LOS ANGELES (AP) — The case involving Roman Polanski, who fled the United States after he forced himself on a 13-year-old girl during a photo shoot, has spanned 45 years, sparking court battles on both sides of the Atlantic. On Sunday, The Associated Press obtained an unsealed court transcript of the former prosecutor in the case testifying that the judge privately told lawyers he would renege on a promise and imprison the renowned director.
Here are some key dates in the long-running case, which has kept Polanski living in exile in Europe:
March 10, 1977 — Roman Polanski conducts a photo shoot with a 13-year-old girl at Jack Nicholson’s house. As she later testifies, Polanski gives the girl champagne and part of a sedative during the shoot, then forced her to have sex. She says she repeatedly told Polanski no during intercourse, but says she did not fight him because she was afraid of him. The girl’s mother calls police after finding out what happened.
March 24, 1977 — A grand jury indicts Polanski on six felony charges, including rape, furnishing a controlled substance to a minor and sodomy. He later pleads not guilty at arraignment.
August 1977 — Polanski pleads guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and a judge orders the director to undergo further proceedings.
September 1977 — A judge orders the director to undergo a 90-day diagnostic screening at a California state prison to help determine sentencing.
January 1978 — The diagnostic screening — completed after 42 days — recommends Polanski be placed on probation.
Feb. 1, 1978 — Polanski flees the United States on eve of sentencing after learning that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Laurence Rittenband intended to send Polanski back to prison. An arrest warrant is issued, confining Polanski’s movements to France, Poland and Switzerland. Polanski alleges Rittenband met with a prosecutor who was not assigned to the case — without Polanski’s lawyer present — to discuss sentencing.
September 1997 — A new judge meets with prosecutors and Polanski’s attorney to discuss the case in chambers. The meeting is not reported, and elements of the discussion remain in dispute. Polanski’s attorney contends the judge wanted Polanski’s sentencing hearing televised, which the judge denies. Prosecutors contend Polanski sought to be sentenced without reporters present, which the director denies.
November 2002 — Lawyers for Conde Nast Publications successfully unseal grand jury testimony presented in Polanski’s case.
March 2003 — Polanski wins the best director Academy Award for “The Pianist,” but is unable to collect his Oscar in person due to an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
December 2008 — Polanski’s lawyers seek a dismissal of the charges against him. His motion is supported by his victim.
February 2009 — A Los Angeles Superior Court judge rejects Polanski’s dismissal motion, stating that Polanski must appear in court to resolve his case. The order goes into effect in May 2009.
July 2009 — Polanski appeals the February ruling in his case.
September 2009 — Polanski is arrested in Switzerland pursuant to a warrant. Extradition proceedings begin.
December 2009 — A California court panel rejects Polanski’s appeal, ruling that the director must appear in court to resolve his case.
January 2010 — Polanski’s lawyers request the director be sentenced without being present in Los Angeles.
February and March 2010 — A Los Angeles court takes sealed testimony from Roger Gunson, the original prosecutor who handled Polanski’s case, about his recollections of the judge’s 1977 promises to the director.
May 2010 — A judge rejects a motion by Polanski’s lawyers to unseal Gunson’s testimony.
July 2010 — Switzerland rejects U.S. request to extradite Polanski, citing its inability to obtain the Gunson testimony.
December 2014 — Polanski’s lawyers seek an evidentiary hearing to explore the director’s allegations of judicial misconduct in Los Angeles. A judge rejects the motion without conducting a hearing.
February 2015 — Polanski appears in a Polish court for hours of questioning on whether a U.S. request to extradite the director is valid.
October 2015 — A Polish court rejects an effort to extradite Polanski.
May 2016 — Poland’s new justice minister revives extradition proceedings against Polanski.
December 2016 — The Polish Supreme Court rules Polanski will not be extradited to the United States.
February 2017 — Polanski’s attorney seeks an order in Los Angeles to unseal Gunson’s testimony. Later motions by Polanski seek an order confirming the director should not serve any additional time behind bars if he returns to Los Angeles. Polanski’s lawyer relies on information included in a lengthy Polish court decision.
April 2017 — A Los Angeles judge rejects Polanski’s requests to be sentenced without returning to court or for a determination he has served his sentence.
June 2017 — Polanski’s victim, Samantha Geimer, appears in a Los Angeles court to ask a judge to end the case, calling it a “40-year-sentence” imposed on both her and the director.
August 2017 — A Los Angeles judge rejects Geimer’s request to end Polanski’s case.
May 3, 2018 — The film academy announces it has expelled Polanski and Bill Cosby, who was convicted of a sex offense a week earlier, from its membership.
July 13, 2022 — A California appeals court orders the unsealing of Gunson's testimony after Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón dropped longstanding objections his predecessors made to its release.
July 17, 2022 — The transcript is provided to The Associated Press showing that the prosecutor believed the judge had broken his promises to Polanski.

