Meet the "freshman" class of Teen Takes 2021-22.
New to the Courier Post and Daily Journal and returning to the Burlington County Times, Teen Takes — formerly known as Reality — is a weekly section where local high school students share their world views with our readers.
In all, 32 students from 21 Pennsylvania and New Jersey high schools are joining Teen Takes.

I am a sophomore at Florence Township Memorial High School. As a member of my school’s newspaper, The Florence Centennial, I have covered stories concerning the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the inauguration of President Biden, and the catastrophic Texas power outages of February 2021.
I enjoy cooking, photography, and learning about the world. I became interested in pursuing journalism through reading National Geographic and watching 60 Minutes. I saw Teen Takes as an opportunity to improve my writing and gain reporting experience, and decided to apply.
Hi everyone! My name is Nina Colella, I am a junior at Shawnee High School in Medford.
An interesting fact about me is that my favorite show is "New Girl." In a world where so much of the environment we have created is incredibly serious, the characters of the show bring a lightness and freeness that I think everyone could learn from at least a little bit, including myself! I truly do not think I have watched a single episode without laughing.
I wanted to join Teen Takes to share my thoughts and research on various subjects in a way that was productive, as well as to inform others on current happenings and cultivate awareness.
From me, you can expect to read about topics that are frequently shied away from and possibly a bit uncomfortable to hear about. Everything written by me will be produced with the hope of informing others, fostering an open community, and stimulating any necessary change.
Most of all, I hope that readers will begin to build a greater appreciation for the importance of perspective, a necessary component to success.
My name is Dillon Hampton, and I’m a 17-year-old from Mount Laurel. I’m going into my senior year at Lenape High School and I have three younger brothers that only mildly annoy me from time to time.
One fact about me is that I love to write fiction stories, and I’m currently in the process of writing a fantasy book that I started one year ago titled “Memento.”
I wanted to join Teen Takes to get some writing experience and know what it's like to write for an official entity and not just for school or myself. School assignments are usually very strict and condemning, and writing for yourself is fun and all, but I want to eventually write professionally.
You can expect me to always get my work done in an honest fashion, and I won’t mince my words in the slightest. I’m ready to answer any questions that come my way even if it makes me stand out from everyone else.
I’m Jason Hampton, a senior at Lenape Regional High School. An interesting fact about me is that I really enjoy listening to classical music, organ and violin pieces mainly.
The reason I decided to join Teen Takes this year is because I wanted to gain some experience in the writing field, as well as provide a unique and relatable viewpoint regarding topics and arguments that I have an interest in. As a teen, I want to spread my viewpoint to people who may or may not know about how life is as a teenager, especially during hard times like quarantine and near SAT testing.
I enjoy writing about problems that teens face, like social anxiety, peer pressure, and the stress of school life. Such topics interest me because I feel like a lot of older people don’t understand how hard it can be for teenagers during their high school years.
When I’m writing, I tend to write how I would talk, and try to be as concise and clear as possible while also adding a bit of humor and sarcasm to make the reader entertained and engaged while reading.
Overall, I enjoy writing to entertain and inform people, and providing a fresh and interesting take on certain things is my ultimate goal during my time as a part of Teen Takes.
Hello! My name is Owen Jacobs, and I am a freshman at Palmyra High School. I am new to the Teen Takes panel, this being my first year. One interesting fact about me is that I started doing jigsaw puzzles when I was three.
I happened to stumble across an article with information about how to join Teen Takes, and after I read through it I decided I would apply since I want to improve and hone my writing skills and meet other teen writers. I think that my decision will pay off over the next few years!
I plan on writing about how school has changed in so many ways for high school students in the past year, and what the future might hold for high school education. This will include how the pandemic affected high school, and how school is beginning to return to normal. I will also write about any other interesting ideas I want to share, and I would like to mix in a few articles about climate change and racial inequity.
I am very excited to share my opinions and positions on current events this year and help give fellow teens a voice in journalism, and I look forward to a fun year!
