Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: A leg lover's delight from 1956! Full-fashioned seamed stockings were considered the "proper" fashion choice in hosiery for women at that time. But Hanes and other brands of seamless stockings were making significant gains in market share at that time, especially with younger women.

"ElliHH" and her husband have been very generous over the years sharing their candid shots of Elli, many in public places, wearing such alluring hosiery and stiletto high heels. Certainly there isn't any doubt that she is sophisticated, elegant and is well aware of the response she elicits from admiring leg men and envious women.
Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: "Sex Kitten" Brigette Bardot is posed rather provocatively here. Under closer examination, she's wearing fully-fashioned seamed stockings. There are quite a few promotional photos of Miss Bardot in bare feet but this is one of the very few I have seen where those tell-tale reinforced heels indicated she's wearing nylon stockings. Thanks to Colleen for posting this image. Her collection of female movie stars here on Flickr is absolutely fabulous.
Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: Here is an excellent example of the "Point Heel" style of full-fashioned stocking, which was not as common in the USA as the squared-off top Cuban heel stocking was, but was in Europe. And in their day, there was no finer example than the Aristoc "Harmony Point". I'm quite fortunate to own a rather large collection of Harmony Points, which can be seen in my Album "493 Pairs of Sexy Shoes and Leggy Views." If you click on the photo and see the full size version, I draw your attention to the "finishing marks", the two faint lines at the calf near the seam. True full-fashioned hosiery features these as they were designed into the stocking for a better fit at the calf. And it goes without saying that nothing showcases off a pair of stunning gams than black seamed stockings and red patent stiletto heels. Miss Legs, I salute you!
Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: Here is a perfect example of the black contrasting seam effect on Miss Scott's legs. The eye is drawn to her shapely calves and the slimming effect at her ankles. She is almost certainly is wearing stockings made of Nylon, which came back into production a few years after the end of WW2. The short squared-off Cuban heel reinforcement of her stockings is hardly visible, which was typical of the manufacturing process of that time. The length of the heel reinforcement was extended over the next few years as well as its shape. One brand called it the "Empire Heel" after the tiered top of the Empire State Building in New York City. Of note is that Secrets in Lace has brought back this style of vintage 1940s heel in a new line of retro nylon stockings made in the USA on the last operating Reading Machines at the former Magnolia Hosiery Company in Mississippi. A special thanks to Colleen O'Eris whose collection of over 10,000 photos of female movie actresses is well worth a visit.
Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: A fabulous set of what were referred to in the women's hosiery industry as "Novelty Heels". These are just a few examples of the more fanciful examples in contrasting colors or with applied flocking (2nd from right) that were intended for dressy occasions or for just capturing the eye of the beholder. The contrasting heel and foot reinforcement have made a modern comeback from retailers like Secrets in Lace and manufacturers like Gio, but there are very few operating Reading full-fashioned hosiery machines left in the world, so it is indeed a great day when a find like these appears on eBay. My personal collection of vintage hosiery includes many examples of the novelty heel stockings. Finding vintage hosiery leg displays like those seen here are a great way to decorate a vintage collection.
Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: An enticing and alluring example of what the hosiery industry referred to as "novelty heels" back in the 1950s. As seamless stockings were beginning to gain market share, the manufacturers of full-fashioned stockings looked to adding design enhancements to the standard Cuban heel. In addition to the contrasting black heel (which also was made in navy blue and dark brown), this style added additional "leg appeal". For the more fashion traditionalist woman, these would be worn with more formal attire and special events. While these are true vintage, a somewhat similar and contemporary reproduction is called the "Manhattan Heel". I'm fortunate to have started collecting this style and have a collection of them on hosiery display mannequins in my home museum. I'll have to get an updated photo or two and add them to my photostream. Grateful appreciation to "Lipstix06" for allowing me to share her exquisite taste (and gorgeous legs and feet) in hosiery with you. NOTE: The next example below is from a catalog that offered other versions of the novelty heel to its customers.
Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: Leg Allure - 1954 Style! The "novelty heel" designs pictured here were two-fold in purpose. The seamless stocking which was being heavily promoted post-World War 2 by the new Hanes Hosiery brand, was beginning to gain wider mass market acceptance. Indeed, if you ever spot an old episode of I Love Lucy, you'll may be able to notice that Lucy is wearing seamless stockings and at times, even the reinforced heel is in view. The other purpose was much more simple in motive. Men enjoyed the visual appeal of a woman's leg and these very fancy and eye catching designs left no doubt that the wearer wanted her legs to get attention. Especially if the woman was wearing these with the brand new "backless mule" called the Spring-o-lator. In the 1954 film "Asphalt Jungle", studio promo photos of a young Marilyn Monroe have her wearing a pair outlined heel fully fashioned nylons similar to Number 4 in the lower left corner with her strappy high heeled sandals. Finding such examples of these stockings today is almost like the search for the Holy Grail. Smaller sizes are can be found on eBay. Secrets In Lace just began to offer a black outline on a nude heel style similar to Number 6 in the lower box.

Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: Marilyn Monroe is seen wearing black Cuban heel nylon stockings in a promo photo for the movie "Bus Stop" (1956). Yet I have never seen any clip from the movie where the back of her legs are shown, revealing this style of hosiery. She did wear fishnet stocking with her cabaret costume and there are many delightful photos of her posing in them. By George, I've got an idea! A new gallery featuring fishnet stockings. BRILLIANT

Ju Elle is modeling Full Fashioned Point Heel nylons by Gerbe of France. They're a bit expensive but you can trust their quality and therefore, well worth it! And that beige corselet with black lace trim is stunning.
Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: This Classic Retro Pin Up by Mark Lacy features all the proper accoutrements from the 1950-60s. Waist nipper garter belt, sheer over the elbow opera gloves, strapless bra and sheer panties, in black naturally, plus black patent pumps and Full Fashioned seamed stockings with the Cuban heel. Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: True fully-fashioned nylon stockings have a reinforcement that goes from the back of the heel to the toes. These are an example of the narrow sole reinforcement, common among American-made FF nylons, which seems to have its fair share of admirers.

Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: Fully-fashioned stockings were made with dark seams as well as the "self-seam" which matched the tint of the stocking. Dark seams made the legs look thinner and also drew a bit more attention. These have a very flattering darker toned heel but I believe that is just a result of the dye-bath and not of a darker colored "contrast heel".
Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: A rather interesting photo of Joan Crawford apparently demonstrating the sheerness of nylon stockings. And a rather varied collection of these fully-fashioned seamed stockings are presented here. There are the more common Cuban heeled nylons as well as the contrasting black heel pair and even a pair of nude heel (but still with a seam) stockings with just the toe reinforcement. I'm going to take a wild guess (I did a little research) and say that this photo is from the early 1950s. The hairstyle and her facial features are similar to other photos of her at that time. But I am certain there must be something more about this image that should be told.
Robyn Michaels - Dear Diary says: One must ALWAYS be careful to watch where they are walking while admiring a lovely pair of legs adorned with seamed nylon stockings. This eye-catching view probably occurred after tripping and falling due to the mesmerizing effect such hosiery has on a man. And that is not the way to catch the attention and leave a positive impression on the woman wearing these glamorous Point Heel nylons.