A sixth-grade teacher in Arizona accused of having sex with a 13-year-old student performed oral sex on him in a classroom — and told the teen she wanted him “every day with no time limit,” according to court records.
Brittany Zamora, a 27-year-old teacher at Las Brisas Academy Elementary School in Goodyear, allegedly had sex with the 13-year-old student three times and also performed oral sex on him in her car during encounters from Feb. 1 through March 8, according to court records obtained by the Arizona Republic .
Zamora and the teen also traded naked photos, he told police, saying their relationship started when the married teacher began “flirting” with him in a classroom chat group. She then sent the teen a nude picture of herself and another clad in lingerie.
During one exchange, the teen told Zamora he wanted to have sex with her again, court records show.
“I know baby!” Zamora responded. “I want you every day with no time limit.”
In another message, according to court records, Zamora said: “If I could quit my job and (have sex with) you all day long, I would.”
Zamora was arrested last week after the teen’s parents found text messages indicating a sexual relationship between the pair. The texts were discovered because the boy’s parents had installed an app to monitor his phone, police said.
Zamora was taken into custody Thursday on one count of obscene material transmission to a minor, according to the Arizona Republic. A court commissioner then found probable cause to hold her on suspicion of eight counts of sexual conduct with a minor, two counts of child molestation and one count of transmitting obscene material, according to the newspaper.
Zamora told a court commissioner that she would “love to go home, to be released” during her initial appearance in court on Friday.
“I’d love to go home to my husband,” Zamora told Commissioner Melissa Zabor, who set her bond at $250,000.
A second student has also told police he saw Zamora and the 13-year-old student having sex. Zamora also sent a second student naked photos of herself, he told police.
The alleged sexual relationship was reported to police late Wednesday by the school’s principal after the teen’s parents found the concerning text messages. Screenshots of the incriminating texts were relayed to police, according to Liberty School District interim superintendent Richard Rundhaug.
“The safety of our students is our #1 priority,” Rundhaug said in a statement posted on the school’s website . “Transparency is equally important. We are fully cooperating with the Goodyear Police Department and will comment further at the appropriate time.”
Rundhaug said in a statement a day later that the arrested staff member would not return to the school.
“This incident has been reported to the Arizona State Board of Education so they can make a determination regarding the teacher’s certification,” Rundhaug said. “Additionally, we have school counselors and school psychologists at Las Brisas Academy today to help students and staff members cope with this incident. The school psychologists and school counselors will also be available for the foreseeable future to continue to attend to our students’ and staff members’ needs.”
The teen’s parents also told police that Zamora’s husband “harassed” the teen’s father on the phone, begging for him not to contact authorities about the allegations.
Zamora’s husband told the teen’s father that his wife had “made a big mistake, but that she loved the kids,” according to court records obtained by the newspaper.
Zamora’s husband also seemingly suggested that he and the teen’s father fight each other to settle the bizarre love triangle, suggesting that they “meet up” to “settle this.” The teen’s father ignored the invitation and hung up, court records show.
Zamora, who started working at the school less than a year ago, is due to appear in court Thursday, according to the Arizona Republic. It was unclear if she had hired an attorney.

AMES, Iowa -- As a new mother herself, Brenda Lohman admits to
being shocked by the results of a new study she co-authored. It
found that among nearly 1,000 low-income families in three
major cities, one in four children between the ages of 11 and
16 reported having sex, with their first sexual intercourse
experience occurring at the average age of 12.77.

"So if 12 years was the average age here, that meant that
some kids were starting at 10 or younger," said Lohman, an
Iowa State University associate professor of human development
and family studies (HDFS). "A handful of kids reported
having sex as early as 8 or 9. We know from our follow-up
interviews that one boy who reported having sexual intercourse
for the first time at age nine had fathered four children by
the time he was 18."

"Those people who say that kids don't have sex at that
young of age should think again," she said.
"Definitely the age is the most shocking thing about this
study."

Tina Jordahl, a former Iowa State HDFS and public policy
graduate student who is now a market research specialist with
Hospice of Central Iowa, collaborated with Lohman on the study.
It analyzes data from the "Welfare, Children and Families:
A Three-City Study" -- a six-year longitudinal
investigation of low-income families living in Boston, Chicago
and San Antonio. Their paper, titled "A biological
analysis of risk and protective factors associated with early
sexual intercourse of young adolescents," was posted
online in the Children and Youth Services Review and will be
published in an upcoming issue of the journal.

Interview data for the study was first collected in 1999 on
youth between the ages of 10 and 14, and again in 2001. Lohman
says she also has data collected in 2006 from the same
subjects, who were between 16 and 20 by that time.

In the study, boys reported their first sexual intercourse at
younger ages (averaging 12.48) than girls (13.16). Boys also
had nearly 10 percent higher frequency of intercourse than
girls and were also more likely to experience sexual debut (20
percent to 14 percent) between the two years when the first two
waves of data were collected.

Recent national research has found that 13 percent of girls and
15 percent of boys have had sex by the time they're 16.
Lohman says that means the rate of sex among her low-income
sample is only slightly higher among the girls, but almost
double among the boys

"The ages [of sexual debut] are a bit younger than the
national samples, bu