Hi! I’m Amani Malickel and I’m a junior at Our Lady of Mercy Academy. I love all things art, reading, and Netflix. I’m a huge procrastinator and overthink everything. Why am I sharing these not-so-great qualities with you? Well, because I think it makes me a relatable teenager.
I’ve written a lot in school, but Teen Takes is an opportunity for me to share my takes with a large audience, whether that be voicing my opinions, reporting, or anything else that I find interesting. I hope to connect with other writers my age and show readers insight into one teenager’s, hopefully relatable, perspective!
Hi! My name is Naomi Pirani and I’m a senior at Bordentown Regional High School.
One fun fact about me is that both of my parents are first generation immigrants! I wanted to join Teen Takes to gain new insight from other peer writers, all of whom I’m sure are extremely talented, and to further my exposure to the literary side of current events.
From me, you can expect to read about current events and pieces on other worldly happenings, past or present, that I’m passionate about.
Hi everyone! My name is Chantal Galarza Ramirez. I am a senior at Florence Township Memorial High School. I am also the captain of the volleyball team.
Something interesting about me would have to be that I own a little farm. My mini farm contains a bunch of chickens and ducks that I have raised with my father. I also have two dogs: a Doberman (Apollo) and a Chihuahua (Bella).
I wanted to join Teen Takes because I felt it was an amazing opportunity for me. I knew I was going to be able to express myself through my writing and share it with others. You can expect to read a variety of pieces from me, ranging from mental health, bullying and many topics that touch on what affects teens today.
Hi, Teen Takes! I am Arjai Rivera! I am 16 years old. I attend Cumberland Regional High School as a junior. One fact about me is that shopping is one of my favorite things to do (besides writing).
I joined Teen Takes because I love to get my opinion out there for people and I hope I can spark a few minds to join the communications field. I also want to be an editor of a magazine when I get older, so I can see how this is run.
Some articles you will expect from me are my point of view on current events, my opinion of different causes, fashion advice, the process I am going through with visiting colleges, different traveling experiences and my junior year. I cannot wait for you guys to see my world and my point of view of the world. See you guys soon!
My name is Summer Roberts and the 2021-22 school year marks my fourth and final year of attendance at Bordentown Regional High School. Joining my school's newspaper club and eventually rising to the position of lead editor initiated my interest in journalism, which I appreciate most for its collaborative and synergistic nature.
When I'm not writing for my school's newspaper or this column, I'm either prepping for my next Debate Club/Mock Trial/Model United Nations meet, curating a new playlist, or spending quality time with my dear cat.
The content I most enjoy producing aims to analyze and explain the subject matters I most enjoy researching: worldly affairs, cultural phenomena, and the relationships that exist between them. In the past, I've written on topics like the Israel-Palestine conflict, the rise of the transgressive alt-right in America, and the impact of COVID-19 on the adolescent attention span and education as a whole.
In a time when young people are exposed almost primarily to condensed, image-dominated digital information, having a place to read and write accessible and relatable content (with no character limits) has never been more necessary — luckily, this is just what Teen Takes provides. I'm excited to contribute to this effort.
Hi! My name is Amelia Schirmer and I’m 16 years old. I attend Hammonton High School and I’m currently in my junior year. An interesting fact about me is that I have a love for music and am musically inclined, so I really enjoy singing and I play bass guitar. I do both for my school by participating in concert band and Select Choir.
I also enjoy being involved in my school and community. I am on my school’s tennis team, and am a member of multiple clubs. I often participate in community service projects and annual events that happen in my small town, too.
I decided that I wanted to do Teen Takes as I’ve always loved writing, especially articles where I’m able to speak my mind and let my opinion be heard by the community. My mother is a writer, so I’ve definitely taken inspiration from her and her past works!
From me you can expect fresh and impartial views on topics relevant to me and my peers. I look forward to connecting with the readers in the community, as well as my fellow writers.
