Growing numbers of youngsters are swapping naked selfies, leading to a rising tide of online child abuse images, campaigners warned yesterday.
The number of sickening pictures removed by the Internet Watch Foundation has doubled from around 31,000 in 2014 to more than 60,000 this year. In 2013 there were 13,000.
The IWF, which patrols the internet in cooperation with the police, said more young children were uploading nude photographs of themselves.
Some are egged on by their peers, while others are groomed online by paedophiles, with the resulting pictures often going viral and ending up on child exploitation websites.
Charity chief executive Susie Hargreaves said: 'What we are worried about is that there are a considerable number of children on webcams.
'What we're seeing is more and more content over different countries and changing patterns and the issue about the self-generated user-produced content is that we're seeing more of that. Worryingly, it's getting younger.'
The IWF conducted a study earlier this year looking at explicit pictures created by a child with no adult visible in the image. Some 17.5 per cent of the images examined featured children aged 15 and younger, more than four-fifths of whom had used a webcam.
All the images of those aged 15 and younger were lifted from their original location online and posted somewhere else.
Miss Hargreaves said: 'Nobody knows how many images or videos are in circulation, but we know that once these images are out there, they will be shared among hundreds of thousands of people.Β
'We have seen an increase in what we call youth-produced content. It's new images or videos produced by a young person of themselves engaged in an erotic or sexual activity, intentionally shared by electronic means.Β
'This definition covers a really wide range of content. [From] the selfie taken on the phone by a 16-year-old that then they share with their mates, to a very young child with a webcam in their bedroom experiencing a level of coercion at the other end.'
Four-fifths of the images taken down by the IWF last year were of children aged ten or under, and 4 per cent appear to be two or under.
The IWF charity said part of the reason for the rise in removals was that staff have been more proactive rather than simply acting on reports from the public.
However, it may also be the result of more people in less developed countries obtaining access to the internet. The organisation works on a voluntary basis with major web hosts, requesting content to be taken down if it contains child abuse images. In the months up to July this year, it successfully removed 31,000 β indicating the figure could double by the end of the year.
It has had to deal with brands including BT, Sky and Facebook, which have been unwittingly used to host child abuse images. The firms cooperate when asked to remove content, the IWF said.
However, only 0.3 per cent of the images are hosted in the UK, with more than half in North America and the rest in other countries.
Children from middle-class backgrounds are more likely to drink than those from poorer families, a survey shows.
Some 70 per cent said they had tried alcohol at least once, compared to 50 per cent of those from poorer households. Experts said middle-class parents tended to let teenagers have wine at home on the assumption it was βsafeβ and the βright thing to doβ.
The survey found that teenagers living in more affluent towns were ten times more likely to get drunk than those in poorer areas. A total of 27 per cent of those in Brighton and Hove who had ever tried alcohol had been drunk in the last month compared to 2.6 per cent in Newham, East London.
The Health and Social Care Information Centre surveyed teenage girls and boys from a cross-section of backgrounds. The poll of 120,000 girls and boys aged 15 also also shows nearly two-thirds of teenage girls are suffering bullying.
A total of 63 per cent have been victimised online, by text or to their face, compared to 48 per cent of boys.
Worryingly, nearly half of girls β 46 per cent β think they are too fat, twice as many as boys. The findings will add to concerns that girls are becoming increasingly obsessed about their body image at a very young age.
The HSCIC study found that 19 per cent of girls were not satisfied with their lives compared to 9 per cent of boys.
Tom Smith, of Alcohol Concern, said: βMany parents mistakenly believe that introducing children to alcohol early, in a safe and controlled environment at home is the right thing to do, but all the research indicates that the younger someone starts drinking, the more likely they are to have problems with alcohol in later life.β
