I woke up early that day, as I did on that day every year. It was not my birthday, and it was not a holiday, but to me — a young and very social girl from Long Island about to enter the sixth grade — it was a much more exciting tradition. It was the day I would go shopping for my back-to-school wardrobe. I can't quite remember all of the items purchased during these yearly shopping excursions, but a few will always stand out in my mind. I remember the dark blue denim jeans covered with red fuzzy ladybugs that I wore on the first day of first grade, thrilled beyond belief that Dana Silfen, the most popular girl in school, was wearing the same ones. The gold inside-out shirt and Huckapoo blouse that I proudly wore to my fourth-grade picture, and the crème de la crème, the blue suede clogs that laced up the front with what I thought at age ten was a high heel.
This year's standout item was quite a simple one. As I tried on the brown corduroy suit that my mother had suggested I choose for the Jewish holidays, which went perfectly with the brown suede shoes that we had just purchased at the shoe store, the saleswomen approached us with a pair of nude sheer stockings. I couldn't believe my eyes; they were actual stockings! They weren't the thick tights by Danskin or Trim-fit that I had been wearing since birth, but real pantyhose: the same kind that I had watched my mother and two older sisters put on every time they wore a dress or a skirt. The kind that you have to sit down on the edge of the bed to place on, as you cautiously roll them on one leg at a time, first over your toes, then your ankles and legs, and then wiggle into them, careful not to cause any runs. I looked up at my mother, who didn't approve of countless things like lip gloss and pierced ears, and crossed my fingers as I asked, "Oh Mommy, can I please have them?" To my surprise she agreed.
As we drove home, a smile sat frozen on my face. I was starting the sixth grade, the oldest grade in my school, and I was allowed to wear stockings. I felt remarkably grown up and I couldn't be happier about it.
We pulled up to my house and I hurried inside to unpack and try on my things before my dad came home for his annual fashion show. My mother had run back out to do an errand and I was so absorbed in my new clothes that I barely heard the phone ring. The man on the other end asked, "Is your mother home?" I said no. And he said, "I am sorry but your father has been in an accident. Please have your mother call here as soon as she gets home."
Two days later I again woke up early and began to dress. I sat at the end of my bed and put on my new stockings, one leg at a time: first over my toes, then over my ankles and my legs. I then wiggled into them very cautiously to avoid getting my first run. As I climbed into the black limousine to go to my father's funeral, I wished with all my heart that I was a kid again, and that changing back into my tights was all that it would take.

A TIKTOK video shows an older man groping a woman aboard a Spirit Airlines flight - and the teen says no one intervened.
"The man was like 50-60s and I was so uncomfy @spiritairlines #fyp#foryou #harassmentawareness," read the video's caption, which was posted to TikTok.
"On my flight to California the man behind kept touching my arms and boobs," the video started.
The video shows the woman sitting in the window seat leaning back when she moves to show the man's hand grasping for air between the seat gap.
Posted on Wednesday night by the user @ mobilesushibar , the woman says she showed the video to Spirit flight attendants and those in her proximity, only to be ignored.
"And when I confronted him and showed the video to everyone around me and the flight attendants I was told to sit down and stay quiet 😐," the video narrated. "F you spirit airlines."
The poster got plenty of supportive messages following the video, with people urging she file a suit against Spirit.
"I’d yell and scream and make a scene, everyone needs to know," wrote one user.
"[T]hey told me to sit down and be quiet, and my mom told me the same," she added.
"@spiritairlines what are you going to do about this?!? This is APPALLING!!!" wrote another commenter.
The video has been watched over 810,000 times and has over 255,000 likes and comments since it was posted two days ago.
In a subsequent set of videos, the woman said she boarded the plane at 6AM with her family and sat in separate seats.
She said she then switched with a woman who wanted the aisle seat.
She said she was getting settled and began reading a book when she "felt a slight tough like something was caressing me right here"
"I wonder what this feeling could be, it was really subtle, and I reached my hand over and touched his finger tips," she continued.
She then texted her sister to tell her that she was being groped. "I thought it would stop there because he knows that I know that he was touching me because I touched his fingertips."
After some time passed and she resumed the previous position so she can read, "it happened again, so this is when I was like I can tell he's trying to reach for my boobs."
"So I have to sit there through an hour of harassment," she added to get video of him to show the flight attendants.
"He was trying to deny it," she said after showing them the video "and I was told to please calm down, sit down, be quiet."
"That made me really upset that no one cared that I was going through that for so long."
"The fact that I had to sit there and collect evidence for nothing speaks volumes."
