Her legacy made new versions of her inevitable, as part of a future group of Team Titans, and as a new hero departing from the Tara Markov mold.
In Teen Titans , Terra holds a special place as a character that was introduced to betray the team. She was also one of the first major characters introduced in such a way that she was never redeemed. She worked closely with Deathstroke to capture the Teen Titans for the criminal organization known as the HIVE.
Her legacy made new versions of her inevitable, first as part of a future group of Team Titans, and later as a new hero that departed from the Tara Markov mold. Recently, Tara Markov has come back, appearing as recently as Doomsday Clock #12 . There are little details that give a deeper understanding of the characters to use the name Terra.
Tara Markov was an illegitimate child of King Viktor of Markovia. She was sent to live in America to avoid a scandal. This abandonment affected her deeply, making her a bitter young girl. Her half-brothers attempted a relationship with her, exhibited by their reunion when the Outsiders and Teen Titans meet.
Being abandoned made her resent her brothers that had the power of their royal station, but apparently never using it. When she got her powers from Dr. Helga Jace, she relished them and the ways that she used them were as destructive as her warped personality. While there have been different explanations of her insanity, never being acknowledged by her own father was probably the beginning of it.
In Dark Multiverse: The Judas Contract , she realizes her true potential. Terra controls rock and Earth, giving her potential power over a massive amount of material, all under our feet. She had already proven able to tap into underground lava hundreds of miles away. The amount of earth and rock she could move was massive.
Even with the third Terra, the Ultra-Humanite realized how powerful she was. He threatened to rip Manhattan apart by moving the tectonic plates under the city. With his knowledge of biology , he knew just where to strike Power Girl to do the most damage to her internal organs. Terra can do so much more than throw around rocks.
Tara's infiltration of the Teen Titans was Deathstroke playing a long game to complete a contract for the HIVE. In the process, she led Beast Boy , then known as the Changeling to think that she cared for him. During the Titans' final battle with Terra and Deathstroke, Terra boasted that she used Changeling, despite her disgust in him.
In the New 52, she and Beast Boy served together on the Ravagers, where feelings definitely sparked between them. However, the true target of her affection is Deathstroke, who is vastly inappropriate as a love interest. The fact that he uses those feelings to manipulate Terra is further proof of how bad her emotional state is.
It has always been a subject of speculation whether or not Tara Markov and Deathstroke had a physical relationship. When asked bluntly by Beast Boy, Deathstroke refused to answer. However, George Pérez , one of Terra's creators made it clear that the relationship was inappropriately physical.
In TwoMorrows' Modern Masters, Volume 2 , Pérez was quoted, "I wanted her to look almost elven, so that when you see her for the first time wearing full-make up and dressed in a provocative outfit where you know she's just been in bed with Deathstroke that it does jab you a bit."
The second Terra was a mystery, traveling back in time to stop Lord Armageddon from taking control of the world. After Zero Hour collapsed realities, she and Mirage were all of their team that remained. They joined Arsenal' s New Titans and one day, an orb from the Time Trapper made its way to them.
In it, the Time Trapper explained how he sought to stop Monarch, who became Extant, from taking over Earth. Before he could explain Terra's origins in full, she destroyed the orb, not wanting to know the full truth of how she came to be. In the end, it was explained that she was placed by the subterranean society of Strata after being mixed with the original Terra's DNA.
In 2007's Supergirl #12 , a third Terra showed up. This one appeared very different from Tara Markov but was later proved to be a genetic match for her. She has later revealed to be from a previously unknown underground civilization named Strata.
Strata was a highly advanced society. Atlee, Terra's real name, was given Tara Markov's genetic code to protect the Earth. She sought to be a hero to the people of the surface, and confided in several heroes, including Tara Markov's brother, Geo-Force. She exhibited none of the unstable personality of the original Terra.
The third Terra is the only one to have her own comic, albeit a mini-series, from Amanda Conner , Jimmy Palmiotti , and Justin Gray . Afterward, the character had a recurring guest role in the first year of the trio's Power Girl series. The two became best friends, even sharing their own special moment in Strata.
Power Girl showed Terra what it meant to be a hero . She taught Terra about the world. Terra became a friend to Power Girl that she could truly trust.
After Power Girl's direction changed with the New 52, the third Terra had little direction. The original Tara Markov had returned, but Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti were not about to forget their favorite Terra completely. She became a member of Starfire 's supporting cast in the final issues of her 2015 series.
Atlee took Starfire and her friend Stella to Strata where they fought off an attempted violent coup. Terra took Starfire and Stella to the same pools she shared with Power Girl, but the effect was not quite as bonding. When Starfire left Key West she invited Terra to join her, but Terra refused, citing her responsibilities to protect Strata.
In Deathstroke #29 , we see in a flashback how badly Tara reacted to Deathstroke abandoning her. In Eastern Europe, she's locked herself in a bathroom and despite someone pleading for her to let them in, she's cutting her wrist in a bathtub. Deathstroke has made a habit of manipulating her, and it nearly caused Tara to kill herself.
It's never said outright, but Deathstroke using Terra really messed up a girl who was already unstable. He even claims that saying he never loved her is a way of controlling her. It's no surprise that afterward, Tara goes away for some time, resurfacing only to pay her respects at his funeral.
It has been theorized that the source of Terra's powers may be responsible for her insanity. In the Terra mini-series, it is explained that Quixium can give powers to humans and Stratans alike. In the mini-series, it is implied that Dr. Jace used Quixium to give Terra her powers and it is what made her mentally unstable.
However, this just builds off of a confrontation between Geo-Force and Deathstroke in DC Universe: Last Will and Testament. Geo-Force blames Deathstroke for his sister's death. Deathstroke implies that the powers drove her insane, just as they are now doing to Geo-Force, who took them on after Terra's death.
