When studios began producing high-quality and high-concept teen shows, they were widely popular.
A new golden era of television reared its head at the start of the 2010s. Studios began producing more high-concept teen shows, aiming to keep viewers tuned to their networks or binge-watching on their streaming services. With increased budgets, their quality turned more cinematic. Soon enough, teen television gained the critical acclaim that it had been lacking.
The 2000s had a penchant for glamorizing controversial topics like sex and substance abuse. The shows of the new era took to discussing them in a more mature, raw fashion, all while keeping those elements that make teen television so appealing to the public.
Cassandra Clare's fantasy book series, The Mortal Instruments, was adapted into a three-season show for ABC's young adult network, Freeform. Shadowhunters centers on Clary Fray. Clay is a young New Yorker who discovers she's a human-angel hybrid on her eighteenth birthday.
Shadowhunters ran for 55 episodes from early 2016 to mid-2019. It starred Arrow 's Kate McNamara as Clary, Dominic Sherwood as Jace, and Glee 's Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Shadowhunters won a GLAAD Award and multiple Teen Choice Awards.
The CW broadcasted The 100 , a post-apocalyptic teen drama. The 100 followed a group of young adults, who returned to Earth to check on its conditions and must survive on the planet. An adaptation of the eponymous novel series by Kass Morgan, The 100 ran for exactly 100 episodes divided into seven seasons.
The 100 had a large ensemble cast that included Australian actors Eliza Taylor and Bob Morley as Clarke and Bellamy, Thomas McDonnell as Finn, and Octavia Blake as Marie. MTV's Teen Wolf follows a group of teenagers with supernatural powers, combatting the evil forces trying to wreak havoc in Beacon Hills. Teen Wolf was loosely based on the 1985 film of the same name starring Michael J. Fox. Teen Wolf ran for six seasons from 2011 to 2017.
Initially a run-of-the-mill supernatural teen drama, Teen Wolf slowly took on a darker tone. It often borrowed from the horror genre . Teen Wolf was one of the most popular teen shows during its time on air. It also won various fan-voted awards for its standout ensemble cast, which included Dylan O'Brien, Crystal Reed, and Tyler Hoechlin.
A darker take on the '90s classic, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, was Netflix's horror teen show Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. It focuses on Kiernan Shipka as half-witch Sabrina Spellman as she tries to balance everyday life with her witchcraft education. Chilling Adventures consists of 35 episodes and a Christmas special.
Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina was praised for its macabre tone and visuals, which gave it an edge when compared with other contemporary teen shows. After Chilling Adventures was canceled in mid-2020, Shipka reprised her role in a crossover episode with The CW's Riverdale for the sixth season.
Stranger Things received an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and viewers alike. Stranger Things earned over 30 Primetime Emmy nominations as of 2020. The sci-fi drama borrows aesthetics and horror tropes from the '80s to illustrate the strange events taking place in Hawkins, Indiana.
Strangers Things has a prolific adult cast, which includes Winona Ryder and David Harbour. Stranger Things is known for launching the careers of young talents like Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard. Netflix's Sex Education mainly follows Otis (Asa Butterfield). Otis is at Moordale Secondary, and his mother is a sex therapist. After befriending and joining forces with a girl in his class called Maeve, they establish their own sex therapy consultation to help others at school.

Anne With An E was praised for its discussion of childhood trauma and social issues. The themes included gender inequality and the mistreatment of Canadian Indigenous people. Anne won Best Drama Series at the Canadian Screen Awards for two consecutive years before being canceled in late 2019.
Arguably the most popular teen series of the early 2010s, Pretty Little Liars was loosely based on Sara Shepard's series of novels of the same name. Pretty Little Liars focuses on four girls, coping with the disappearance of their best friend, Alison. They begin receiving threatening texts from an anonymous entity.

