Girls between the ages of ten and thirteen carrying bulging stomachs are a familiar sight in Calabar, Cross River State capital, and other parts of the state.
The girls often look like a joke or are acting a play in a nursery class but are actually pregnant and a sign of what many believe is a high rate of promiscuity in the state.
The pregnant girls are a common sight in the Calabar South area, which is densely populated.
The high poverty rate, according to analysts, makes parents to encourage their children to look for income to meet family needs.
Such parents send their children to hawk petty items like sachet water, bean cake, groundnut, in the process of which unscrupulous men entice them with gifts, have sex with them and get them pregnant.
Many of the girls operating in the red light area of Calabar, located in Atekong Drive, are from that part of the city and it is common to find primary kids roaming the area at night to hawk their bodies for sex and men, not minding their ages, take them into hotel rooms for a one- night-stand and hand them peanuts.
One of the girls, Esther, 11, carrying a  seven months old pregnancy, told Sunday Vanguard that what forced her into sex before she became pregnant was to source for what the family would eat.
“I am from Uyo in Akwa Ibom State and live with my mother and five other siblings in one room at Akparika Street in Calabar South. I do not go to school because there is no money.  Most times, we do not have food to eat or money to buy water; that is why I go out to meet men to get money and some of them do not like to use condom. That is why I became pregnant”.
The high rate of teenage pregnancy in Cross River has become a source of grave concern to social workers who say it is a time-bomb which may soon create problems in the society that may be hard to contain.
Mr Vincent Ogbor, a social worker in Calabar, said affected parents oftentimes do not reveal the men who put their daughters in the family way for the fear that the men will stop supporting them and so there is nobody to hold and prosecute.
“We have many of these cases both in the villages and in the urban centres across the state and what is driving the scourge is poverty and ignorance. Many people have children they cannot fend for; so they send the girls out to look for what the family will eat or, worse still, they pay no attention when the girl starts bringing little gifts from one ‘uncle’ or the other and, before long, she becomes pregnant”, Ogbor said.
According to him, some of the small girls, when they give birth, abandon the children on the streets or kill them and dump in refuse bins since they lack the resources to cater for them.
“We have reports of these girls, after giving birth, abandoning the children or killing them. If refuse disposal people tell you the number of dead kids they find in refuse bins every week, you will weep. My fear is that these abandoned children may end up becoming armed robbers, kidnappers and militants who make life miserable in the society tomorrow”
The social worker pointed out that government is playing the ostrich by not prosecuting parents who indulge in the act of allowing their children to go out and get pregnant for aiding and abetting, and the men who get the girls pregnant.
“These are girls made to give birth to babies and some of them die in the process because they are too young or contract deadly diseases”, he added.
Mr Oliver Orok, the state Commissioner for Social Welfare, told Sunday Vanguard that there is a law in Cross River which forbids the abuse, defilement or impregnating of underage girls.
“There is a law in the state which specifies years of imprisonment for anyone who abuses, defiles a minor or engages in child labour. We are yet to receive reports on any of such cases and we won’t take kindly to it.”

A pregnant model recently wowed millions after flaunting her physique in a G-string bikini – and divulging her secret booty beauty routine.
A pregnant British model has wowed the internet after sharing a series of snaps of herself in a daring bikini – but it’s her flawless booty that has sent fans wild.
Iskra Lawrence, 29, who’s seven months pregnant, recently took to Instagram to show off her stunning physique in a black two-piece, which included a G-string bottom.
“My lovely lady bumps … in the back and in the front,” she wrote. “Seven months never felt so hot.”
While her 4.5 million followers were clearly delighted by the stunning images, many were also keen on the model divulging the secret behind her cellulite-free skin.
“You look amazing! Please tell me how do you have NO cellulite?! Mine is so bad since my pregnancy,” one commenter asked.
Although Iskra would have been well within her rights to dodge the question, her reply was surprisingly honest.
“The lighting too my love – looks can be deceiving,” she said. “I defo (sic) have some you can see more in diff (sic) lighting. It’s totally natural, my love.”
Further down the thread, the body-positive activist explained she was also a fan of dry brushing and regularly moisturising to ensure her booty looked its best.
“Lighting is deceptive also. I do dry brush and exfoliate and lotion twice a day every day,” Iskra said.
Dry brushing, or body brushing, is where you gently brush skin before showering to promote blood circulation and the elimination of toxins, particularly in cellulite-prone areas.
Commenters were delighted that the model had offered some insight into her beauty routine, with many saying they planned to try the cellulite-beating practice themselves.
“From now on I will make time for dry brush & moisturise,” one person said, adding: “I hope you’re enjoying your pregnancy as much as I did. Becoming a Mum is just the most precious, amazing gift.”
While the lingerie model is loved by millions, she recently faced criticism after announcing her pregnancy online with a sponsored Instagram post.
Iskra, who is expecting her first child with her boyfriend Philip Payne, announced the news with a stunning photo showing herself holding a positive pregnancy test.
“It’s not just the two of us anymore, we’re soon to be a family of 3,” wrote the model.
