Oct. 26—Following an Oct. 1 road loss against Talihina, a handful of members of the Hulbert Riders football team allegedly received sexual favors from a female classmate while they returned home on a school bus.
On the way to the game, two "water girls" rode the bus with the team, but on the way home, one of the girls returned with her parents, leaving the other on the bus with the team. The students involved have been "severely" disciplined, according to Hulbert Public Schools Superintendent Jolyn Choate, who was made aware of the situation on Monday, Oct. 4.
"I can confirm the district has a code of conduct that outlines rules, expectations and discipline. When an incident occurs, we follow the process outlined in our Board Approved Handbook," wrote Choate in a statement.
When the incident took place, two assistant coaches were sitting at the front of the bus, which took off at 10 p.m. in what would be a two-hour ride in the dark.
On Oct. 5, Choate met with the football team to decide on the future of the season. Coach Ty Pilgrim recommended canceling the rest of the teams' games, and by Oct. 6, he had offered his letter of resignation, though Choate apparently did not ask for it.
Assistant coach Kyle Deason agreed to step up and act as head coach if the rest of the student-athletes wanted to continue to play.
"I didn't want to hold all the students who are working on bettering themselves to not play because of the decisions that their peers had made," said Choate.
According to Choate, who consulted with HPS Principal Chad Botts, schools are required to have a minimum of 14 students to maintain a football team. After the involved students were removed, the team was left with 15 eligible players. With this in mind, HPS continued to play week-by-week.
On Oct. 22, HPS announced it would cancel its game against Gore due to injuries. While the number of athletes with injuries was not disclosed, because Hulbert is operating on a 15-man roster, only two members of the team would have to be injured to cancel a game.
Since the incident took place, Hulbert has played against Porter and Colcord. The school has two more games on its schedule against Warner and Central in Sallisaw.

THE parents of an Australian boy are horrified after their son was ‘instructed’ to perform a sex act on another disabled student on a school bus, according to ABC’s 7.30.
THE parents of a disabled Melbourne teenager are seeking legal advice after their 16-year-old son was allegedly instructed to perform a sex act on another disabled student on a school bus.
ABC’s 7.30 reports the alleged incident went unnoticed by the Crown Coaches bus driver, which has the contract for all special school buses in Melbourne.
It follows an incident last month when a child with special needs was allegedly forgotten during school drop-off and spent the day alone in a bus in 31C heat.
Jalen Aughterson’s parents told 7.30 their son was travelling to school on a Crown Coaches service with another boy, who suffers Down Syndrome, in May when the alleged incident occurred.
It’s alleged the other boy took Jalen’s phone and filmed a selfie-style video of him repeatedly encouraging Jalen, who has an IQ of under 50, to give him oral sex on the bus.
The student’s genitals were exposed during the video, 7.30 reported.
“I took it to Shane and I said, ‘There is something horribly wrong here’,” Jalen’s mother Leanne told 7.30.
“The boy in question grabbed Jalen’s phone and then flicked it to video and filmed himself convincing Jaylen to go down on him or whatever the right terminology is.”
The video, which runs for three minutes, allegedly shows the boy asking Jalen to perform oral sex on him and kiss him.
A chaperone employed by Crown Coaches was supposed to be supervising, however the Aughtersons were the first to bring the incident to the school’s attention when they discovered the video, according to the ABC.
“I can’t come up with a reason why a supervisor could miss this. You would have to be blind,” Ms Aughterson told 7.30.
When Jalen’s parents asked him what happened they said he “dropped his head and said, ‘Nothing happened, I will talk later’.”
Monash Special Developmental School principal, Helen McCoy, contacted police but told 7.30 she had not told the parents of the other child what had happened.
When asked why she had not informed them, she told 7.30: “It is not my place to tell them ... It became a police incident and it was up to the police, nothing to do with this school.”
Victoria Police later sent a statement saying all relevant parties had been informed. Crown Coaches allegedly promised to retrain its staff.
The Aughterson family told 7.30 they had decided to seek legal advice from Shine Lawyers after another student from Jalen’s school was left alone on a Crown bus six months later.
Within an hour of telling the school they were going public with their story, 7.30 reported the Education Department had cancelled Crown’s contract with the school.
“This incident happened in May. Do you have any understanding of why it took our involvement to get the department to cancel the contract?” ABC reporter Louise Milligan asked Ms McCoy.
“No, no understanding at all. No knowledge,” the principal responded.
Ms McCoy said it was “not my place” to have an opinion on the situation.
“It is above me well and truly. I am here for the children,” she told 7.30.
Mr Aughterson told 7.30 he felt the Education Department “just wanted it to go away”.
According to 7.30, Crown Coaches has since been issued with a show cause notice from the Victorian Education Department.
The department would not comment on the timing of the decision to terminate Crown’s Monash contract.
