Mom (looking nervous): “Let’s talk about this when we get home...”
Daughter: “But why? And why are Galactigirls so great if they’re basically prostitutes?”
Mom: “Keep your voice down, please” (looking around to see if anyone is listening)
Daughter (finally speaking low): "OK, OK, jeez calm down! Our teacher told us that women are just as good as men, and that Galactigirls are taking us back to old times when women had no rights and were just used for their bodies... I'm not sure I agree, but it's confusing.”
Mom (looking serious): “Your teacher needs to be more careful what she says... a LOT more careful... but she’s not necessarily WRONG.”
Daughter (looking exasperated): “But Mom, you told me to say how I feel...”
Mom: “It’s just not as simple as your teacher said. And some things can get you in trouble if you say them out loud...”
Daughter (interrupting): “...Can you explain the not simple part?”
Mom (taking a deep breath): “Sure... early in this century, feminists and various other advocates decided that the gender roles relegated women them to a lesser status than men. All distinctions between male and female were systematically blurred, minimized or removed in order to radically reduce and destroy traditional barriers to women pursuing their happiness...”
Daughter (interrupting): “And that was good, right?”
Mom (patiently): “Like most such efforts, it was partly good and partly not. I mean it sounds good to a lot of people, but they tend not to think about what gets lost.”
Mom: “The preciousness of femininity... The idea that equal value doesn't mean SAME, and that everyone being the SAME is not a good thing... the inability to see the irony that they would tolerate anything and anyone except those they deemed "intolerant." The way they tossed out reason and evidence and education in favor of received dogma. They couldn't see or didn't care that their ideas would lead directly to authoritarianism..."
Daughter: “Wait, now ** I’m ** getting lost, what does this have to do with Galactigirls?”
Mom: "Well, about 20 years ago, we made contact with an alien race...."
Daughter (interrupting): "We don't call them 'race,' Mom, that's racist."
Mom (sighing): "An alien species, then..."
Daughter: (interrupting again): "And we don't call them 'aliens,' that's racist, too."
Mom (getting frustrated): "Do you want to hear this, or not?"
Daughter: "Yes, yes... but those terms are racist, I'm just saying..."
Mom (with a heavy sigh): "So we made contact with.... extra terrestrials... and after we introduced ourselves, these ETs announced that we were too warlike and too unpredictable. That we'd have to be exterminated so we didn't contaminate the galaxy..."
Daughter: "Yeah we heard about this. Our white, male-dominated, oppressive patriarchy was considered a failure..."
Mom: "...and of course the aliens were a lot more advanced technologically than we were, so it looked like we had no hope.. But then a funny thing happened. One of the... ETs... met the daughter of one of our negotiators. And he fell in love with her..."
Daughter: "Did SHE fall in love with HIM?"
Mom: "... I don't know if she loved the ET or not... But over time, it was decided that human females were worth keeping, not destroying. The ETs offered humanity the chance to survive if we would provide them with... companionship."
Daughter (laughing out loud): "Just call it what it is, Mom. It's sex, right?"
Mom (hissed whisper as others nearby notice the conversation): "Keep your voice down! Yes, it's sex."
Daughter (looking thoughtful): "Sooooo... being a pretty girl that a guy wants can save the planet? With sex? Alien sex?"
Mom (with another sigh): "The short answer is yes, it can. Our leaders agreed to supply the aliens with beautiful young women. The aliens agreed to let us keep working on our society. Our leaders immediately started developing the Galactigirl program. The Galactigirls meet the... um... needs... of the ETs, AND they present a polished, elegant face to other beings we meet as we explore..."
Daughter (interrupting again): "...So the Galactigirls are not JUST for sex. They also explore?"
Mom (nodding): "Galactigirls are literally our only government presence in space beyond our Solar System. They explore, perform science experiments, protect people, solve disputes, meet new ETs, conduct Earth's diplomacy..."
Daughter: "It sounds like Galactigirls should be our leaders!"
Mom (smiling): "Maybe so. The are quite a talented group of young women, from what I hear... but do you see the irony of everyone celebrating the Galactigirls for their traditional beauty and sexuality after the blurring and minimizing of gender roles for so long? What would your teacher say about Galactigirls being our leaders?"
Daughter: "I don't know. You're right, Mom. It doesn't sound simple. Just because Galactigirls have to use their bodies to protect the planet, doesn't mean I want to be treated like a whore or something. You know?"
Mom: "Me, either. What I think is that the two choices shouldn't be mutually exclusive. You mentioned that you wanted to be a Galactigirl. Do you still want to be one?"
Daughter: "I don't know. Are the ETs... you know.. hot? (laughs and then continues) "What would you think if I became a Galactigirl?"
Mom: "I'd be proud of you. And terrified... Come on, let's get home..."
Mom: "You'll never be a Galactigirl if you skip dance and piano lessons..."