One special was co-written by actress Hunter Schafer, who also stars as Rue's love interest, Jules. Euphoria is also known for its superb score and soundtrack. The '90s was a golden age. Shows began featuring adolescents and their struggles, introducing many young actors to overnight stardom.
The 1990s was a golden decade. The '90s was full of daring fashion statements and some of the best pop music ever produced. It was also the decade when teenagers took center stage, set all trends, and became the most powerful demographic in the household.
Acknowledging their potential, television networks began producing shows portraying adolescents. Shows mainly featured teenage struggles with romance, friendships, and school, aiming to gain dedicated viewers in the process. Multiple teen-oriented genres would spawn thereafter, changing television forever and introducing many young actors to overnight stardom.
In 1998, The WB network premiered one of its most popular shows, Dawson's Creek . Dawson's Creek ran for six seasons. It starred James Van Der Beek as the title character, Dawson Leery, and Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams as his love interests and friends.
Dawson's Creek was both a commercial and critical success, mostly attributed to the ensemble cast and showrunner Kevin Williamson. Williamson had driven interest to Dawson's Creek after his success writing the classic slasher film , Scream . Its popularity spawned a short-lived spin-off called Young Americans , with Dawson's friend, Will Krudski, serving as the main character.
My So-Called Life follows fifteen-year-old Angela Chase, played by Claire Danes, and her friends as they discover the ups and downs of adolescence in the mid-1990s. It also starred Jared Leto as Angela's on-and-off boyfriend, Jordan. A.J. Langer and Wilson Cruz played Rayanne and Rickie, Angela's best friends.

Despite premiering in the late 1990s, Freaks & Geeks is set in suburban Detroit during the 1980s. Freaks & Geeks centers around Linda Cardellini as Lindsay Weir and John Francis Daley as her younger brother, Sam. They befriend their schools' 'freaks' and 'geeks'.
A joint project between comedians Paul Feig and Judd Apatow, Freaks & Geeks received universal acclaim upon release and has become a cult classic over the years. It launched the careers of many members of its young ensemble cast, which includes James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segel.
Based on the Kristy Swanson movie of the same name, Buffy The Vampire Slayer was created by Avengers director, Joss Whedon. Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as Buffy Summers. Buffy ran for seven seasons on The WB and UPN, and spawned a spin-off led by David Boreanaz as the vampire detective, Angel.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer is often considered the best supernatural teen show of all time. During its broadcast, Buffy The Vampire Slayer was nominated for ten Emmy Awards, winning two for its makeup and score.
Blossom follows Mayim Bialik, a teenager learning to adjust to life with her father and elder brothers after her mother abandons them. Blossom ran for a little over a hundred episodes on NBC, starting in 1991 and ending in 1995 after five seasons.
After its first run, Blossom 's popularity increased when it was syndicated to other local and international networks, gaining a significant viewership in the United Kingdom. Blossom is known for its multiple guest appearances, which include Kermit the Frog, David Arquette and Hugh Hefner.
In 1993, ABC premiered one of the best sitcoms of the '90s, Boy Meets World . Boy Meets World follows Cory Matthews through school, as he learns various life lessons. Ben Savage played the main role, with Danielle Fishel and Rider Strong joining the teen cast as Cory's friends.
Boy Meets World ran for seven highly successful seasons, ending in 2000 and being syndicated shortly after its broadcast. Twelve years later, Disney Channel would produce a sequel, Girl Meets World , focusing on Cory and Topanga's daughter, Riley, and her best friend, Maya.
After her breakout role in Clarissa Explains It All , Melissa Joan Hart went on to star as Sabrina Spellman in ABC's Sabrina The Teenage Witch . Sabrina focuses on Sabrina's misadventures as a novice witch, and her relationships with her friends, her cat/mentor Salem, and her two long-lived aunts, Hilda and Zelda.
The supernatural sitcom premiered in 1996 and ran for seven seasons. Aside from three additional television films, Sabrina The Teenage Witch also spawned an animated series, where Hart's younger sister voiced Sabrina. And a dark fantasy Netflix series, The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina .
Will Smith gained universal recognition when he played a fictionalized version of himself on NBC's hit sitcom, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air . Set in the wealthy neighborhood of Bel-Air, Fresh Prince follows street-smart Will as he moves into his Aunt and Uncle's mansion and constantly clashes with those around him.
