The world's coolest mother managed to capture on camera the moment she surprised her 14-year-old daughter, who came out as transgender years before, with her first dose of hormone therapy.
"Today after waiting 2 1/2 years she finally got her estrogen," Erica Maison wrote. "I picked it up while she was in school so she had no idea. We have been waiting months for the readiness letter to be finalized and sent to Chicago, so had no idea on a timeline of when it would actually happen. Sorry I had to stop recording because we were both blubbering sobbing fools. September 24 is a day I will remember for the rest of my life."
Today, in an interview with Buzzfeed , Erica said that Corey has always loved high heels and makeup, but it wasn't until they came across a video of YouTube star Jazz Jennings that everything began to make sense.
They immediately booked an appointment with the gender clinic at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where Corey received a puberty suppressing implant. The family had been waiting for an OK from her team of doctors to start hormone therapy, and the second she turned 14, they got the go-ahead.

“I think one of the biggest issues with our society today is that people just don’t understand what being transgender actually means," she told the website. "I want people to watch this video, and see the raw emotion of a transgender child that can finally live her life the way she feels inside. I want people to see this, because maybe it will open their eyes. Open their eyes to anyone who’s different. Maybe make them realize that people who are transgender are people just like them, but also people that are at much higher risk for violence and ridicule, over something they had no choice in. I promise you that no child wants to be made fun of, no child ever wants to be hurt, or picked on. No child would ever choose to be transgender, it is 100% how they are born.”
Not only is this video worth watching again, it's worth sending to all of your friends/family/that TA who won't stop emailing you about missing assignments, because everyone needs to see it.
You might as well watch some other awesome videos while you're at it:

Corey Maison, a 14-year-old trans teen from Detroit, finally received what she’s been waiting more than two years for — estrogen hormones. It was a life-changing surprise from her supportive mother, Erica, who “picked it up while she was in school,” as she wrote on YouTube (where the comments have been disabled, because trolls are terrible people). “We have been waiting months for the readiness letter to be finalized and sent to Chicago,” Erica continued “so [we] had no idea on a timeline of when it would actually happen.”
“She squeezed me, and I stopped the camera so I could hug her back. Neither of us let go for what seemed like an eternity… We were both crying and shaking. She literally took my breath away, as she has never given me a hug like that before. I have never felt so much love from her than that moment. It was a mixture of pure joy and relief from us both. It hasn’t been easy for Corey. She had to leave school in the fifth grade because she was being bullied so much, and Erica began homeschooling her. Corey, who dressed in heels and skirts when she was young, discovered her true self at 11 years old while watching a video of transgender YouTube star Jazz Jennings , at which point she said, “Mom, I’m just like her, I AM a girl.”

DEAR DEIDRE: I WENT home with a woman I met in a club. When she pulled off her clothes I was staggered to see that “she” had all the male goods down below.
It was a massive surprise but I still had a great time in bed.
I’m a man of 46 and I’ve always been straight. I was married for 24 years before getting divorced but I never had any complaints, at least not about my performance in bed.
An old mate got in touch and suggested we have a night out. We started off in a pub in the town and then he suggested this gay club he knows.
I wasn’t keen but he told me that people of all kinds turned up and there’s a really great atmosphere there.
I agreed and I had to admit he was right. The whole place was buzzing, the music was great and the vibe was amazing. I started really enjoying myself.
This girl started dancing with me. She looked about 35 with a beautiful smile and huge come-to-bed eyes. Then she asked me to buy her a drink and I knew I was in with a chance.
The girl asked me back to her flat — my mate had already gone home. We jumped in a cab and as soon as we got through her door she was pulling my clothes off and pushing me down on her bed.
She pulled down her undies and that’s when I saw what she had underneath. She was hung like a donkey but made me feel king of the world.
She woke me the next morning and gave me a kiss and a cup of tea. We swapped numbers and then I went home.
Now she texts all the time and says, “Let’s meet again.”
I’m tempted, but what does that say about me? After all these years straight, am I now turning gay?
DEIDRE SAYS: It isn’t as simple as that. Our sexual orientation is more fluid than many believe.
It’s not unusual for a man or a woman who has long identified as straight to later find love with a same-sex partner.
In this case you were attracted to someone apparently female but whom you later discovered had male genitalia – I’m guessing either a cross-dresser or transsexual.
It was, perhaps, the surprise and confusion you felt that proved, at least in part, such a turn-on for you.
If you’re planning on taking it further, why not give it a go? As with any new partner, just take it a step at a time and do practise safe sex.

Corey Maison is happy now, but fifth grade was a nightmare for her. When she was younger, Corey was bullied by her classmates to the point where one even told her that if she killed herself, no one would care. At 14, though, Corey found happiness and new friends all because her family and her new school accept her as a transgender girl.
In a now-viral video , Corey is posted in the girls’ bathroom at her new school, holding up note cards that track her transition from bullied and sad to happy and glowing.
This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.
Corey shows in her video that she never fit in with her peers when she was younger. She was shunned by girls and teased by boys, and even laughed at by adults later on.
“I felt so stupid. Like a freak,” Corey’s notes say. “Like a misfit.”
Eventually, the bullying got so bad that her parents pulled her out of public school and opted to home school her instead.
That’s when Corey’s mom did something that changed everything.
“One day my mom told me to come watch something online,” the video says. "It was a documentary about a girl named Jazz Jennings . She was a beautiful girl...that had been born a boy!! I said to my mom, ‘OMG, I’m just like her, I AM a girl!!’”
That’s when Corey realized that there was nothing wrong with her, she’s transgender. At 14, Corey started taking hormones to transition into a female, a day she described as the best of her life.
Now, Corey is happy and back in public school. This time, though, she’s at a school where her peers and teachers accept her. She plays on the girls’ soccer team and uses the girls’ bathroom , just as she should.
This acceptance is so important. Though 41% of transgender people will attempt suicide at some point in their lives, we know that support and love from their community can help prevent that. Even though Corey overcame a lot at a young age, she’s found happiness and love from those around her. That's the message that Corey passes along to other transgender kids who might see the video: someday it will get better and you can live your best life as your true self, just like Corey is doing now.