Hi! My name is Paige Venable and I’m currently a junior at Seneca High School in Tabernacle. One interesting fact about me is that I was born in Pembroke Pines, Florida, and lived in Weston until I was six years old. The Weston/South Florida area is one of my favorite places in the country and I can’t wait to visit again soon!
I wanted to join Teen Takes because I am the editor-in-chief of Seneca’s student-run newspaper, The Bird’s Eye View. Not only that, but I’ve truly developed a passion for writing over the past few years and strive to grow every single day. Through writing essays and articles, I’m truly able to express my thoughts and opinions and offer a unique perspective on different topics.
For this upcoming year, you can expect various types of articles from me such as ones about politics, high school sports, lifestyle, and so much more! I can’t wait to get started and am excited for what this experience has to offer!!
I’m M’Kai Williams. I’m 16, born and raised in New Jersey. Music and writing are my life. They are what truly make me who I am.
I go to Palmyra High School, and I’m a junior, 11th grade. One interesting fact about me ... there are a lot of those, to be honest. I suppose I could say that I don’t like to give up. When there is something I truly believe in and stand on, nothing or no one can make me betray my belief in this, whatever it may be.
As to what you may expect from me in Teen Takes, expect the truth. As I recall the point of Teen Takes is to let the silenced voices be heard, which is the entire reason I wanted to join. Let my silenced voice be heard among the loud screams of the lies. And now that I have this platform, hear me loud and clear. Issues regarding teenagers especially will be addressed, and nothing will be sugar coated or held back.
I am Jacob Woodruff, a sophomore at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield. One interesting fact about me is I was the only ninth grader at my school's newspaper last year.
I wanted to join Teen Takes after positive experiences in elementary school, working for the news. When I arrived at Paul VI, I immediately joined the newspaper, being challenged to come up with material for the paper as a virtual student, new to high school.
For Teen Takes, I hope to explore the South Jersey region from the teen perspective of what is going on in our community, spotlighting personal experiences that need to be told. I enjoy interviewing people, finding out what makes them interesting. Although this pandemic has been horrific, it has opened up new opportunities and experiences for all of us that need to be recorded for future generations.

A 16-year-old has taken the title of bringing the world’s cutest prom date: her 18-month-old son.
Melissa McCabe, from Merseyside in the UK, gave birth to her son Arthur at 15 and has raised him by herself since.
After she couldn’t find a babysitter on her big night, McCabe decided to take the most important guy in her life as her date — Arthur. She posted a TikTok of them before the event in their eveningwear, stealing the hearts of TikTok where it was viewed over 1.6 million times.
“Everyone was going to prom with their boyfriends but I took my biggest blessing,” McCabe writes on the video, along with a series of adorable photos of her in a blue ball gown and little Arthur in a tiny grey suit.
The clip was flooded with comments from TikTok users, praising the teen for her parenting skills.
“Omg you are the best mother the most gorgeous person I have ever had the pleasure to see,” one user wrote.
“This is the cutest…he looks so proud in his little suit,” gushed another.
She’s not alone in bringing her kiddo to prom either. Last week, a 16-year-old, who had a baby at 14, brought her son as a prom date, too , and said her school was pleasantly “shocked.”
McCabe told the Liverpool Echo she found it difficult when she first found out she was pregnant, as she was still at school and chose to raise him without his father.
“Everyone told me I was ruining my life and I wasn’t going to get my GCSEs. So many people make comments when I’m out with him,” she explained.

“Often people think he’s my little brother and when I tell them he’s mine, their attitude completely changes. Older people especially find it disgusting because obviously their way was to get married first and then have kids,” she added.
McCabe — who regularly posts videos about her life and raising her son — has secured a place to study Health and Social Care at college in September, according to the Liverpool Echo.
“My deputy head and my form tutor especially have been so supportive throughout it all,” she told the publication. “They’re the people who’ve got me through the bad times being a mom.”
