Google’s Project Ara seeks to develop a modular smartphone that could revolutionize the mobile industry, but one company--Entegra Technologies--has already announced a modular tablet that it believes will bring about radical change perhaps even sooner. The Entegra Crossfire Pro is a tablet whose components you can swap in or out without upgrading the entire system. At launch, it will sport a 9.7-inch daylight-readable display with a resolution of 1024x768 that supports touch, glove, or stylus input. The device is no featherweight at 2.5lbs. The heart of the system is the quad-core Intel M-Series N2930 COM (computer on module), which itself can be swapped out for another COM when necessary,... Read more...

As we've mentioned previously, Marco has been working on a Storage Media Server build for a project showcase at Symantec's Security with Speed site. The purpose of the site is an effort by Symantec to create awareness that their new Norton Security 2009 product has been completely engineered from the ground up with speed and low system resource utilization in mind. As a side benefit to their campaign, the Security with Speed site is also a pretty good resource for multitude of PC tech info, including HotHardware's contribution to the Storage Media Server project that Marco has been working on. Today we offer you the next installation of BigWop's video journal on building... A 19-year-old has apparently committed suicide while filming himself on the online live-video streaming service Justin.TV. According to NewTeeVee, not only has the suicide been confirmed, but he was apparently egged on by commenters at both Justin.TV and BodyBuilding.com. Abraham K. Biggs killed himself on camera Wednesday night. His handle was CandyJunkie on the Bodybuilding.com forum and Feels Like Ecstasy on Justin.TV. According to reports, he posted a suicide note on the Bodybuilding.com forum, but strangely (suspiciously), that forum is down for "maintenance." The suicide note was cross-posted to this forum, however. At that point, Biggs turned on his Justin.TV channel, took the pills and... Read more...

If you are a technophile, what's the first thing your wife / friend / relative does when they can't figure out something, or when there's a problem, no matter how small, technology-wise. Yep, they come to you. Now, yes, most of us here are technophiles, but besides that a new Pew Internet & American Life Project study (.PDF) which focuses on "When Technology Fails," seems to show that youth and gender play a role in how confident a user will be in fixing a tech failure by themselves. And yes, besides the obvious stats they gathered about how many failures may have occurred, Pew Research was focusing on how confident a consumer felt about fixing a problem when a failure occurred, as... It’s been rumored for a while, but Verizon Wireless just made the official announcement that the BlackBerry Storm (model 9530) from Research In Motion will be available beginning November 21 in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and online. The first ever BlackBerry smartphone with a “clickable” touch screen will run $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a new two-year customer agreement. The Storm has a SurePress touch screen with tactile feedback so the soft buttons feel more like hardware keys when pressed. Since the BlackBerry Storm is a touch screen device, many people have pegged it as a competitor for the iPhone. In fact, if you watch any of the commercials or demos of the Storm,... Read more...

AMD is revealing a new technology brand today to highlight some recent advances made in the company's stream and GPU computing initiatives. The new brand is aptly named ATI Stream.ATI Stream is essentially a amalgamation of all of ATI's previous initiatives like Close To Metal (CTM), Compute Abstraction Layer (CAL), and Brook+ (AMD’s modified Brook open source compiler), encompassed under a single brand. The goal, as NVIDIA has done to some degree with CUDA and PhysX, is to not only take ATI Stream mainstream, but to also better serve the enterprise and HPC spaces with easier access and standardized programming tools.     ... Generally speaking, many travelers, especially business travelers, are somewhat tech savvy. To cater to this audience, some hotels are teaming with tech companies to keep pace with their gadget-obsessed guests.Sheraton, for example, teamed with Microsoft to create its new Link@Sheraton lounges where guests can surf the Internet, email loved ones, review local favorite attractions, and print boarding passes. The PCs in these lounges have Web cams and Microsoft applications that walk guests through recording and sending a video clip. In turn, Microsoft hopes to encourage users to try a task they wouldn’t attempt at home, such as using a Web cam to say goodnight to the kiddos back home. Westin... Read more...

Many techs will agree: antivirus programs can be a hassle. Mostly, the issues tend to stem from slower performance and similar issues that result from using an antivirus program. Still, it’s a bit of a lesser of two evils deal: you can risk getting a virus, or you can deal with lags in performance. Usually, you can count on well-known antivirus programs to only touch malicious files, but this isn’t always the case.AVG, a free antivirus scanner, recently created problems for some of its users when it mistook user32.dll, a critical Windows component, for a container for the Trojan Horses PSW.Banker4.APSA or Generic9TBN. When the scanner activated, it assumed this critical file was a virus and deleted... Read more...

