jamie has produced a fascinating time-lapse video using more than 1,400 of his self portraits, which chart the gradual growing of his facial hair and the morphing of his bone structure.
Jamie Raines, pictured as a girl (left) at the age of nine and (right) at 21, as he is now, started taking the hormone testosterone when he was 17, having always felt he was born into the wrong gender
Jamie, who also runs a YouTube channel about his journey which has racked up more than 700,000 views, says that after years of feeling trapped in the wrong body, his reflection in the mirror finally feels right.
Soon to appear in a new Channel 4 documentary titled 'Girls to Men', he tells Femail of his transition experience: 'Growing in confidence and feeling more and more comfortable in myself has been a hugely exciting experience. The changes in how I feel about myself have been amazing.'
Jamie has also had 'top surgery' - a mastectomy and chest remodelling procedure - and says that aside from being a little less 'emotional' now, the testosterone hasn't changed his mood or character.
He was only around four when he first recalls realising that he was male, not female.
'I remember thinking I was just like any other boy,' Jamie says. 'Then as I grew older I realised more and more that I was different.
'I remember getting a haircut when I was around eight and afterwards turning to my mum and asking if I looked like a boy now. I felt like one and wanted to make sure I looked like one too.'

As Jamie grew up, he was always attracted to women, meeting his current girlfriend Shaaba, now 21 at a postgraduate at the same university, at college when they were 16.
'We were best friends for about a year before I came out as trans,' he explains. 'We’ve been together for nearly four years now, and she’s been a massive support throughout my whole transition.
'When I first told her she had no idea what being transgender meant! But she has been completely supportive of me from the start.'
Jamie, pictured (left) at 17 and (right) at 18, has produced a fascinating time-lapse video using more than 1,400 of his self portraits
The photos chart the morphing of his bone structure, and show his face getting longer as time goes on. Jamie at 18 (left) and 19 (right)
Jamie, pictured at 21, also noticed his nose change shape slightly, and developed facial hair after about two years
He notes that while half of Shaaba's family were very accepting of the situation, the other half found it hard to come to terms with.
'We both found this quite difficult at times,' he says. 'With time though, almost all of Shaaba’s family has come to accept us as a couple now, which has been absolutely great for us both.'
Jamie's family have always been at peace with his gender identity.
'My parents and brother have been amazing since the beginning and I’m very grateful to them for all their support,' he says.
'I told my mum first just after turning 17 and she helped me tell my Dad and brother. She said that it made a lot of sense because of how I had dressed and acted when I was younger.'
He adds: 'The first thing my brother did after he knew was call me "Jamie", my new male name.
'Obviously, they had some concerns, but only about me being happy and potentially being treated negatively for being transgender.'

Jamie met his girlfriend of four years, Shabaa (pictured) at college when they were 16, and revealed himself to be trans when he was 17. He says she was extremely supportive from the start
Jamie admits that this was a tricky element as he went through his transition.
'The hardest thing in the beginning was encountering people who didn’t understand and accept, but the further along I get the less of this I get,' he reveals.
One of the best changes brought about by the testosterone, Jamie says, was his voice changing.
'It was incredibly exciting to hear the changes, and it still surprises me now listening back on comparisons on how it’s changed,' he remarks.
'It was one of the most important things for me, and as soon as it dropped substantially at around the three to four month mark, I felt so much more comfortable.
'There was an awkward time in the first six months though where it did break and squeak a fair bit, but thankfully this has become very infrequent now.'
Jamie, pictured (left) graduating from the University of Essex this summer and (right) on the beach, is now doing a masters in psychology, with plans to start a PhD next year.
Always an avid photography fan, Jamie was keen to document his changes day by day from the very start.
'I thought it would be a cool way to see my facial changes and show people what testosterone can do,' he says.
'It was difficult to get into the routine of taking photos at first, so there have been a couple of occasions where I’ve forgotten. But now it's second-nature and I might keep going until I've done five years.
Jamie graduated from his undergraduate degree over the summer and is now doing a masters in psychology, with plans to start a PhD next year.
He's come a long way in a relatively short time and his advice to others who are transitioning is simple.
'If I've learned one thing, it's to be patient,' he says. 'I certainly wasn't always.'
You can clearly see the happiness in his eyes... H...
