On the morning of August 18, 1993, in Ontario, California, Pam Eldred headed out to drive her two daughters, thirteen-year-old Heather and twelve-year-old Amber, to drill team rehearsal at their school just two blocks away. "Heather wanted to ride in the back of the truck and it was just one of those mornings where a teenager tends to sometimes get away with a lot by getting in your face. I've driven for years and have never been in an accident," she remembers.
Amber rode in the cab, but Pam allowed Heather to ride in the back of her pickup truck just this once. Pam asked Amber to tell her not to sit near the back of the tailgate. "I said not to move so close to the tailgate in case it fell open. My mom told her to move to the middle or the side," said Amber. Pam stopped the truck, got out, told Heather to move forward which she did, and they continued on their way.
All of a sudden, Amber saw a car about to hit them and warned Pam. She slammed on the brakes and the truck spun around. Heather flew out of the back and landed on the street. "I looked in the rearview mirror and Heather wasn't there," said Pam. She found her lying on the street unconscious and screamed for help. "She appeared normal, but unconscious. There was blood coming out of her nose," she said. She held Amber knowing that she was okay. "She would tell me that it was all my fault, I shouldn't have done this, and I didn't want to hear my mom say that because I was afraid she would go insane," said Amber.
Pam's close friend, Tammy Marion, drove by the accident. "Pam screamed to me, 'That's Heather! It's Heather in the street!' and she was crying and sobbing. When I ran up I said, 'Give them some room,' so she could calm down and let them work with Heather and not scare her," she said. "I lost it. To see your child so helpless and to know also that your stupid mistake did this," said Pam.
Mike Currents from the Ontario Fire Department was the first paramedic to arrive on the scene. "She had a large bump on her forehead and that was the only injury they found. My biggest concern was that she had a brain injury," he said. Her breathing pattern became irregular and her jaw was clenched. Soon after, Mercy care line paramedic Greg Ward arrived on the scene. "What happens with a head injury is that the brain swells inside the skull basically and all vital functions stop. We were unable to innovate this girl and get oxygen to her brain," he said. So they loaded her into the ambulance to get her to the hospital as soon as possible.
In the back of the ambulance, Mike spoke to the hospital on the radio and tried to talk them into letting him do a nasal intubation to help Heather breathe. "That can be very dangerous with a head injury because if you've got a skull fracture you can go right into the brain," he said. Heather started to posture and vomit.
Heather was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center and put under the care of neurosurgeon Dr. David Neuroma. "I felt that the odds were hundred to one against her. She had a massive hemorrhage. Her airway was protected but they had no cranial nerve signs of any activity," he said. Her father, Richard, had followed the ambulance to the hospital. "They told us that they didn't think that Heather would make it. She was in very critical condition," he said. The nurse told her family that her brain was bleeding, there was a lot of swelling, and that there were a couple of options they could go in and do surgery. Dr. Neuroma came out and just basically told them that he could do an operation or just wait. "I realized now the reason why he said that was he was so convinced that he was gonna probably lose her in surgery and that it was almost like not worth doing," said Pam. "The only thing I knew how to do this moment was to pray," said Richard. The doctors told Pam that Heather was in a deep coma, but as soon as she told her that she loved her, her arm flinched and she was taken into the operating room.
"When the doctor came in after the surgery, he just looked different. He said, 'We got in there and I found the bleeder right away,' and he was able to get it under control," said Pam. Heather was still in a deep coma, but was visited by her family and friends everyday. "It was a immense feeling of goodwill. I felt coming from other people," said Richard. On Day 12, she opened her eyes and said, "I love you." "The best gift you could get in the whole world was to see her open her eyes and look right at you," said Pam.
Heather spent months of occupational, physical, and speech therapy to relearn everything. "I got her a wheelchair to get around and she refused it. Th next day, she was pushing it and I was so proud of her. It was like watching her walking and spelling her name for the first time," said Pam.
Four months have passed since the accident. "I just want to be the same. How I used to be. I'm doing really good in school except for Home Economics. I wanted to be a marine biologist, but now I want to be a nurse," said Heather. She is now back on drill team but can't do a split or move her head. "I think the paramedic that insisted on innovating her is the hero because how many of them get thanked," said Pam.