It was rumored earlier that AT&T and Apple were in discussions over tethering. And at the Web 2.0 Summit, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph De La Vega indicated in an interview with Michael Arrington that an official, AT&T sanctioned method of tethering (using the iPhone as a 3G modem) is on the coming "soon." There are already some tethering apps for jailbroken phones, such as PDANet, but nothing you can download from the App Store, at least not since NetShare was pulled from the store. It's unclear when AT&T will roll out the tethering service; some point in 2009 is the only vague indication given. Would that mean that both PDANet (denied from the start) and NetShare would be allowed... Read more...

Well, Wal-Mart may be having trouble keeping up with iTunes as far as being the top music retailer, but it doesn't have iTunes as a competitor among video games. Thus, we are where we are ...eMarketer.com conducted a survey of 2,000 gamers aged 12 to 54, dubbed "Are You Game?" It found that Wal-Mart was the most visited retailer for video games, with Best Buy and GameStop tied for second. The margin was 8%, a pretty large margin, as you can see below. After those three comes Target, and then Circuit City and Amazon, tied. Yes, the "I'm closing 155 stores" Circuit City, you've got it; still decently high in the rankings. So, based on this, not only is Wal-Mart the world's biggest... Windows PC owners have been able to enjoy Netflix's Watch Instantly movie and TV streaming service since January 2007. The service even significantly expanded the quantity and quality of its streaming content recently by partnering with CBS Television Network, Disney-ABC Television Group, and Starz Entertainment. But Netflix customers who own Macs have been all but left out in the cold. The Netflix Watch Instantly service currently doesn't work on Macs. The only way a Mac user could use the service would be to use in on a Windows partition running Boot Camp. But this is all about to change, thanks to none other than Microsoft... Adapters, cables, and chargers are just a few of the many things that accompany us on our travels. Inevitably, we end up with a tangled mess of cords. If iSuppli is correct, however, the days of untangling cords before we can connect our iPod to the car is coming to an end. For years, consumers have demanded better connectivity between our car’s audio system and our portable media players, especially our iPods. Auto makers are getting the message. In fact, 58% of car models released in 2009 are expected to offer an iPod connectivity feature option. For those of you who prefer a different type of fruit, automakers are expected to offer USB options on 1/3 of available options next year. “The... Read more...

How do you roll out computer access to 1.8 million students at $70 per seat? The answer: Virtualization. The Indian state of Andhra Pradesh is undertaking a "massive 5,000-school educational computing initiative" to build computer labs and give computer access to almost two million Indian children. But instead of requiring one computer per user, the system being put in place, supplied by NComputing, will allow up to seven users simultaneous access to a single computer.  Credit: NComputingGet those images of a bunch of kids crowded around a single keyboard and display out of your heads--that's not how this system works. It's hardly a game-changer, but it's pretty cool. Anyone who's looked at the comments on YouTube posts know that they are certainly not works of literary art. Well, if you heard your comment read back to you, would you still post it, with all its grammar and spelling errors? Perhaps not. YouTube has added an audio preview feature to its comments. They didn't publicize it, so we only happened to notice it as we were going to comment on a video myself (which we don't do that often). You can see it below. Our guess is, the lack of publicity is because: they didn't think of it themselves. As a friend of ours pointed out, a couple of weeks ago, xkcd posted a strip called "Listen to Yourself" (below)... Researchers are planning to conduct an experiment at the University of Reading to see if humans can be fooled into thinking they are talking with another human, when in fact they will be talking with a machine. The experiment is a homage to mathematician, logician and cryptographer Alan Turning, who originally proposed the Turing Test, in which a human judge engages in a natural language conversation with one human and one machine, each of which try to appear human; if the judge cannot reliably tell which is which, then the machine is said to pass the test."Can machines think? That was the question posed by the great mathematician Alan Turing. Half a century later six computers are about to converse... Read more...

Renew a vehicle plate and registration
Renewing your vehicle plate and registration (also referred to as renewing your tabs) is an annual requirement in Michigan. Typically, a plate will expire on the vehicle owner’s birthday. The Secretary of State usually mails a renewal notice 45 days prior to this date, so vehicle owners can choose to renew online, by mail, by self-service station or in a branch office. You can renew a plate up to 6 months early. Follow the instructions below to begin the vehicle plate and registration renewal process.
To complete this service, you must meet certain eligibility requirements.
You will need the plate number of the vehicle you wish to renew and a credit card or branded debit card.
Please note: If your insurance carrier does not participate in Electronic Insurance Verification (EIV), you will not be able to renew online or on a self-service station.
Please note: If your insurance carrier does not participate in Electronic Verification (EIV), you will not be able to renew online or on a self-service station.
This option is only available when renewing.
Locate the renewal notice that the Secretary of State mailed to you. Follow the steps outlined in the renewal notice and return via mail.
After renewing, place the new vehicle registration tab on your license plate. Tab placement will vary according to plate type.
Fees vary by vehicle type and weight. If renewing online or via self-service station, the fees will be outlined at the time of purchase. The renewal notice lists the fee associated with renewal.
If you do not have your renewal notice, you may use the renewal fee calculator to compute your fee.
