Fourteen-year-old Corey Maison, a trans teen from Detroit, recently got a life-changing surprise when she opened a present that her mom had hidden inside her family's couch -- and discovered it contained the estrogen hormones Corey had been waiting more than two years to receive.
"Reach behind the pillow," her mom, Erica, says in a video capturing the moving moment.
"What did you do this time?" Corey asks with a smile.
"Do you know what that is?" Erica asks when Corey pulls an item out from between the couch cushions.
When Corey realizes what the box contains, there are tears of joy.
"Today after waiting 2 1/2 years she FINALLY got her estrogen," Erica wrote on Facebook about the great reveal of Corey's first step toward starting hormone therapy. "I picked it up while she was in school so she had no idea. We have been waiting months for the readiness letter to be finalized and sent to Chicago, so had no idea on a timeline of when it would actually happen."
Erica continued that she had to stop recording after nearly a minute because "we were both blubbering sobbing fools LOL."
Speaking to BuzzFeed, Erica said she could tell Corey "really had no idea what was happening" and that she was "very anxious and couldn't stop smiling." She called the reveal the "most pivotal turning point in [Corey's] life, and we both knew it."
Once Corey realized what the box meant, Erica said, "We were both crying and shaking. She literally took my breath away, as she has never given me a hug like that before. I have never felt so much love from her than that moment. It was a mixture of pure joy and relief from us both."
Erica described Corey as always being "feminine, even from the time she was very young" but wearing "boy clothes" in public.
But Corey was bullied badly in fifth grade, at which point Erica began to homeschool her. It was after that, Erica told BuzzFeed, that she and Corey both watched a video of YouTube star Jazz Jennings -- and everything changed. "She said, 'Mom, I'm just like her, I AM a girl." From then on, Corey had the confidence to dress in more traditionally feminine clothing in public, and her mother taught her to turn the negative looks and comments into something positive.
After receiving a puberty-suppressing implant, Corey's doctors determined that she'd be ready to start hormone therapy when she was 14. And then, last week, the pharmacy called to say her estrogen prescription was in.
"It was so surreal. I was shaking and crying the entire trip to the pharmacy," Erica told BuzzFeed. "I was trying to think of the best way to tell her that the day she had been waiting two and a half years for was finally here."
The Facebook comments on the video are full of support and love for the family.