“When @Philipapayne ran out and got us six boxes of #ad @firstresponsepregnancy Early Result tests, our lives changed forever.”
Although the 29-year-old had been upfront about the post being a paid ad, she raised the ire of some commenters who thought payment for the announcement was in bad taste.
“Your pregnancy announcement is literally an ad bye,” wrote one commenter.
Another added” “You … copped out your pregnancy announcement with an ad placement???”
In a bid to reassure upset fans, Iskra explained the post wasn’t a cash grab, and she planned to help other couples with infertility struggles.
“I’m well aware of the struggles many women face with infertility and how lucky I am,” she wrote.
“That is why I’ll be giving away $10,000 to help and support one of you in your pregnancy journey.”
An inquest into a young mother’s death has raised serious questions about standards at two prestigious Melbourne hospitals.
A young Melbourne dad could be facing more than 260 charges, including two related to an alleged “hoon” gender reveal.
After watching his little brother struggle with an unknown illness for years, this youngster decided it was time to make a move.

Many parents would despair at the thought of their 15-year-old daughter becoming pregnant.
But Soya Keaveney’s mother Janis takes a more positive view.
The unemployed 48-year-old says Soya, whose baby with boyfriend Jake Gray, 17, is due in January, will make a ‘wonderful mother’.
Too much, too young? Seen posing in revealing clothes at just 12, Soya is now 16-weeks pregnant at just 15
Not to mention that the new arrival means the family will be handed a bigger council house.
Mrs Keaveney has already attracted accusations of encouraging the premature sexualisation of her daughter.
Aged just 12, Soya was posing provocatively in a bikini for pictures her mother later posted on the internet in the belief it would launch the youngster’s modelling career.
Model aged 12: Soya in a provocative adult pose
Despite the images bringing a deluge of twisted emails from ‘strange men’, they were not the last.
With her mother’s full approval, the pre-teen Soya donned false nails and a belly button piercing and struck glamour-girl poses for a magazine spread.
In it she said she dieted and worked out daily in an effort to be like her idol, Cheryl Cole.
Last night – with her modelling dreams now on hold – Soya proudly posted a scan of her unborn baby on her Facebook page, writing: ‘Don’t see what the big fuss is. Being pregnant doesn’t mean your (sic) a slut especially to someone who you have been in a long term relationship with!’
Her mother, meanwhile, said: ‘I’m just totally blown away by this. I don’t understand what the big fuss is about.’
She declined to say anything more, directing the Mail to PR adviser Katy Brent and adding that the family would entertain bids for media interviews when Soya returns from a holiday with her boyfriend and his family in the Spanish resort of Majorca.
In an earlier interview, however, she insisted her daughter – who said she was taking the contraceptive pill and had refused to consider an abortion – would teach her unborn child the same discipline she had been shown while growing up.
As a mother, Mrs Keaveney said she had been strict but understanding. Her daughter’s boyfriend was allowed to stay overnight in the family home in Thornaby, Cleveland, but only in separate bedrooms and that is how it would remain until she is 16.
Heavily coated in make up, Soya's mother Janis says she trusts her daughter completely and will be a wonderful mother
‘I know people may think that I’m laying down the law after the horse has bolted,’ she told The Sun. ‘But Soya won’t be sharing a bed with Jake under my roof until she’s turned 16 in January.
‘I’m very strict about that. I know they’re very much in love but the law is the law.’
Proud: Mother Janis Keaveney says she 'doesnt understand what the big fuss is about'
In the meantime the family – which includes Soya’s sisters, 20-year-old Coco and Ritzy, 18, and twin brother Tarot – are preparing to move to a bigger council house.
‘Our three-bedroomed place was already over-crowded with her sisters, her brother Tarot, Jake and one of her sister’s babies,’ Mrs Keaveney said.
‘Once the new baby comes the council will have to find us a place with four or five bedrooms. We’ve already started packing.’
The mother, a former school secretary, caused uproar when she allowed photographs of Soya posing in lacy underwear and a bikini to be published in Closer magazine in 2008 under the headline ‘My girl’s only 12 but she’s already dieting’.
The article revealed that, unlike other children her age, Soya had been going to discos at the age of seven and wearing make-up, mini dresses and revealing tops. By eight she was desperate for fame.
Aged 12, the youngster was exercising every day and never left the house without putting on eyeliner and mascara.
She had also started wearing padded bras, short skirts, cropped tops, high heels and fishnet tights.
There were nights out at under-18 discos and hours spent in front of the mirror getting herself ready in clothes regularly picked out by her mother.
Soya Keaveney's Facebook picture shows the scan of her unborn child. The youngster has attacked critics who have questioned her age
‘Soya is still only a girl and very immature in some ways, but I’ve always 100 per cent trusted her when she goes out with her friends,’ said Mrs Keaveney.
‘When she was 12 or 13 she went with some friends to an under-18 disco and told me about a contest they had to see who could kiss the most boys. I didn’t see any harm in it. After all, it was only kissing.’ The magazine article told how Soya had posed for the provocative pictures – the bikini shot taken while on holiday in Egypt – and her mother had posted them on a website dedicated to her daughter in the hope it would help her modelling career.
